The artistic progression from the band's self-titled debut to the following year's RIO was the greatest aesthetic leap of Duran Duran's career. The group moved from catchy but somewhat rudimentary New Romantic synth-funk to elegantly arranged, ... Full Descriptionsophisticated pop-rock, concentrating more on song structure than dance beats. For their efforts, they were rewarded with superstar status, due chiefly to "Hungry Like the Wolf," a lascivious tune that injects a welcome dose of rock & roll guitar. The most impressive tracks on RIO, though, are the more contemplative, balladic offerings, like "Lonely in Your Nightmare," "Save a Prayer," and especially "The Chauffer," with its stream-of-consciousness lyrics and unconventional structure, arty without seeming pretentious. If you only have one Duran Duran album, it should be RIO.

Hide Description Rio Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Possibly THE symbol of the 80's! I'm sorry, this has to be one of the best albums of the 80's. There is not a single dud song on it, and don't even get me started on those pioneering video clips! You get 4 on this CD-ROM and god it's hard staring at those gorgeous creatures in their prime...

When it hit in '82 . . . . . . . . . this album earned the band the acclaim they deserved. I wish only that Capitol/EMI had opted for the full versions of "Nightmare" and "Wolf." Anyway, it's a classic. Submitted by Gerald (California USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
WOW! This is a fantastic album from a remarkable music talent, Duran Duran. Strange, interesting lyrics from poet Simon LeBon interlaced with New Romantic sounds from the other bandmates takes the listener to exotic thoughts and locations, not to mention the early 80's with life's possibilities still before us. Highly recommended. Submitted by hansstory (Corpus Christi, TX USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Best Album of the 80's For their 2nd album, this is pretty damn good! I love all the songs on this album. Hear it for yourself and you'll love it just as much. If you don't, then start searching for the undeniable truth that you are just a fool. Submitted by a reviewer (Edgewood, NM) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Rio CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also a lovely rendition of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" that's topped only by Ron Wood's reappearance on a finale of the Stones' "Ruby Tuesday." VH1 PRESENTS THE CORRS LIVE IN DUBLIN is a fine mix of the band's ...
| | Spandau Ballet True CD (1983) Remastered; Enhanced CD
Rio music CDs
$12.49 While Spandau Ballet's first two albums earned them European popularity, their third, TRUE, made them worldwide stars. The idiosyncratic blend of Bowie, funk, New Wave, and electronics that marked their earlier work was traded in for a smoother, much more accessible sound here. One couldn't really accuse the band of selling out, though, as the elegantly soulful ballad sound at the heart of TRUE played a role in their musical inspiration from the beginning (remember, the New Romantics were essentially soul boys, not rockers). The title track, a glistening slow-dance classic, both literally and musically evocative of Marvin Gaye, was an international smash, and made Spandau Ballet a household name. "Lifeline" expands on this aspect of the group's ...
| | Duran Duran (1st LP) CD (1981) Remastered
Rio songs
$10.15 Subsequent releases would find the band moving more toward straight pop, becoming simultaneously less dance-oriented and less arty. The 1981 debut, however, is full of thumping, club-friendly beats and long, atmospheric tunes full of extended synthesizer-centered interludes. The fact that the boys were pop-savvy enough to add irresistible choruses to "Girls on Film," "Careless Memories," and "Planet Earth" doesn't hurt matters.
Along with Spandau Ballet, Visage, and others, Duran Duran led the early-'80s charge of the New Romantics, ...
| | Duran Duran Seven & The Ragged Tiger CD (1983) Remastered
Rio album
$11.39 By the release of 1983's SEVEN AND THE RAGGED TIGER, Duran Duran were genuine MTV-anointed superstars, which makes this set's somewhat more experimental vibe an impressive step. The band's original goal was to be a cross between Chic and the Sex Pistols, but most of SEVEN AND THE RAGGED TIGER explores a sort of glitter-tinged art-rock that occasionally resembles the first couple of albums by Sparks.
There were three enormous hits off this album: the jagged "Union of the Snake," the anthemic "New Moon On Monday," and "The Reflex," which was drastically remixed by Chic's Nile Rodgers for its single release. That version appears on DECADE and GREATEST, Duran Duran's two singles compilations. ...
| | Simon & Garfunkel Concert In Central Park CD (1982)
Rio CD music
$10.65 Recorded live in Central Park, New York, New York on September 19, 1981.
Years after they both inaugurated successful solo careers, the archetypal folk-rock duo reunited for a concert in their hometown. The performance, in New York City's Central Park, was a major media event, and there's an undeniable air of pageantry to the proceedings. Bringing together several generations of listeners, THE CONCERT IN CENTRAL PARK, as captured on this compelling aural document, delighted longtime Simon and Garfunkel fans and undoubtedly made many new ones. The album functions as a comprehensive live best-of, as the two stroll through immaculate, slightly revamped versions of their classics as well as some solo Simon hits. There's the fragile folk poetry of "April, Come She Will," the Latin spice of Simon's "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard," the generational anthem "Mrs. Robinson." Things close out on an appropriately unsettling ...

| | Bravery Sun And The Moon CD (2007)
Rio songs
$11.95 On its second album, THE SUN AND THE MOON, the Bravery keeps its strong 1980s influence intact, but eases up on the synthesizers, allowing for a warmer, guitar-driven sound that is enhanced by ace producer Brendan O'Brien (Pearl Jam, Train). While the New York City-based alt-rock band has largely ditched the glam/New Wave look, it's still clearly indebted to specific British acts--the mid-tempo lead single "Time Won't Let Me Go" features frontman Sam Endicott in full-on Robert Smith mode, and "This Is Not the End" works a riff ...
