PeteStrumentals follows Jay Dee's Welcome 2 Detroit as the second offering in BBE's producer spotlight "Beat Generation" series. If you approach Pete Rock's joint as a song-oriented pop album, you may feel disappointed. Only two tracks ("Cake" and "Nothin' Lesser - Jamie's Mix") feature MCs and the repetitive, consistently mid-tempo beats get somewhat monotonous by the end of most tracks. If you approach the album as a radical work of sonic architecture, you may also feel disappointed, since Rock's relatively old-school sensibility isn't likely to make you hear music in a completely new way. But if you approach PeteStrumentals on its own terms -- as a laid-back collection of atmospheric beats ideal for late-night chilling or freestyling over -- then you may enjoy Pete Rock's soulful funk-jazz grooves, which are first rate for this type of recording. The deep bass and whispered "play back" vocal sample on "For the People," jazzy piano loop on "Hip Hopcrisy," big-band sax on "Smooth Sailing," layered horns and vibes on "Pete's Jazz," and strings on "Give It to Y'all" (as well as the scratching that starts about two minutes into the song) all fit together to form a first-rate instrumental joint. The MC tracks with Rock Marciano, Divine, Godfree, and Laku are located near the end of the album; this makes them seem almost like bonus tracks, or perhaps a late attempt to ensure that the listener hasn't nodded off, but they still fit fine in the overall flow of PeteStrumentals. ~ Todd Kristel

Petestrumentals songs
$8.09 (MP3 Available for Download) Diamond D had quietly provided some exciting production work and made strides within the rap music industry and community throughout the early '90s, but his name didn't become immediately recognizable until his classic guest appearance rapping on A Tribe Called Quest's "Show Business" ("Take it from Diamond/It's like mountain climbing/When it comes to rhyming/You gotta put your time in"), off their masterful second album, The Low End Theory. Even amid vintage verses by such lauded hip-hop company as Tribe's Q-Tip and Phife and Brand Nubian's Lord Jamar and Sadat X, something about Diamond D's forthright and rock-solid, but totally laid-back, style stood out. Hip-hop heads waiting to hear more from him were rewarded with a veritable wealth of treasures when Stunts, Blunts & Hip-Hop, Diamond D's debut album, was released the following year. The album instantly became -- and remains ...

Petestrumentals music CDs
$12.65 (MP3 Available for Download) A label that bases a compilation on its number one singles seems like it's more concerned with patting itself on the back than giving the consumer something useful. In Def Jam's case, #1 Spot serves both causes. Arranged in chronological order covering nearly 20 years, the disc begins with Oran "Juice" Jones' equally dramatic and gut-busting "The Rain" (an inspiration R. Kelly should've thought about taking more to heart for the "Trapped in the Closet" saga) and closes with Ludacris' hulking "Stand Up," the only inclusion with no discernible connection to R&B. Each selection hit the top of Billboard's ...
| | Tha Dogg Pound Cali Iz Active CD (2006) Edited
Petestrumentals songs
$14.45 Long departed for lucrative solo careers, Snoop Dogg's protégé duo of Daz Dillinger and Kurupt, better known as Tha Dogg Pound, reunite for CALI IZ ACTIVE, the duo's first official album since their sophomore effort, 2002. Crossing up their long-held West Coast style with technically superior production by Swizz Beats, Southern crunk courtesy of David Banner and Jazze Pha, and many more high-profile guest shots, CALI IZ ACTIVE serves as a wake-up call for California, in particular Long Beach County, to resume the throne as holders of the country's most dominant rap sound--G Funk. The funk reigns supreme on tracks like "Hard on a Hoe," but finds new life in sped-up, crunked out tracks like "It's Craccin' All Night" and "Sittin' on 23'z."
With its crooked, crooked West Coast beat and the glorious TGIF chorus thrown on top of it, lead single "Cali Iz Active" came on the scene and ruled every beatbox that knew what was up. But ...
