Blackmore's Night features the talents of guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and vocalist Candice Night. Blackmore is best known for his work with the rock band Rainbow, and before that, the legendary group Deep Purple. However he has long since been ... Full Descriptioninterested in medieval and Renaissance music.
On UNDER A VIOLET MOON, Blackmore and Night blend together acoustic pop with English medieval music. To add an air of authenticity, they employ such instruments as a hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, pennywhistles, and vintage tambourines. However, Blackmore's guitar is the backbone of this music, and he accompanies Night with unerring sensitivity. Night sings in a relaxed mezzo-soprano on each piece. Most of all, listeners will enjoy following the lyrics, since each tune is centered on an exciting medieval tale. Highlights include the war song "March the Heroes Home," the wistful "Castles and Dreams," and the forlorn "Catherine Howard's Fate." On the latter, Night sings of heartbreak, betrayal, and lovesickness. Even though this melody is antiquated, and the lyric is sung in Middle English, this story is wholly universal. UNDER A VIOLET MOON is the perfect album for those who wish to dabble in light, non-academic period music.

Under A Violet Moon music CDs
$11.59 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin ...

$10.85 Already a legend in its own meagre lifetime, this startling debut shrouded itself in controversy, from its original Robert Williams artwork to Axl Rose's unblinking accounts of LA's underbelly. This mawkish storytelling, combined with a brattish collective swagger and a surprisingly mature approach to their songs, guaranteed Guns N' Roses a speedy notoriety that was to serve their legend brilliantly. From the laconic "Paradise City" to the achingly beautiful "Sweet Child O' Mine," or the furious "Welcome To The Jungle," the record brims with a brutal integrity. An album they could never surpass even if they had stayed together.

$19.09 After much debate and a labored attempt at completing his contributions to a new studio offering, a disenchanted Matt Barlow chose to step down as vocalist of power-metal veterans Iced Earth. Enter Tim "Ripper" Owens, who was eagerly awaiting a formal announcement that metal god Rob Halford had rejoined his then-band, Judas Priest. Anticipating the obvious (and long-rumored inevitable), Owens weighed a number of offers before joining forces with Iced Earth. He quickly helped them finish their recording, and enthusiastically joined their ranks.

Wonderful music, excellent musicians Ritchie Blackmore is the best! And he has a congenial vocalist: Candice Night. It's a perfect combination between the perfect guitar play of Ritchie, the crystal voice of Candice and wonderful melodies, written by Ritchie Blackmore. Sit down, listen to the music and well-being growth in your mind. Submitted by franz.katzer (Vienna, Austria, Europe) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
My Opinion This is an album by B.N. that I had never heard before...absolutely outstanding! Blackmore is killer on guitar and Night has the voice of life...besides that, the rest of the band is extremely good at what they do. Very, very good music... Truly original and perhaps an acquired taste... I like this album, though not one of Blackmore's Night best I believe. A cross between traditional/folk/rock/pop is the only way I know how to pretty much describe them. The vocals are excellent, especially the lead female vocalist- lovely, clear voice! Good variety of instruments and catchy tunes. I think you have to be more open-minded musically and like the above influences. It's unique and a good album overall.
