Politically controversial in their time, Brand Nubian doesn't sound like the dangerous, Afrocentric militants they were originally made out to be in some quarters. Maybe it's because their jazzy, post-Native Tongues music is so ingratiating; maybe it's because Grand Puba has such a playful, easygoing presence on the mic; maybe it's just that, in the new millennium, politics are no longer the way rap groups ruffle feathers. Whatever the case, Rhino's The Very Best of Brand Nubian is an essential summation of the uncompromisingly pro-black, often very positive group's career. Grand Puba, clearly their most inventive lyricist, departed after their excellent debut, One for All, and was definitely missed on subsequent albums. So instead of trying to balance the picture, the compilation wisely leans heavily on One for All, from whence come seven of the 16 tracks (eight if you count the Pete Rock remix of "Slow Down"). We also get two Grand Puba solo singles and one track from the group's latter-day reunion with Puba, "Don't Let It Go to Your Head." That leaves three tracks from In God We Trust, just one from the coolly received Everything Is Everything, and another hard-to-find remix (of "Punks Jump up to Get Beat Down"). One could make the case that "Step to the Rear" and "Who Can Get Busy Like This Man" should also have made the cut from the debut, instead of the two remixes, but then again, there had to be a decent reason to buy this comp, even if all the post-One for All material included here is worth rescuing. As for the group's politics, the "white devil" fixation on "Drop the Bomb" and "Wake Up (Reprise in the Sunshine)" can sound paranoid to non-believers. But really, it shouldn't detract from the group's numerous strengths, which make The Very Best of Brand Nubian an extremely high-quality listen. ~ Steve Huey

Very Best Of Brand Nubian album
$12.99 This is the defining album of East Coast crime rap, which was largely established by the Brooklyn-based Boot Camp Clik of MCs. ENTA DA STAGE is a classic in its genre, featuring deep-in-the-crates beats by DJ Evil Dee (who continues to have a presence in New York's underground hip-hop scene), lurid street imagery delivered by MCs Buckshot ...

Very Best Of Brand Nubian CD music
$8.15 Diamond D had quietly provided some exciting production work and made strides within the rap music industry and community throughout the early '90s, but his name didn't become immediately recognizable until his classic guest appearance rapping on A Tribe Called Quest's "Show Business" ("Take it from Diamond/It's like mountain climbing/When it comes to rhyming/You gotta put your time in"), off their masterful second album, The Low End Theory. Even amid vintage verses by such lauded hip-hop company as Tribe's Q-Tip and Phife and Brand Nubian's Lord Jamar and Sadat X, something about Diamond D's forthright and rock-solid, but totally laid-back, style stood out. Hip-hop ...

Very Best Of Brand Nubian album
$11.65 Rhino/Elektra Traditions' 2001 release The Very Best of Das EFX is an excellent summary of the duo's seminal recordings for Elektra. When they came crashing out in 1992 with Dead Serious, the group was a bold change, thanks to their revolutionary quick-fire, stuttering delivery. The record was hailed as a mini-masterpiece, but like a lot of rap crews, what was praised upon the debut became ignored by the third, often because the once-fresh style now seemed stale, even if it was their signature sound. And, while the quality of their recordings did dip somewhat after the first album, they still turned out fine recordings, ...

Very Best Of Brand Nubian music CDs
$15.15 A separate duo even when their group Jodeci was dominating the R&B charts in the mid-'90s, Cedric and Joel Hailey are obviously comfortable in each other's musical company. And this empathy shows in the pair's 2002 offering EMOTIONAL, the follow-up to 2000's X. While there's no obvious standout track here, the album functions as a primer in soft soul stylings, with the multi-layered vocals and lush harmonies punctuated by the pair's occasional soulful rasps.
Love-man themes dominate, and with titles such as "This Very Moment," Love Me Carefully," and "Say Yes," the duo stake out their emotional terrain and navigate the sophisticated arrangements with assurance and aplomb. Although their days as a chart threat may be behind them, there's enough here to guarantee these smooth soul veterans a place in the hearts of a grateful boudoir-bound listening public. And like fine brandy, their vocals just get better with age.
Fourth studio album by the R&B duo contains the hit single 'This Very Moment' , partly produced by ...
