| | Miles Davis Live Evil Super-Audio CD Miles Davis Discography of CDs
Digitally remastered by Tom Ruff (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. Broken into a group of short studio pieces and four extended live jams, LIVE EVIL finds ... Full DescriptionMiles Davis going further up the river, into the heart of uncharted musical darkness. In the studio, Miles took simple tone ballads and immersed them in the electrified air that he'd been breathing since IN A SILENT WAY. "Nem Um Talvez" and "Selim" are sister pieces; with Miles' trumpet bathed in Hermeto Pascoal's keyboards and vocal moans, sprinkled with proto-dub percussion effects.
The live pieces are another animal altogether. Augmented by John McLaughlin's Hendrixian guitar runs and bolstered by Michael Henderson's funky bass pops, these are blues-tinged tickets to an electric, improvisational nirvana. With room to stretch out in any direction, each soloist develops fluidly within the ensemble, then thrusts powerfully forward. Jack DeJohnette and Airto Moreira hold down the backbeat, shifting it into a multitude of forms; Keith Jarrett fills the down-tempo breaks admirably. But it's Miles and McLaughlin who incite this music to the frenzied riot that is it's true calling. When the time comes and the massive, dark groove descends, it comes with a ritualistic, heretofore-unheard fervor.
Recorded at Columbia Studio B, New York, New York between February 6 and June 4, 1970, and live at the Cellar Door, Washington, D.C. on December 19, 1970. Includes liner notes by Gary Bartz.
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Hermeto Pascoal (vocals, whistling, electric piano, drums); Conrad Roberts (spoken vocals); Gary Bartz (soprano & alto saxophones); Steve Grossman, Wayne Shorter (soprano saxophone); Keith Jarrett (electric piano, organ); Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea (electric piano); John McLaughlin (guitar); Khalil Balakrishna (electric sitar); Dave Holland (acoustic & electric basses); Ron Carter (acoustic bass); Michael Henderson (electric bass); Jack DeJohnette, Billy Cobham (drums); Airto Moreia (percussion).

Rolling Stone (1/20/72, pp.51-52) - "...Everybody is just playing away, and there aren't any weak links....Miles reacts to this happy situation by playing his ass off....this sounds like what Miles had in mind when he first got into electric music and freer structures and rock rhythms..." Spin (8/97, p.117) - "...splices together live chunks and cool studio vignettes, and features the Hindu heavy-metal fretwork of John McLaughlin..." Entertainment Weekly (8/01/97, p.75) - "...With his inimitable trumpeting--by turns melancholy, pungent, and lyrical--at the music's center, his electrified cohorts stretch the limits of jazz, rock, and funk..." - Rating: A- Down Beat (7/97, p.65) - 4 1/2 stars (out of 5) - "Initially recorded in '69 and '70, when the band was in flux, this palindrome-titled monster was later assembled out of live and studio tapes by Davis and producer Teo Macero.... this isn't pyrotechnic techno-dweeb fusion, but an outstandingly creative electric collage..." JazzTimes (10/97, p.87) - "...Miles' true electric rite of passage..." Musician (8/97, p.87) - "...The ears-open interactivity of Davis' ensembles--that ability to engage in serious musical conversation while flying in the upper atmosphere--is enough to shame any current bebop-babbling jazz automaton..." Purchase Live Evil CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Rippingtons Modern Art CD (2009)
Live Evil album
$15.65 The Rippingtons have been one of the most durable and fertile bands (ex-members include Dave Koz and David Benoit) on the contemporary jazz scene--MODERN ART is album number 18 for guitarist Russ Freeman and company. For the group's fans, their smooth, genial sound is alive and well here, but ART ups the ante somewhat. The instrumentalists get to stretch out a bit more than usual, and there is also more variety in the moods they strive for. For example, "One Step Closer" features some fine R&B-flavored sax while "Paris Groove" imparts some City of Light flavor.
Audio Mixer: Steve Sykes.
Arranger: Russ Freeman .
| | Freddie Hubbard High Energy CD (1974)
Live Evil CD music
$10.49 One of Freddie Hubbard's few decent efforts during his very commercial period with Columbia, this 1974 LP found his quintet (with tenor-saxophonist Junior Cook and keyboardist George Cables) joined by a small orchestra and a string section. Fortunately these six performances (particularly "Crisis," "Ebony Moonbeams" and Stevie Wonder's "Too High") are given fairly creative treatment. The leader/trumpeter is in good form and there is solo space given to Ernie Watts (on bass flute, soprano and flute) and tenorman Pete Christlieb in addition to the quintet members.
Personnel: Freddie Hubbard (trumpet, flugelhorn); Dean Parks (guitar); Jules Chaikin (strings); Ernie Watts (flute, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Junior Cook (flute, tenor saxophone); Pete Christleib (bass clarinet, tenor saxophone); Dick Hyde, George Bohanon (trombone); George Cables (electric piano); Joe Sample (Clavinet, organ); Ian Underwood (ARP synthesizer); Kent Brinkley (bass instrument); Harvey Mason, Ralph Penland (drums); King Errisson (congas); Carmelo Garcia (timbales); Victor Feldman (percussion).

| | Count Basie Basie Land CD (1964) Remastered; Digipak
Live Evil album
$9.59 Billy Byers was given the task of writing ten numbers for the Count Basie Orchestra to interpret, and he proved very much up to the job. None of these originals became standards, but with the tenors of Frank Foster and Eric Dixon plus trumpeter Al Aarons taking solo honors, and the classic Basie rhythm section swinging lightly with passion, this album succeeds easily.
| | Juanita Bynum Pour My Love On You CDs (2008)
Live Evil CD music
$12.79 For her ninth release, gospel powerhouse Juanita Bynum delivers a sweeping two-disc window into a year and a half of performances from across the country. Nobody spreads the good word like Bynum, whose intensely personal style, unflinching honesty, and glorious pipes make the power of her personal revelations neckhair-raising for listeners. Myron Williams produces this effort which mixes modern gospel and Bynum's impassioned singing ministering, with a roof-raising old-time religion fervor. The highlights are many but include the title track and a peppery take on the standard "Jesus on the Mainline."
Audio Mixer: Myron Williams.

This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
A truly inventive Aerosmith album, still suffused with a gloriously raspy sense of the blues, but quietly evocative in its timbre and approach. It showed Tyler working out lyrics that were so much more than simple cars and girls fodder, 'Adam's Apple' theorizing that creation could quite possibly have occurred with an alien mothership landing on earth and setting the wheels of the human race in motion. 'Sweet Emotion' throbbed slowly into life, 'Big Ten Inch Record', a salty R&B work-out, while 'You See Me Crying' was heightened and given body by a warm orchestration. A clear steeple of great work amid a skyline of repeating successes.
Recorded at the Record Plant, New York, New York.
Aerosmith: Steven Tyler (vocals, harmonica, keyboards, percussion); Joe Perry (acoustic guitar, slide guitar, percussion, background vocals); Tom Hamilton (guitar, bass); Brad Whitford (guitar); Joey Kramer (drums, percussion).
Additional personnel: Scott Cushnie (piano); Jay Messina (bass marimba).
