In turning the story of the famed Paris nightclub the Moulin Rouge into a modern day fable celebrating love and creative inspiration, Baz Luhrman creates an accompanying soundtrack that exalts 20th century pop composers at the same time as it's blurring their musical boundaries. It's an approach best exemplified by dramatic leads Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor during the gorgeous "Elephant Love Melody," an endearing call-and-response during which lines from songs by the Beatles, Kiss, U2, Wings, and Thelma Houston are tossed back and forth as the duo argue over their burgeoning emotional involvement.
Elsewhere, Kidman quotes Madonna ("Material Girl") and Marilyn Monroe ("Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend") amidst brassy, Vegas-like arrangements and dance beats. McGregor also pulls off a gorgeous version of Elton John's "Your Song," complete with sweeping orchestration, Placido Domingo's swooping tenor, and a powerful children's chorus. Much like music, cartoons are a universal medium that appeals to kids of all ages. With that concept in mind, Dreamworks has cobbled together a broad range of pop for the soundtrack to the computer-animated fairytale SHREK. Smashmouth checks in twice with the 1999 hit "All Star" and a dub-flavored cover of The Monkees' "I'm A Believer." Guilty pleasures abound, whether it's Leslie Carter (sister of Aaron and Backstreeter Nick) and her use of percolating beats and scratches on the cotton-candy "Like Wow!" or the Baha Men blowing away their potential one-hit wonder status with the infectious party chant "Best Years Of Our Lives." The scale also slides to the sophisticated side of the spectrum as evidenced by Rufus Wainwright's gorgeous rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and E's quirky "My Beloved Monster." Well, the question is no longer whether she's a little girl or a woman--Britney Spears has obviously been the latter for some time. The question now is how long she'll be able to pretend at keeping us guessing, and how long we'll pretend not to know the answer. With BRITNEY she continues the dance of corrupted youth and innocence to the delight of both her female fans and dirty old and young men everywhere.
While it's by no means the best song on the album, the ballad "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" typifies her commercial appeal (interestingly, though she writes several songs here, this one was written for her). The songs that ring truest here are those penned by Spears herself, such as the Chic-influenced "Anticipating" and the R&B flavored "Lonely," which play down the innocent girl/tart predicament in favor of presumably more realistic scenarios such as checking out her lipstick in the former and relationship dilemmas in the latter. Elsewhere she convincingly reduces Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'N' Roll" to its bubblegum essentials, while her interpretation of main squeeze Justin Timberlake's "What It's Like to Be Me" is arguably BRITNEY's finest moment.
