| | Alan Hawkshaw Mo'Hawk CD (2003)
Brikama music CDs
$15.95 Like many an active British session player in the 1960s and 1970s, Alan Hawkshaw, in addition to playing on many records by stars, did some recording as part of studio-only bands and for music library albums. Mo'Hawk selects 20 such tracks from 1967-1975, emphasizing ones that put his soul-rock-jazz Hammond organ to the fore. Some were credited to bands when first released -- four to the Mohawks, one to the Salon Band, and one to Rumplestiltskin. But the rest evidently come from music library albums for Keith Prowse Music (though the liner notes don't give precise details on the origination of some tracks), which were heard by few back when they were recorded, and not always even used in TV or cinema. Hawkshaw is a very good organist, but this material does betray its origins as pieces that were, after all, often hastily composed for cheap budget albums or as incidental background music to be considered for movies and television. As a consequence, it's largely generic party music from various phases of Swinging London, albeit gutsier and more soulful than much other such music that made its way into period films. And while Hawkshaw plays his parts with some aplomb, when you have this sort of material (mostly written by Hawkshaw, alas), it isn't going to give Georgie Fame sleepless nights. Various shades of easy listening, soul, funk, jazz, and pop-psychedelia make their way into the tracks, none of the songs ...
| | New Stories Speakin' Out CD (1999)
Brikama songs
$12.59 For their second album, the New Stories trio pretty much follows the same blueprint it used for its first album for setting its program, mostly originals with a few pop and jazz standards added on. The major difference from the initial outing is the addition of hard blowing tenor sax man Ernie Watts on some of the tracks. When he's there, he forces a change in the group's playing modus operandi. With hard bopper Watts on board, there's little time for the kind of introspection heard on their first release. Watts clearly challenges the group to loosen up and let it all hang out, which it does on such cuts as "The Jordy Strut." But this is not entirely a hard blowing session. The one pop standard, "My One and Only Love" gets a melodic working over, led by Marc Seales' gently foraging piano. This cut is one of several where Doug Miller shows he is a true virtuoso on bass. His role is in no way limited to the traditional four to the beat rhythm, but is melodically expansive. Watts sits this cut out. He also sits out a finely chiseled interpretation of a song not recorded nearly enough, "So Near, So Far." The same can't be said of Pat Metheny's "In Her Family," which, despite ...

| | Jesus "Chucho" Valdes Doble Gigante: The Latin Jazz Sides CD (2004)
Brikama CD music
$9.99 A true giant of Cuban music, Chucho Valdés has also been one of the world's top jazz pianists during the past few decades. Doble Gigante has a strong sampling of his work from several different time periods. The opening "Chorrino" is a trio outing from 1997 and there are three quartet showcases from 1965 that show that Valdés had his own original style from early in his career. The remainder of this CD is from 1978. "Este Camino Largo" is an excellent duet with altoist Paquito d'Rivera, and "Mambo Influenciado" puts trumpeter Arturo Sandoval in the spotlight. The other eight selections feature Irakere, the Cuban jazz and world music group that Valdés founded and led for many years. Some of the selections are danceable salsa rather than jazz, but there are also some stirring performances along with a generous sampling of Valdés' piano. While not for completists, Doble Gigante serves as an excellent introduction to the music and playing of Chucho Valdés. ~ Scott Yanow
In this second CD release of Chuchos Vald‚s on Yemay Records, he recorded in Areito Studios (La Habana, Cuba) featuring the extraordinary Buena Vista Social Club's Orlando Cachaito Lopez (bass), Arturo Sandoval (trumpet), Carlos Averhoff (sax), Carlos del ...
