After his days as the leader of the highly successful fusion group Return To Forever, Chick Corea turned to a more traditional style in his solo career. FRIENDS from 1978 features elements of swing, Latin music and the sensitive intimacy inherent ... Full Descriptionin a small acoustic ensemble. And what an ensemble it is; no less than Joe Farrell (reeds, flute), Eddie Gomez (bass) and Steve Gadd (drums) are on hand to masterfully interpret Corea's dynamic compositions. The results are nothing less than magnificent.
It takes little time to hear why these four virtuosos were the most in-demand musicians of their era. The opening "The One Step" offers a caressing melody by Corea on the Fender Rhodes piano, opening up into a tight, swinging solo section driven by the inimitable Gadd. The flowing "Waltz for Dave," a tribute to Dave Brubeck, swings lightly as Farrell turns in a spectacular flute performance. Things really start to burn on "Samba Song," a muscular Latin piece that each member executes impressively. Likewise, the fast-paced "Sicily" is a fiery samba that displays Corea's knack for the genre. The session closes with the stunning "Cappucino," a modern bebop tune that could only have been performed by this sensational group of FRIENDS.
Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio.
Recorded at Kendun Recorders Inc, Burbank, California. Includes liner notes by Chick Corea.
Personnel: Chick Corea (piano, Fender Rhodes); Joe Farrell (reeds, flute); Eddie Gomez (bass); Steve Gadd (percussion).

Friends album
$9.59 The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, it was impossible to walk down the hall of any college dorm in America without hearing one of the songs here echoing from somebody's room.
Heard today, the thing still packs a wallop. Butterfield's harmonica and vocals are utterly idiomatic, without a hint of minstrelsy. Michael Bloomfield's lead guitar is stinging and eloquent, and the rhythm section, on loan from Howling Wolf, ...
| | Chick Corea Three Quartets CD (1981)
Friends CD music
$9.59 Between the tides of Return To Forever and The Elektric Band, Chick Corea's recording projects focused on more intimate acoustic ensembles. Of these, the superb THREE QUARTETS is the best of the bunch. Recorded in 1981 at Corea's own Mad Hatter studio, it features the pianist at his creative best as well as his favorite partners Michael Brecker, Eddie Gomez and the inimitable Steve Gadd. Few other records of this period contain the powerful musical energy that was created when these four virtuosos came together.
The performances captured on this album are stunning. The complex "Quartet No. 1" offers a punchy melody that explodes into a furious solo by Brecker. The softer "Quartet No. 3" follows with dramatic chordal work by Corea and expressive solos by Brecker and Gomez. The epic "Quartet No. 2" is one of Corea's most dynamic works. The first ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Friends music CDs
$11.59 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also a lovely rendition of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break ...

$11.89 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and "Act II" will latch onto SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA with the same passion with which they embraced THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY. And most importantly, unreconstructed Southern rockers of the boogie-and-beer variety will appreciate the fact that this is an unapologetic, ...
| | Dredg Catch Without Arms CD (2005)
Friends album
$7.69 Early on, critics often described Dredg as a metal group. However, the quartet has since matured into a hard-edged indie-rock ensemble that seeks diversity and refinement in its music. On CATCH WITHOUT ARMS, the band favors highly orchestrated parts, dense guitar riffs, and powerful drumming. Each song is based around memorable vocal hooks and sensitive lyrical content.
Many tracks on CATCH WITHOUT ARMS have a searching quality to them. Despite the sheer force of the music, this release is ultimately marked by well constructed melodies and intriguing harmonic underpinnings. This ...
| | Stan Getz Getz/Gilberto CD (1963)
Friends CD music
$10.59 Opening track "The Girl From Ipanema," a breezy, infectious Jobim composition with vocals by both Joao and Astrud, became one of the biggest (and most recognizable) hits of the era, and the single most popular Brazilian tune in America. The exquisite shuffle "Desafinado," the Joao-Astrud duet "Corcovado," and the eminently grooving "So Danco Samba" have gone on to become standards of both bossa nova and jazz, and the versions here are definitive. Getz's sensitive playing blends seamlessly with the deceptively casual rhythmic sophistication of Jobim, Gilberto, and percussionist Milton Banana. The material, the musicianship, and the gentle, ...

The title of this 1959 album nicely mirrors some of what makes Thelonious Monk so magical. He took common, simple elements and made them resonate with his personality. (Note: the original five pieces have been expanded to seven with the inclusion of two alternate takes.) Monk brought Thad Jones on board for an extra harmonic line in the compositions, as well as his spirited soloing. "Jackie-ing," named for his niece, opens the album like a national ...
