Swiss Suite
$6.55 Dave Brubeck's TIME OUT ranks alongside Miles Davis' KIND OF BLUE as one of the few advanced jazz masterpieces to achieve great commercial success. In fact, the widespread popularity of TIME OUT, with its cool-toned ambience, smooth style, and elements borrowed from classical music, helped make modern jazz a mainstream phenomenon.
The ubiquitous "Take Five" may be overplayed, but that doesn't diminish the joy of its complex melodic hooks, its perfectly executed solos, or the swinging slink of its 5/4 signature. "Blue Rondo a la Turk" collages Mozart, cool swing, and Brubeck's own classically oriented piano style, and the airy, delicate "Everybody's Jumpin'" showcases the lyrical splendor of saxophonist Paul Desmond. With bassist Gene Wright and drummer Joe Morello keeping the tricky rhythms agile and swift, the Dave Brubeck Quartet ...
| | Gerry Mulligan Night Lights CD (1963)
Swiss Suite
$12.39 NIGHT LIGHTS isn't your typical Gerry Mulligan session, the music somewhat warmer than is usually the case for this musician. "Night Lights" itself is a beautiful mood piece with the leader providing the hauntingly simple theme on piano himself. (An added CD bonus is the inclusion of another version from 1965 on which Mulligan ...

| | Bill Holman Band Live CD (2005)
Swiss Suite
$13.15 Grammy Award winning Arranger and Band Leader Bill Holman brings us his jazz big band recorded live in 2004. Bill Holman introduces many new and exciting compositions and arrangements with his star packed LA based jazz big band. The Bill Holman Band is considered one of the greatest working big bands in jazz today:"This is the first album since 1997 by The Bill Holman Band. Why there was so long an interregnum between recordings by an essential cultural institution requires a discussion of conditions in the music industry and the society at large. You will not find that discussion here. Let us simply shout hooray, and praise impresario Ken Poston for including the band in one of his periodic jazz events, and Graham Carter of Jazzed Media for capturing the performance.Typical of how a slightly older generation of arrangers regards Holman is something the late Ralph Burns told me about Willis's writing: "It's pure jazz, but he writes everything very classically. It's linear and simple and clear." From one younger arranger, Bill Kirchner: "His linear concepts are among the most important innovations ever used in a jazz orchestra," and another, Don Sebesky: "I hear nothing, past or present, that comes close to (his writing) because he combines the objective and subjective parts of music into a seamless whole." From a contemporary, Bob Brookmeyer: "Of all the other peoples' music I've played in my life, I'd rather play Bill Holman's. He makes it such a delight. It's so naturally well crafted that it speaks when you play it." Some of the members of the 2004 ...

$15.49 His third solo album still warm on the racks, controversial rapper 2PAC follows up with this group side project. It's a gangsta record, of course, loaded with tales of young men and their guns. But neither 2PAC nor anyone else in the genre has ever sounded so buoyant or light.
Floating on soulful loops borrowed from the Isley Brothers, Curtis Mayfield and others, these tales soften their inevitable outcome (either you get killed, or your best friend does) with humor and warmth. And a good half of them actually swing. The chorus of "Stay True" bends the melody of Prince's anti-drug song "Pop Life" into a recitation of the code of the street, "gotta do what you gotta do"--a neat little irony that makes the rhythm that much sweeter. "Pour Out A Little Liquor" and "How Long Will They Mourn Me" are poignant, even spiritual--buddy songs played out amidst street warfare.
On his solo albums, 2PAC can be didactic, carefully laying out causes and effects as if he knows critics are staring over his shoulders. THUG LIFE is about causes and effects too. "Cradle To The Grave" is a 6-minute epic of what a bad environment can do for you. Yet on THUG LIFE, the group sounds freer to swing both its beats and its lyrics. Having your buddies around can help.
Additional personnel includes: Albert Washington, Jr., Rochell (background vocals); Nate Dogg.

| | Billie Holiday At Storyville CD (1988)
Swiss Suite
$9.95 This 24-bit remastering of the tapes (taken originally from radio broadcasts) of Holiday's performance at Boston's famous Storyville Club (recorded in '51 and '53 respectively) vastly improves on the originals. The sound quality of the previous versions highlighted vocals and piano but left the rhythm section almost indiscernible. Such is not the case here, and the disc finds Holiday in supremely relaxed, well-weathered voice.
By the early '50s, Holiday's tone and timbre were already markedly different from her light, sensitive approach of the '40s. Deeper, richer, and more heavily stylized, her delivery here is gorgeously drowsy, an aesthetic heightened by the intimate setting and feel of the live nightclub to the point where both Lady and the combo border on the seductive consistency of molasses. Such classics as "Willow Weep For Me" and the marvelously expressive "I Love You, Porgy" are interspersed with the lovely "I Cover The Waterfront" ...
