In the years leading up to 2001's self-titled release, Jimmy Eat World racked up a sizable fan base through many of the normal routes for indie-rock bands (constant touring, split singles with popular scene bands, a few full-lengths and EPs ... Full Descriptionon both indie and major labels). However, what propels Jimmy Eat World to another level is their uncanny knack for appealing to a wide audience by cobbling together the jagged guitar sincerity of bands like Fugazi and Jawbox with the hooks bands like Green Day and Blink-182 rode to multi-platinum success, tempering these creations with touches of power-pop and metal.
The band immediately captures attention on JIMMY EAT WORLD's opening track (and one-time title track), "Bleed American," a scathing yet engaging fiery anthem made for radio (not to mention for uncontrollable singing along); better singles are few and far between. The band displays a punk sound for a few powerful songs before showing their skill at power balladry on the remarkably vulnerable "Your House." The true standout comes on "The Authority Song," not a John Mellencamp cover, but a power-pop masterstroke right out of the songbook of Big Star or the Flamin' Groovies.
Recorded at Cherokee, Los Angeles, California and Harddrive, North Hollywood, California.

Jimmy Eat World Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Smooth snickerbar This music is like eating a smooth chilled chocolate while watching soccer. Top five, without doubt Submitted by largeaaen (Sogne, Norway) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Super Catchy The title track is the catchiest song of the year. The next two tracks delight and sizzle as well. This is one of the most instantly accessable releases in recent memory. The production is big, sharp and shiny. The over all vibe seems almost to positioned towards modern rock radio, but the strong performances and reasonably consistent songwriting make this one of the top five CD's of 2001. Jimmy Eat World album
$9.35 Additional personnel includes: Joel Derouin, Marion De Leon (violin); Evan Wilson, Karie Prescott (viola); Larry Corbett (cello); Jon Clarke (winds); Dawn Beckman (background vocals).
MORNING VIEW was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical).
Incubus is ready to pave its own way in the modern rock scene. With the brooding and crunchy musical themes of MORNING VIEW, it's almost hard to imagine that the album was written and recorded in the relaxed atmosphere of a California beach house. Drummer Jose Pasillas offers tasty percussive coloring in the breakout single, "Wish You Were Here." The song's trippy verses set against its heavily strummed choruses fits the profile of push-and-pull dynamics that Incubus fans have come to expect. "11am" touches on regret and indecision with some neo-Eastern flavor and Mike Patton-inspired vocalizing by frontman Brandon Boyd. "Float" borrows from traditional Asian music and shows the band's near-fearless spirit of experimentation. MORNING VIEW's most eccentric track is the crafted epic "Just A Phase," whose quirky time signature changes and adventurous arrangement show that Incubus has a great deal more to offer than strategically placed turntable scratches.
With strong songwriting and instrumentation Morning View
is a mature album following the sophomore effort of Make Yourself.
Includes a bonus DVD disc.
Recorded at Stern House Studios, Malibu, California.

| | Hoobastank CD (2001)
Jimmy Eat World CD music
$12.05 With opening gigs for the newly famous (Alien Ant Farm, Incubus) and the firmly established (Live), Hoobastank have had the envious opportunity to generate buzz and anticipation for their self-titled major label debut. Don't be put off by the goofy name; while it might be overtly campy, it's certainly original and makes for a catchy logo, cleverly incorporating Wallis' famous symbol for infinity. HOOBASTANK boasts palatable, hook-laden hard rock in the spirit of bands such as Papa Roach and 311. The band keeps it simple with guitar/bass/drum/vocals, seeing no need to add pretentious strings or synthesizers to their stage-ready sound.
As for their songs, a connecting thread of broken relationships (both romantic and otherwise) permeates the lyrics, especially "Give It Back" and "Running Away." The soft then heavy "Up And Gone" speaks to innocence lost, while the ballad-worthy "To Be With You" offers a glimmer of hope in the predominant darkness and confusion. Musically, HOOBASTANK embodies all the elements of the post grunge scene. "Pieces" has rap metal verses coupled with dissonant tritone riffing which breaks away to piles of vocal harmonies in the choruses. The song that truly defines the Hoobastank sound is the aggro-pop anthem "Crawling In The Dark," a single that will have hard rock fans clamoring for this CD.
Recorded at 4th Street Recording, Santa Monica, California and Village Recorder, Los Angeles, California.
Hoobastank: Doug Robb (vocals); Dan Estrin (guitar); Markuu Lappalainen (bass); Chris Hesse (drums).
Additional personnel: Jim Wirt (piano).
| | Jimmy Eat World Futures CDs (2004) Deluxe Edition
Jimmy Eat World music CDs
$16.09 This Deluxe Edition includes a bonus disc of the band's original demos for the FUTURES album. Also included are extended liner notes and band commentary, as well as an auto-link to a secret site loaded with extras and exclusives.
After firmly establishing itself in the hearts and minds of rock fans through numerous EPs and two albums of angst-fueled power-pop, Jimmy Eat World scored a big hit single with "The Middle," from the excellent BLEED AMERICAN (re-christened JIMMY EAT WORLD in the wake of 9/11). The mainstream had finally caught up with Jimmy Eat World.
FUTURES, the ensemble's first album following its breakthrough, doesn't stray from the formula that has worked so well for the Arizona band. Jim Adkins's vocals are quietly insistent, and at times fiery, conveying reflective, intelligent lyrics that complement intricate melodies. Like its immediate predecessor, FUTURES opens with a politically minded title track ("I hope for better in November"), but, in general, the songs mostly revolve around love and longing. "Work" and "Pain" are filled with heart-on-the-sleeve emotions, and Jimmy Eat World makes these tunes work with undeniable sincerity. With many sharp, catchy songs on display, FUTURES is another outstanding record from Jimmy Eat World.

| | And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead Madonna CD (1999)
Jimmy Eat World CD music
$12.09 And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead: Kevin, Conrad, Neil, Jason.
On 1999's MADONNA, the Austin, Texas-based noise-rock ensemble And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead further hones its sharp sonic attack. As the group's first and only outing for the Merge label (recorded before being picked up by Interscope), MADONNA sounds like a test run for Trail of Dead's lauded SOURCE CODES & TAGS, with caustic guitar squalls washing over propulsive rhythms, creating mountains of sound. "Mistakes and Regrets" surges forward like one of Sonic Youth's most rocked-out tunes, while "Mark David Chapman" evokes a more epic Fugazi with its simmering sense of urgency. In keeping with its unpredictable nature, the quartet also offers up the exotic, eastern-tinged mood piece "Children of the Hydra's Teeth" and the dreamy, ominous "Aged Dolls." Along with SOURCE CODES, this fierce, restless record is essential Trail of Dead listening.
Jimmy Burdine (horns); Steven Hall (drums).

| | Arbouretum Rites Of Uncovering CD (2007)
Jimmy Eat World CD music
$12.99 RITES OF UNCOVERING finds Baltimore, Maryland, trio Arbouretum eschewing the rigid structures of traditional folk and blues, but unearthing the droning soul at the root of the forms. The extraordinarily talented singer-songwriter Dave Heumann fronts the band with a voice that echoes both Skip Spence and Will Oldham and guitar chops that imagine Richard Thompson and Tony Iommi as being cut from the same cloth. This is a spectacular, impressive debut.
Arbouretum: David Heumann (vocals, various instruments); Walker Teret (various instruments).
