The music of Claude Debussy, with its exotic color and quirky harmonies is well suited to performance on any number of different instruments. Japanese synthesizer wizard Tomita realized that the moog synthesizer, with its almost limitless palette of colors and sounds, would be ideal for Debussy's music. "Snowflakes Are Dancing" is Tomita's electronic vision of Debussy.
The moog synthesizer creates sounds that defy description. The synthesizer also has the ability to recreate the sounds of such traditional instruments as the harpsichord, organ, trumpet and strings. The synthesizer can mimic sound of the human voice. Tomita draws on all of these possibilities in his presentation of Debussy's music. Debussy favorites such as "Clair de lune" and "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" take on a new life in Tomita's treatment. For example, the sound of the ocean, punctuated by the cries of seagulls provides the ideal stage for Tomita's treatment of "The Engulfed Cathedral." Tomita's eccentricity will keep listeners on their toes and the crystal clear sound quality will test their speakers. This is Debussy like you have never heard before; it is the stuff of fantasy and dreams.

Switzerland's Lucerne Festival is one of the most important annual festivals of classical music in the world. Set in the rarified beauty of the lakeside town of Lucerne, where tourists come to gaze at the medieval castles and covered bridges, the Festival attracts the most acclaimed and famous classical musicians in the world. In 2003, the Festival Orchestra was conducted by the renowned Claudio Abbado, who led his expert musicians in a gorgeous performance of Mahler's second symphony, "Resurrection." Captured here in all of its visual and aural beauty, the fine performance also featured the talents of soprano Eteri Gvazava and Anna Larsson.
Claudio Abbado conducts this performance with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra in its first season at the 2003 Lucerne festival. The ensemble includes players from the Berlin Philharmonic, internationally famous soloists, and ensembles including the Sabine Meyer Ensemble, Hagen Quartet, and Mahler Chamber Orchestra. Sigur Ros's fifth studio full-length, MED SUD I EYRUM VID SPILUM ENDALAUST, begins with such a tour de force of orchestral pop in the first half, listeners will recall Brian Wilson's self-describing "teenage symphonies to God." Pilfering from both the Arcade Fire--see the rousing second track "Inni Mer Syngur Vitleysingur"--and Animal Collective--see the lead-off single "Gobbledigook"--in equal measure, the Icelandic quartet create a masterwork that weds their soaring bombast to near-conventional pop structures and adds an experimental joy to their normally somber obsessiveness. The latter half of MED SUD is more in line with their previous effort, TAKK..., with more lived-in textures and slower paces, but after the poppy first half, the change is welcome. The album was recorded in a house in Reykjavik by Flood, who finds the same hooks and sweeping passion here that he did over two decades before engineering U2's THE JOSHUA TREE.
