Issued in 1999, CLARITY found emo darlings Jimmy Eat World reaching a substantially larger audience, thanks in part to sharper, catchier songwriting. While the outing sees the Arizona-based band, led by singer/guitarist Jim Adkins, offering up hook-driven anthems such as "Lucky Denver Mint," it also expands the group's sound considerably, particularly on the dynamic closing epic, "Goodbye Sky Harbor," and paves the way for Jimmy Eat World's 2001 breakthrough album.
Recorded at Sound City, Van Nuys, California and Clear Lake Audio, North Hollywood, California. Originally released on Capitol (55950).
Jimmy Eat World: Jim Adkins (vocals, guitar, piano, Farfisa organ, Hammond B-3 organ, Casiotone keyboard, bass, percussion); Tom Linton (guitar); Mark Trombino (Farfisa organ, Minimoog synthesizer, percussion, programming); Zach Lind (vibraphone, bass, drums, percussion, bells, chimes); Rick Burch (bass).
Additional personnel: Joel Derouin (violin); Suzie Katayama (cello).

Q (8/02, p.142) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...A focused and affecting effort....it boasts addictive chuggers aplenty..." CMJ (2/15/99, p.26) - "...feels like an outpouring of underscored emotion....the perfect soundtrack to feeling overwhelmed; when you're reeling, the album is an adequate salve to dull the pain." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.52) - "Overflowing with flawless melodies backed up not only by magnificent musicianship but a ton of heart..." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.49) - "From start to finish, it's shot through with an emotive grace, beautifully crafted melodies and a warmth that ensures that you feel the songs every bit as much as you hear them."
The best melodic punk around. These guys just know how to make music. Every CD is packed with one great song after another. I had first bought "Bleed American" and was totally blown away. I heard that "Clarity" was even better, so when I bought it, I was blown away once more. These guys are totally rockin'. The best part is that I like in Arizona and the hometown crowd is so into Jimmy Eat World it is amazing. Submitted by a reviewer (Tucson, AZ) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo

You own this album, right? this is good music. different from Static Prevails, but the arizona boys' best album, hands down, and i wouldn't even ask them to surpass it. the vocals, the guitars, bass, drums, strings, you name it. from start to finish, i love everything about this recording. it's sweet, it's disenchanted, it's emotionally charged writing and it rocks. i love every song on here, but "For Me, This is Heaven" is likely my favorite track. it starts out with one guitar, goes crazy with different parts throughout the song, has great acoustic work, and ends with the simple keys. it's one of those "our song" songs if you've ever been in love(or in-adoration, as the case may be). i don't think i could label this if i tried. bottom line, i love it. so far, it's my favorite album of all-time. Music with passion! This album is the best of the year. It contains such power and emotion. Every song has such an awesome display of driving emotional sound that words can't describe justly the exceptional talent this band has. The music is one of a kind. I can listen to it over and over.
