Doug Raney was 21 when he recorded this set, his first date as a leader. Heavily influenced by his father Jimmy Raney, with whom he had recently played duets during a tour of Europe, young Doug sounds surprisingly mature on this quartet set with pianist Duke Jordan, bassist Hugo Rasmussen and drummer Billy Hart. He performs eight jazz standards (including "Mr. P.C.," "The End of a Love Affair," "Unit 7" and a lengthy rendition of Tadd Dameron's "Casbah") with a swinging style and light tone just slightly heavier than that of his father. An impressive debut. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel: Doug Raney (guitar); Duke Jordan (piano); Hugo Rasmussen (bass); Billy Hart (drums).

Introducing Doug Raney album
$14.09 The title might seem arrogant, but Eric Alexander doesn't presume to be anything more than he is--a very talented tenor player at the top of his game. The saxophonist here expertly demonstrates his abilities, along with those of his former boss, organist Charles Earland, and his longtime associates Jim Rotondi, Joe Farnsworth, and Peter Bernstein. Alexander continues to prove both muscular and agile, sporting a robust, tastefully lyrical tone, while also occasionally summoning passages of ...

| | Johnny Smith Moonlight In Vermont CD (1956) Remastered
Introducing Doug Raney music CDs
$8.85 Johnny Smith's best-known album, 1952's MOONLIGHT IN VERMONT (also the title of his signature song), assured the guitarist a place in jazz history. While saxophone legend Stan Getz is a prominent guest on the record, and certainly threatens to steal the show on numerous occasions, the spotlight never strays too far from Smith, who easily entrances with his supremely laid-back style. Consisting almost entirely of standards, MOONLIGHT is ideal for lulling listeners to sleep (in the most pleasing sense), as Smith's spare, chiming six-string lines gently mesh with the subtle rhythmic backing and Getz's resonant sax playing, as revealed on lilting renditions of "Where or When" and "Stars Fell on Alabama." Of course, the title track is the main attraction of the disc, garnering its reputation with gorgeously delicate work by the entire ensemble. The epitome of Smith's mesmerizing, soporific style of jazz, MOONLIGHT IN VERMONT is all that most listeners ...

Introducing Doug Raney CD music
$31.15 Although it is 160 minutes long and shot with breathtaking scope and sumptuousness, Bernardo Bertolucci's film is a story about claustrophobia. Pu Yi, the Manchurian emperor of China who ascended the throne in 1908 at the age of three, is a prisoner in the palace he rules over. Outside, real power changes hands with each coup d'etat. Pu Yi grows to manhood, is tutored ...
| | Impulse! Unmixed CD (2005)
Introducing Doug Raney music CDs
$6.65 The remix phenomenon continues apace with this fine set of Impulse classics reworked by some of the more respectable electronica artists of the 2000s. With a collection of source material that includes George Russell, Charles Mingus, Pharoah Sanders, and John Coltrane, among others, the set is already moving in the right direction, but the inventive, sometimes radical reworkings by the likes of Prefuse 73, the RZA, Kid Koala, and Sa Ra put this a cut above your average pedestrian, lounge-vibed, electronica/jazz outing.
Arranger: Chico O'Farrill.
Personnel: Clark Terry (vocals, trumpet, flugelhorn); Dizzy Gillespie (vocals, trumpet); Chico O'Farrill, Henry Hull, Joshie Armstead (vocals); Cornell Dupree, Gabor Szabo, Barry Galbraith (guitar); Michael White (violin, percussion); John Blake, Leroy Jenkins (violin); Ronald Lipscomb, Calo Scott (cello); Eric Dolphy (flute, alto saxophone); Yusef Lateef (bamboo flute); Pharoah Sanders (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, percussion, bells); Jerome Richardson (soprano saxophone, baritone saxophone); Oliver Nelson (alto saxophone, ...
| | Horace Silver Serenade To A Soul Sister CD (1968) Japan
Introducing Doug Raney songs
$21.49 One of the last great Horace Silver albums for Blue Note, Serenade to a Soul Sister is also one of the pianist's most infectiously cheerful, good-humored outings. It was recorded at two separate early-1968 sessions with two mostly different quintets, both featuring trumpeter Charles Tolliver and alternating tenor saxophonists Stanley Turrentine and Bennie Maupin, bassists Bob Cranshaw and John Williams, and drummers ...
