(3 Customer Reviews)
It's hard to imagine how singer-songwriter par excellence John Hiatt manages to keep churning out album after album of carefully wrought, emotionally loaded material. It must be that Nashville-derived work ethic tempered by a touch of mad genius. Whatever Hiatt's secret, we can all rejoice in the fact that THE TIKI BAR IS OPEN offers another batch of fine songs, sung in that patented sandpaper-soul voice.
Hiatt's crack band, including guitar ace Sonny Landreth, chugs along spiritedly, supporting an amalgam of rock, country, blues, and R&B distinguished by Hiatt's plainspoken-but-trenchant lyrics. From the bluesy, violent scenarios presented in "I Know a Place" to the existential drinking song that is the title track, Hiatt is in fine form. To his credit, his inspiration doesn't flag towards the end of the album either. The last two songs are possibly the most impressive; "Come Home to You" is a touching troubled-relationship ballad that contains the sage line "there's no man so wicked he cannot come home, nor so good he passes each test." The closer "Farther Stars" is a genre-hopping affair that trails off with a long and surprisingly effective neo-psychedelic (!) jam on the order of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows." Just goes to show that you never know what to expect from a professional expectation-tweaker like Hiatt.

Tiki Bar Is Open
$15.65 The release of 2009's ENDGAME brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about which of the genre's "Big Four" -- Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth -- would prove to be the most resilient and consistently prolific over the next quarter century, the only sure-fire consensus would probably have been "well, anyone but Megadeth!" And yet, 12 studio albums and 150-plus songs later -- more than any of the other three have managed -- that's exactly what's come to pass. The group's second release for Roadrunner, whose title apparently refers to "coming full circle" rather than any sort of goodbye, finds the latest iteration of Megadeth-- debuting new guitarist Chris Broderick(ex-Nevermore, Jag Panzer)--working primarily within their technical thrash comfort zone (think PEACE SELLS through RUST IN PEACE), with only a few latter-day elements and ...

Tiki Bar Is Open
$23.69 Of all the bands to emerge from the early `90s grunge explosion, Pearl Jam was both the longest-lived and most consistently interesting. After several albums that found the group taking an increasingly experimental direction, the Seattle quintet returned to its straight-ahead hard rock roots with 2006's self-titled effort. In 2009 however, Pearl Jam surprised fans again with an album containing some of the unit's catchiest, poppiest songs ever. According to lead vocalist Eddie Vedder, most of the ...
