| | Blues: A Real Summit Meeting CD (2 Customer Reviews)
Besides the legendary B.B. King and Muddy Waters, a live Newport audience in New York hears some lesser lights such as Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson. Of historical interest, Big Mama Thornton, Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup, and Jay McShann offer renditions of their own songs that were covered for a much larger audience by Janis Joplin, Elvis Presley, and others. An unexpected delight is the electrified violin played by Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, who backs other performers here as well as taking the lead on two tunes. ~ Mark Allan

| | Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac CD (1968) Remastered
Blues: A Real Summit Meeting CD music
$9.95 PETER GREEN'S FLEETWOOD MAC, the band's full-length debut, is miles removed from commercially tailored soft rock of Fleetwood Mac's 1970s incarnation. The '60s version of the band, led by guitarist/singer Peter Green, was edgy, psychedelic, and rooted deeply in the blues. Green's love of revved-up 12-bar jams, raw boogie grooves, and shredding electric leads come together beautifully on this album, with the help of slide guitarist/singer/pianist Jeremy Spencer, drummer Mick Fleetwood, and bassist John McVie.
With the exception of Spencer, the members had played together in John Mayall's ...

Blues: A Real Summit Meeting CD music
$9.25 Despite its codification into our collective pop culture consciousness, Isaac Hayes' "Theme From Shaft" is a highly original composition. It's been remade by Hayes himself for the remade Shaft film, and appropriately kicks off this collection of tunes from the movie by some of R&B's New Jacks.
A diverse selection of artists encompass the collection, from lascivious soul stirrer R. Kelly to the rugged Latin hip-hop of Fulanito, along with many other noteworthy diversions that represent the many flavors of contemporary urban soul. Most of the material focuses on John Shaft's street smarts ...

| | Bukka White Mississippi Blues CD (1969)
Blues: A Real Summit Meeting songs
$13.29 In the true Takoma style of obscurity, there is not much information on this recording. Most of the back cover is taken up with a catalog listing, while the front cover photo is of a dried-up muddy riverbed, which actually looks like a blow-up of a small section of this artist's face. Bukka White is a name known to blues lovers since he was one of the group of early Delta blues recording artists that were rediscovered in the '60s. This album is one of the new recordings he made during this latter period. It is appropriate that White recorded a monologue at one point entitled "Mixed Water" for another label, because blues listeners tend to be mixed about this artist's output. The final analysis is usually in his favor, as he has a tremendously appealing voice, and while not a guitar virtuoso, he certainly creates an authentic Delta blues sound and keeps three or four rhythms that blues bar bands would die for. Sometimes listeners just expect too much from the man, such as a more extensive repertoire of styles or a more forceful guitar attack. Slide guitar and dobro playing have gone so far to the front and center in various types of music that some listeners are just used to hearing it that ...

| | Alec "Guitar Slim" Seward Back Porch Boys CD (2002) Import
Blues: A Real Summit Meeting songs
$13.05 The music on this compilation performed by Champion Jack Dupree was originally issued under the name Duke Bayou & His Mystic Six.
The name Guitar Slim has been used several times in the blues world. The most famous Guitar Slim was Eddie "Guitar Slim" Jones; others have included James "Guitar Slim" Stephenson, Norman "Guitar Slim" Green, and Rodney "Guitar Slim Jr." Armstrong (who is Eddie Jones' son). But the Guitar Slim who is heard on this CD is Alec "Guitar Slim" Seward, a Virginia native who was born on March 16, 1901, and died in New York (his adopted home) on May 11, 1972. When Seward formed a duo with the obscure Louis "Jelly Belly" Hayes (not to be confused with jazz drummer Louis Hayes) in the late '40s and early '50s, they were billed as the Back Porch Boys (or in some cases, the Blues Boys). Seward and Hayes had a lot in common -- both were country blues singers who played acoustic guitar, and both were natives of the South who had moved to the Big Apple. Seward and Hayes' 1947 duets for Apollo are the main focus of this CD, and one can see why they called themselves the Back Porch Boys -- their rugged, unapologetically raw recordings make one think of Southern bluesmen playing their acoustic guitars on the back porch. Not all of the songs on this collection ...
