Doug Raney was 21 when he recorded this set, his first date as a leader. Heavily influenced by his father Jimmy Raney, with whom he had recently played duets during a tour of Europe, young Doug sounds surprisingly mature on this quartet set with pianist Duke Jordan, bassist Hugo Rasmussen and drummer Billy Hart. He performs eight jazz standards (including "Mr. P.C.," "The End of a Love Affair," "Unit 7" and a lengthy rendition of Tadd Dameron's "Casbah") with a swinging style and light tone just slightly heavier than that of his father. An impressive debut. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel: Doug Raney (guitar); Duke Jordan (piano); Hugo Rasmussen (bass); Billy Hart (drums).

Introducing Doug Raney album
$15.15 Recorded between 1957 and 1990. Includes liner notes by Jim Ferguson.
Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1998, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Kenny Burrell's discography for the Fantasy label encompasses the middle period of his career, and though well played, it leaves one wanting. His Blue Note material from his earlier days is better, and his interpretations of Duke Ellington's music from that era are definitive. There are only two Ellington numbers here, so this collection only scratches the surface. It's a credible compilation, good but not essential, even for starters. ~ Michael G. Nastos

Introducing Doug Raney songs
$8.85 Johnny Smith's best-known album, 1952's MOONLIGHT IN VERMONT (also the title of his signature song), assured the guitarist a place in jazz history. While saxophone legend Stan Getz is a prominent guest on the record, and certainly threatens to steal the show on numerous occasions, the spotlight never strays too far from Smith, who easily entrances with his supremely laid-back style. Consisting almost entirely of standards, MOONLIGHT is ideal for lulling listeners to sleep (in the most pleasing sense), as Smith's spare, chiming six-string lines gently mesh with the subtle rhythmic backing and Getz's ...

| | Impulse! Unmixed CD (2005)
Introducing Doug Raney music CDs
$6.65 The remix phenomenon continues apace with this fine set of Impulse classics reworked by some of the more respectable electronica artists of the 2000s. With a collection of source material that includes George Russell, Charles Mingus, Pharoah Sanders, and John Coltrane, among others, the set is already moving in the right direction, but the inventive, sometimes radical reworkings by the likes of Prefuse 73, the RZA, Kid Koala, and Sa Ra put this a cut above your average pedestrian, lounge-vibed, electronica/jazz outing.
