$11.94 It's no secret that Sting is a serious man, so it's only logical that his holiday album -- his first new music since the Police reunion, not that it really matters -- is a serious endeavor, thank you. No niceties for him, no comforts of carols; he favors formal over familiar, writing madrigals, not ditties. It is music made by someone who lives in a castle, which isn't necessarily such a bad thing: the austerity is genuine, not affected, and the cerebral nature of the album is fascinating, albeit mildly so, as this is as sleepy as it is thoughtful. And it's that thoughtfulness that does distinguish IF ON A WINTER NIGHT...; no other Christmas album exists in the head like this. It's a holiday album for people who have never wanted to hear a holiday album, let alone ...

Easy Money
$7.59 Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
September 18, 1983 is a day that will go down in Kisstory. It was then that Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, and replacement members Vinnie Vincent and Eric Carr took off their signature makeup and revealed themselves on MTV. LICK IT UP was released, and a new chapter unfolded.
Using the same production team as CREATURES OF THE NIGHT, Michael James Jackson, Simmons and Stanley came up with the same bone crunching sound as CREATURES, but with a slightly more polished feel. "Exciter" kicks off the album with a machine gun riff, which leads into Gene Simmons proclaiming he's "Not For The Innocent". The title track was a modest hit in the U.S., faired better in the U.K. and made for quite an entertaining video. "All Hell's Breakin' Loose" is a gritty streetwise track where Paul Stanley actually raps! "And On The 8th Day" is a powerful anthem that closes an exciting album.
With Vinnie Vincent's expert guitar playing and songwriting abilities (he co-wrote 8 out of the 10 tracks) and ...

Jazz Workshop Records do not apologize for the low fidelity recording here; we are happy that one of [Parker's] blowing nights remains for musical posterity." So say the original liner notes by trombonist Jimmy Knepper, a contemporary of Parker's when this quintet was recorded playing a dance at the St. Nicholas Arena in New York City in 1950. Indeed, hearing the incendiary altoist stretching out in front of a live audience under casual circumstances is worth putting up with the accompanying hiss, background chatter and the occasional "yeah!" that comes through.
Parker blows through many of the staples of his repertoire, both standards he came to possess, like "Out of Nowhere" and "Embraceable You" and his own compositions (often built off the chord progressions to standards) such as "Ornithology," "Scrapple From The Apple" and "Hot House." There are no solo spots by the other musicians. The original tapes only included the moments when Parker was playing, and these fragments have been meticulously spliced together to create the generally successful illusion of whole tunes--though ...
| | Murder City Devils Thelema CD (2001) Extended Play
Easy Money
$8.19 By the time of 2001's THELEMA, the haunting organs on the periphery of the Murder City Devils' sound had become a central feature of their raucous garage punk. Singer Spencer Moody's bellicose yell remains an acquired taste, but the music is more varied than ever. "Bear Away" is more percolating post-punk than classic garage rock, and the moody "Bride of the Elephant Man" thrives on stabbing guitars and drums that attack from several angles through the keyboard haze. "364 Days" is a fitting final track, as Moody drops the yell for clean singing and the band plays a shaky barroom ballad.
