| | Oliver Nelson Swiss Suite CD - Import Oliver Nelson Discography of CDs
Saxophonist Oliver Nelson stretches out on SWISS SUITE, which includes the songs "Stolen Moments" and "Blues and the Abstract Truth," among others.
The German edition has remastered sound and original artwork.
24bit Digitally remastered with restored original artwork.
Recorded at the 1971 Montreux Jazz Festival, this big-band outing features a mostly all-star band and altoist Oliver Nelson (who wrote all of the arrangements and compositions) and trumpeter Danny Moore on remakes of "Stolen Moments," "Black, Brown & Beautiful" and "Blues and the Abstract Truth." However it is the nearly 27-minute "Swiss Suite" that dominates this album and although tenorman Gato Barbieri has a couple of raging solos, it is a five-minute segment when guest altoist Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson plays the blues that is most memorable. Vinson's classic spot alone is worth the price of this hard-to-find LP. ~ Scott Yanow Oliver Nelson Swiss Suite Songs | 1. | Swiss Suite - (studio) |

Swiss Suite album
$6.55 Dave Brubeck's TIME OUT ranks alongside Miles Davis' KIND OF BLUE as one of the few advanced jazz masterpieces to achieve great commercial success. In fact, the widespread popularity of TIME OUT, with its cool-toned ambience, smooth style, and elements borrowed from classical music, helped make modern jazz a mainstream phenomenon.
The ubiquitous "Take Five" may be overplayed, but ...
| | Gerry Mulligan Night Lights CD (1963)
Swiss Suite CD music
$11.45 NIGHT LIGHTS isn't your typical Gerry Mulligan session, the music somewhat warmer than is usually the case for this musician. "Night Lights" itself is a beautiful mood piece with the leader providing the hauntingly simple theme on piano himself. (An added CD bonus is the inclusion of another version from 1965 on which Mulligan takes ...
| | Stan Getz Cafe Montmartre CD (2003)
Swiss Suite music CDs
$9.95 Recorded live at Cafe Montmartre, Copenhagen, Denmark on July 6, 1987 & March 3-6, 1991.
Before his death after a several year battle with cancer, Stan Getz continued to release a flurry of outstanding recordings. Cafe Montmartre is a compilation of several live performances at the famous Copenhagen club with pianist Kenny Barron, selected from three earlier CDs, the 1987 quartet dates Anniversary! and Serenity, plus the two-disc set People Time from 1991. Getz was a masterful ballad interpreter and delivers with the mournful tribute "I Remember Clifford" and an absolutely haunting, emotionally charged take of Billy Strayhorn's "Blood Count" (written as its composer lay dying of cancer). Barron makes a strong case as one of Getz's ...
| | Bill Holman Band Live CD (2005)
Swiss Suite songs
$13.45 Although Bill Holman is one of the all-time great arrangers and the leader of a stirring big band in the Los Angeles area, this was his first recording as a leader in seven years. Performed at a Maynard Ferguson tribute convention/festival put on by Ken Poston, the music played by the Bill Holman Orchestra is a little more boppish than usual for a Holman set, particularly the romping "Zoot 'n' Al," a tribute to Zoot Sims and Al Cohn. However, Holman's arrangements are quite complex, full of surprises and full of excitement. Whether it be a major reworking of the Beatles' "A Day in the Life" and Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee," or such originals as "Woodrow" (for Woody Herman) and "The Bebop Love Song," the music is full of surprising twists and turns. The solos are uniformly excellent from the impressive crew of Los Angeles-area players, but it is the Holman arrangements that are most unique. Highly recommended to fans of modern jazz big bands. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Pepper Adams Critics' Choice CD (1957)
Swiss Suite CD music
$12.35 Pepper Adams was one of the greatest jazz baritone saxophonists of all time. During a time when Gerry Mulligan's cool-toned baritone was very influential, Adams rose to prominence with a harder and bigger sound, much more hard bop than cool. This relatively obscure release, originally an LP for the World Pacific label, finds the baritonist in Los Angeles matching his hard-driving style with several players identified with West Coast cool jazz. Trumpeter Lee Katzman, who is on every selection but "Blackout Blues" and "Four Funky People," has a tone closer to Chet Baker than to Donald Byrd, but fits in well with Adams. The rhythm section is mostly laid-back and quiet ...
| | Tupac Thug Life, Vol. 1 CD (1994)
Swiss Suite music CDs
$15.49 Additional personnel includes: Albert Washington, Jr., Rochell (background vocals); Nate Dogg.
His third solo album still warm on the racks, controversial rapper 2PAC follows up with this group side project. It's a gangsta record, of course, loaded with tales of young men and their guns. But neither 2PAC nor anyone else in the genre has ever sounded so buoyant or light.
Floating on soulful loops borrowed from the Isley Brothers, Curtis Mayfield and others, these tales soften their inevitable outcome (either you get killed, or your best friend does) with humor and warmth. And a good half of them actually swing. The chorus of "Stay True" bends the melody of Prince's anti-drug song "Pop Life" into a recitation of the code of the street, "gotta do what you gotta do"--a neat little irony that makes the rhythm that much sweeter. "Pour Out A Little Liquor" and "How Long Will They Mourn Me" are poignant, even spiritual--buddy songs played out amidst street warfare.
On his solo albums, 2PAC can be didactic, carefully laying out causes and effects as if he knows critics are staring over his shoulders. THUG LIFE is about causes and effects too. "Cradle To The Grave" is a 6-minute epic of what a bad environment can do for you. Yet on THUG LIFE, the group sounds freer to swing both its beats and its lyrics. Having your buddies ...
| | Billie Holiday At Storyville CD (1988)
Swiss Suite songs
$9.95 This 24-bit remastering of the tapes (taken originally from radio broadcasts) of Holiday's performance at Boston's famous Storyville Club (recorded in '51 and '53 respectively) vastly improves on the originals. The sound quality of the previous versions highlighted vocals and piano but left the rhythm section almost indiscernible. Such is not the case here, and the disc finds Holiday in supremely relaxed, well-weathered ...
