Progressive Trance, Vol. 7 album
$11.18 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about texture as it is about song.something perfectly appropriate for a make-out ...
| | Tom Petty Live Anthology CDs (2009)
Progressive Trance, Vol. 7 CD music
$19.34 It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-1985, Live Anthology almost overcompensates for the long wait by offering almost too much music, cherrypicking highlights from 1978 to 2007. In its simplest ...

| | Ghetto Fabolous CD (2001)
Progressive Trance, Vol. 7 songs
$6.49 From out of nowhere, Fabolous swooped onto the hip-hop scene in summer 2001 with this big-money debut album and a sure-fire hit ("Can't Deny It"). It also didn't hurt that Fabolous' rhymes happen to fit right in the with the zeitgeist of the moment, exhibiting somewhat of an East Coast variation of the bling bling style synonymous with Southern rap. Besides Jay-Z's occasional departure into materialism and/or hedonism à la "I Just Wanna ...
| | Best Of The Monkees CDs (2003) Remastered
Progressive Trance, Vol. 7 album
$10.29 Recorded between 1966 & 1968. Includes liner notes by Andrew Sandoval.
This is as fine a job as anyone could look for in a single-disc Monkees career summary. Over the course of this generous 25-song disc, all of the Monkees numerous hits are included ("Last Train to Clarksville," "Daydream Believer," etc.), but perhaps more significantly, many lesser-known songs of equal quality can be heard. While the Monkees' many unforgettable hits were generally written by great pop composers of the day like Neil Diamond ("I'm a Believer"), Gerry Goffin & Carole King ("Pleasant Valley Sunday"), and the team of Boyce & Hart (damn near everything else), that's not the whole story.
Though the Monkees were criticized for being merely actors playing a band, Mike Nesmith was in fact a superb songwriter. He's represented by several songs here (the garagey "Mary Mary," the expansive "The Girl I Knew Somewhere," et al), and went on to release some of the best country-rock albums ever made. And though most of the playing on Monkees tracks was done by L.A. studio musicians, the blend of British-Invasion ...

| | Ozric Tentacles Spirals In Hyperspace CD (2004)
Progressive Trance, Vol. 7 music CDs
$13.69 Spirals in Hyperspace completes the movement initiated since Ozric Tentacles' comeback: the group is now the sole creature of Ed Wynne, who handles guitar, keyboards, and beat programming. Old travelers like Seaweed, John Egan, Schoo, and even Steve Hillage lend a hand on two or three cuts each, but the group has definitely moved from a fierce live unit to a more clinical studio project -- and it can be heard on this album. The sleek production doesn't hide a high level of predictability and a certain coldness in the execution. Still, Spirals in Hyperspace is a good late-vintage Ozric opus. In fact, anyone would refute all of the above upon listening to the hard-driving opener, "Chewier": fast-paced and exciting, it sounds like something ...
| | Bobby Darin Aces Back To Back CD (2004) With DVD
Progressive Trance, Vol. 7 songs
$17.09 Includes bonus DVD featuring performances and documentary footage.
Filling out the CD are some marginal odds and ends, including three folky tunes from a 1971 live album; a couple of inessential folk-rock-pop songs from rare late-'60s releases on Darin's own Direction label; a studio demo of "Dream Lover"; and a few standards with trad jazz backing that he did on a radio series for the American Dairy Association. It's wholly in keeping, however, with the character of a release that pastes together scraps from Darin's whole career, none of which stand with his most enduring work. ~ Richie Unterberger
Aimed toward the hardcore rather than the average Bobby Darin fan, this unusual package features one music CD with 20 rare performances, and a separate bonus DVD with footage from early-'70s television and excerpts of an unissued early-'60s documentary Darin was making about his own life. Given the obvious effort that went into finding and repackaging this material, it's surprising that nowhere on the sleeve or in the 24-page booklet does it say when and where any of this was recorded (or filmed). More important, neither the music nor the visuals are among Darin's more notable endeavors, though they might hold some interest for major followers of the singer. Piecing together some clues as to the sources, it can be said that the first seven songs on the CD are the audio-only portion of the first seven songs shown on the DVD, all of them from Darin's early-'70s ...
