| | Wendy & Bonnie Genesis CD Wendy & Bonnie Discography of CDs
San Francsico sisters Wendy and Bonnie Flower (allegedly their real last name) released their lone album, GENESIS, in 1969. A dreamy soft-psych/folk-rock affair, it centered on the teenage sisters' vocal harmonies and ethereal songs. A flop at the time, it became a collector's item over subsequent decades before it was finally reissued in 2001. The 2008 deluxe edition includes a whole extra disc of rarities, including alternate takes and demos, crucially adding to the too-short legacy the one-shot duo left behind.

Rolling Stone (p.127) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he holy grail for fans of SF pop-pscyh....[A] sweetly sad 1968 lost gem..." Mojo (Publisher) (6/02, p.169) - "...A unique beauty...Drifting, mystical, Latin-flavored: somebody once called it 'stoner samba'. The melodies and harmonies are unfailingly strong and atmospheric.." | | Vernon Reid Known Unknown CD (2004)
Genesis CD music
$10.69 Vernon Reid finally follows up his solo debut with Known Unknown, a mere eight years (!) after Mistaken Identity. The template is basically the same: Reid and his longtime bandmates keyboardist Leon Gruenbaum and bassist Hank Schroy (drummer Marlon Browden is new for this recording) set up deceptively simple little heads and then just throw down. Reid gets some amazingly thick tones out of his guitar, and his playing sounds like no one else. Mistaken Identity was graced with some great clarinet blowing, courtesy of Don Byron. Byron sits out this date (although one of the solos in "Outskirts" sure sounds like clarinet), but that just gives Gruenbaum more room to stretch out. Byron's presence is missed, to be sure, but Gruenbaum turns in some absolutely head-spinning solos, often on his own keyboard invention, the Samchillian Tip Tip Tip Chee ...
| | Jason Boland Somewhere In The Middle CD (2004)
Genesis music CDs
$10.19 If Jason Boland reminds one of David Allan Coe and Hank Williams, Jr., well, that's probably just fine with him. From the opening tune, he's determined to remind the listener -- as the Outlaws did in the '70s -- that country music ain't what it used to be. Whatever happened, after all, to good old boys who drank their bourbon straight, who considered fighting a hobby, and who had never heard of feminism? On the good side, this old-fashioned attitude means that Boland ...
| | Mott The Hoople Family Anthology CDs (2005) (Import) England; United Kingdom
Genesis songs
$16.19 There are ten songs by Mott the Hoople on this two-CD collection, Family Anthology, but about two-thirds of it contains tracks by Mott the Hoople-related artists, not Mott the Hoople themselves. You also get solo efforts by various members of the band, as well as groups in which members played before Mott the Hoople formed (such as the Rats and the Doc Thomas Group) and after Mott disbanded (like British Lions). It's not a great starting point for a highly listenable anthology, though at least the concept will appeal to hardcore Mott the Hoople fans. The execution isn't so good, however, as it jumbles together 32 recordings spanning the years 1964 through 2005; in other words, four decades of very different styles, not all of them strongly related to what Mott the Hoople did while they were active. The discs are sequenced so they jump back and forth all over the place chronologically, and what's more, more than two-thirds of it has already been issued on CD, usually on other releases from the same label (Angel Air) responsible for this compilation. Nothing's truly essential, but there are a few interesting items here, whether live recordings from Mott the Hoople's early-'70s prime; a previously unreleased outtake from their Mad Shadows album, "Can You Sing the Song That I Sing"; Mick Ralphs' original early-'70s demo of "Can't Get Enough"; and odds and ends from '60s groups predating Mott the Hoople's formation, going all the way back to Les Norman & the Buddies' 1964 demo of "I Ain't Got You" (with Ralphs on guitar). Admittedly, most of these '60s rarities are generic period British R&B/rock, blues-rock, and psychedelia without any obvious similarities to Mott the Hoople, but they're more interesting than the various post-Mott projects, which (as in Dale Buffin Griffin's 1993 cover of "The Lady Is a Tramp") can be pretty desultory. In its favor, this set was produced with ex-members' cooperation, and has a 24-page booklet of detailed liner notes. Only Mott the Hoople completists will want it, however, and even they might already have much of it on previous CD releases. ~ Richie Unterberger
This 2cd set released with the bands full co-operation and participation is the ultimate MTH release with 2 MTH tracks which have never before been released. Also included are live versions from 1970 to 1974 of a number of MTH 'hits'.Included informative 28 page sleeve notes.

| | Ultravox! CD (1977) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; United Kingdom
Genesis album
$11.39 Depeche Mode claimed to be punks with synthesizers, but it was Ultravox! who first showed the kind of dangerous rhythms that keyboards could create. The quintet certainly had their antecedents -- Hawkwind, Roxy Music, and Kraftwerk to name but a few, but still it was the group's 1977 eponymous debut's grandeur (courtesy of producer Eno), wrapped in the ravaged moods and lyrical themes of collapse and decay that transported '70s rock from the bloated pastures of the past to the futuristic dystopias predicted by punk. Epic tales of alienation, disillusion, and disintegration reflected the contemporary holocaust of Britain's collapse, while accurately prophesying the dance through society's cemetery and the graveyards of empires that were to be the Thatcher/Reagan years. "Saturday Night in the City of the Dead," "Wide Boys," "The Wild, the Beautiful and the Damned," "Dangerous Rhythm," and "Slip Away" all simultaneously bemoaned and ...
