This 2-CD Deluxe Edition of LIVE AT LEEDS, recorded on February 14, 1970, contains the entire show including all of TOMMY which was previously unreleased.
Recorded live at Leeds University, Leeds, England on February 14, 1970. Originally released on Decca (79175) in May 1970.
In addition to making some of the finest studio albums in rock history (ranging in approach from proto-pop-punk to the first rock operas), the Who, live, epitomized the brash, electrifying energy that put a new face on the music in the 1960s. The original LIVE AT LEEDS album, released in 1970, looked straight into the eye of this hurricane on a single disc featuring six tracks. A 1995 reissue doubled the number of songs. The DELUXE EDITION, however, released in 2001, is the first document to feature the Leeds concert in its entirety. Spread out over two discs, this most recent update is definitive, and includes a 28-page booklet, sections of band-audience banter, and--most importantly--a full performance of TOMMY. Singer/harmonica player/guitarist John Mayall was best known as a key figure in the '60s British blues boom, fronting a band containing future members of Cream, Fleetwood Mac, and Colosseum among others. However, after releasing a number of rock-edged electric blues albums, Mayall changed direction in 1969. Recorded live a New York's Fillmore East, THE TURNING POINT finds Mayall fronting an all-acoustic four-piece including guitarist Jon Mark and sax player Johnny Almond, who would later gain renown as the progressive rock outfit Mark-Almond.

In the '70s, guitarist Grant Green turned to an R&B and funk style in order to keep up with the times and invite as wide an audience as possible. At the time, critics cried foul at what they called "selling out" and disavowed Green from their critical radar. Fast forwarding to the '90s, this period of Green's career became in great demand as the "acid jazz" craze came into vogue. BLUE BREAKBEATS collects some of Green's more revered works from this period. These are the tracks that DJs constantly sample and loop to form new electronically manipulated works.
To be sure, the grooves here are gritty and the melodies, what little there are, are simple and brash, but the determined mood and downright funkiness is nothing to sneeze at. Cuts like James Brown's "Ain't It Funky Now" and the immensely popular "Sookie Sookie" are staples in any self-respecting DJ's arsenal. The driving beats of Ben Dixon's "Cantaloupe Woman" and the stunning "The Final Comedown" offer plenty of fertile sampling opportunities as well.
