And what an ensemble it is; no less than Joe Farrell (reeds, flute), Eddie Gomez (bass) and Steve Gadd (drums) are on hand to masterfully interpret Corea's dynamic compositions. The results are nothing less than magnificent.
It takes little time to hear why these four virtuosos were the most in-demand musicians of their era. The opening "The One Step" offers a caressing melody by Corea on the Fender Rhodes piano, opening up into a tight, swinging solo section driven by the inimitable Gadd. The flowing "Waltz for Dave," a tribute to Dave Brubeck, swings lightly as Farrell turns in a spectacular flute performance. Things really start to burn on "Samba Song," a muscular Latin piece that each member executes impressively. Likewise, the fast-paced "Sicily" is a fiery samba that displays Corea's knack for the genre. The session closes with the stunning "Cappucino," a modern bebop tune that could only have been performed by this sensational group of FRIENDS.

Between 1970 and 1972, Stephen Stills was busy playing with Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, and working on a series of solo albums. In addition to all this activity he led the supergroup that appears on this stunning release. Originally a double album of four distinct sides, MANASSAS finds Stills and company (which includes friends and session musicians Chris Hillman, Dallas Taylor, and Al Perkins, among others) at the intersection of rock, folk, country, blues, and Latin flavors. Distinctive styles are noticeable song by song, yet the whole is a hodge-podge, and it is the strength and credibility of the mixture that makes MANASSAS such a great experience.
The first fourth of the album focuses on '60s rock with Afro-Cuban overtones (imagine Buffalo Springfield sitting in with Santana), followed by a batch of country and bluegrass-oriented material (with Chris Hillman's influence more strongly felt). The dreamy, swaying "It Doesn't Matter" kicks off the third section, which has a folk-rock feel, replete with multi-part harmonies and chiming guitars. The final section brings things back to amped-up rock, wrapping up the set with the rootsy groove of "Blues Man," a tribute to Jimi Hendrix. This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production ...

Bobhowla, is essentially 27yr old ‘Sandgrounder’ and troubadour Howard Doupe. Southport born Doupe’s debut has been 5 years in the making. He has enjoyed successful collaborations with a number of musicians (several contributions appear here), yet the album’s genesis, foundation and raison d’etre are moulded and influenced by Doupe’s heartfelt determination to embrace the ‘honourable’ and ‘admirable’ art of songwriting.Doupe freely admits to sharing, with many others, the ubiquitous inspiration following his early experiences of both Nirvana and Oasis. Where he positively differs is in eschewing the overplayed anthem and bombast and relying on his inherent ability to convey his feelings via a collection of songs which have been allowed to simply ‘express themselves’.
