One of the finest indie rock albums of the late 1980s and early '90s, Prisonshake's the ROARING THIRD stands out in part because of how remarkably straightforward it is. Producer Andy Shernoff (a founding member of NYC punk legends the Dictators) gives the tracks considerable muscle and adds just enough grit to ensure that the album never comes off as a bid for total mainstream acceptance. Of course with P-Shake main men Doug Enkler and Robert Griffin at the helm this would hardly be a concern anyway. The duo's dedication to art-before-commerce comes across on songs such as "Two Sisters," "Carthage Burns," and "Precious"--tough, swaggering numbers that ignore rock's glitz and excess while also avoiding the pitfalls of indie rock preciousness. Released on Griffin's own Scat Records (the one-time home of indie Heisman winners Guided By Voices), THE ROARING THIRD is a record that demands to be heard no matter how long its creators have to wait.
