ABBA's third album, released in 1975, finds the group at the end of the first phase of their career. Having scored massive worldwide success with the bubblegum classics "Ring Ring" and "Waterloo" in the previous two years, the Swedish foursome continued that streak with the sweet "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do," the silly "Tropical Loveland" and "Bang-A-Boomerang." However, "Mamma Mia" and the grandly-titled "Intermezzo No. 1" showcased a new compositional maturity somewhat reminiscent of Brian Wilson's 1964 productions.
Several songs, including the brilliant, enormous hit "S.O.S." and the excellent "Hey Hey Helen" (covered by Lush 15 years later), contained the first inklings of the melancholy that would become such a fundamental part of their later albums. ABBA's self-titled album is the first key turning point of their long and exceptional career.

This is a great third release from the biggest band of all-time! Why "Hey Hey Helen" or "Tropical Loveland" weren't singles baffles me!

Great album!!! Many hits are on this release, in remastered form!, including "Mamma Mia", S.O.S", "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do", "Bang-A Boomerang" & "Rock Me". The rest of the cd is just as great. The best track in my opinion is "Hey Hey Helen".

This was ABBA's first album (in my opinion)where they were really starting to develope the signature "abba-sound". It's great! It's got some real gems on here like "Mamma Mia", "SOS", "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do", "Hey Hey Helen", & "Rock Me". It's really a fun album, but remains a bit weak standing next to their followup releases like 'Voulez-Vous', 'The Album', & 'The Visitors'.

Not quite the soundtrack to the Swedish foursome's film debut, ABBA: The Movie (directed by respected Swedish filmmaker Lasse Hallestrom), THE ALBUM combines several songs from the movie, including the deliriously bouncy hit "Take A Chance On Me" and the dramatic "The Name of the Game," with three songs from Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Anderson's never-completed musical The Girl with the Golden Hair.
These three songs are among the band's most intriguing, with "Thank You for the Music" serving as the band's unofficial theme song and "I Wonder (Departure)" one of their most affecting ballads. It's the near-violent, bitterly ironic "I'm A Marionette" that's the wild card. Easily the angriest song ABBA ever recorded, "I'm A Marionette" sounds in retrospect like a portent of the band's rancorous end less than four years later. Curiosities and all, THE ALBUM may be ABBA's creative highpoint.
ABBA's fifth album was a marked step forward for the group, having evolved out of Europop music into a world-class rock act over their previous two albums, they now proceeded to absorb and assimilate some of the influences around them, particularly the laid-back California sound of Fleetwood Mac (curiously, like ABBA, then a band with two couples at its center), as well as some of the attributes of progressive rock. That they did this without compromising their essential virtues as a pop ensemble makes this album seem even more extraordinary, though at the time nobody bothered to analyze it -- The Album was simply an incredibly popular release, yielding two British number one singles in "The Name of the Game" and "Take a Chance on Me" (which made the Top Five in America, their second-best showing after "Dancing Queen"), and achieving the quartet's highest-ever showing on the U.S. LP charts, reaching the Top 20 and selling a million copies in six months. 1979's VOULEZ-VOUZ, the Swedish foursome's sixth album, was probably their commercial pinnacle, as nearly half of the album's ten tracks became substantial hits. The discofied title track, the anthemic "I Have A Dream," Bjorn Ulvaeus' vocal showcase "Does Your Mother Know?" and the UNICEF benefit single "Chiquitita" were inescapable on AM radio in the waning days of the '70s. However, those tracks aren't the album's only merits, as the bittersweet "Angeleyes" and the downright spiteful "The King Has Lost His Crown" are among ABBA's best and most beloved songs. In 1979, ABBA were the biggest-selling band in popular music. The slick yet substantial VOULEZ-VOUS shows why this position was justified.

SUPER TROUPER is ABBA's seventh--and next to last--studio album, and one of their most artistically satisfying. The album's chart-topping singles include the propulsive title track, "Lay All Your Love On Me" and the bittersweet anthem "The Winner Takes It All," which many rank with "Dancing Queen" and "S.O.S." as one of the Swedish foursome's masterpieces. The rest of the album continues the more reflective, adult themes explored by its predecessors, VOULEZ-VOUZ and THE ALBUM. It's difficult to separate the downcast melancholy of songs like "Our Last Summer" and "The Way Old Friends Do"--recorded live at the same performance heard on ABBA LIVE in 1986--from the time period's gossip reports of the breakup of the band's two marriages. Even with such considerations aside, SUPER TROUPER is one of ABBA's finest releases.
Commercially, Super Trouper, ABBA's seventh album, was another worldwide blockbuster. "The Winner Takes It All," its lead-off single, released several months in advance of the album in most territories, was a smash; for example, it was the group's 14th consecutive Top Five hit in the U.K. and their eighth number one there. The title track was also a British chart-topper (their last), as was the album, their sixth. "Lay All Your Love on Me" made the U.K. Top Ten, and "On and on and On" was released as a single in some countries, hitting the Top Ten in Australia. (Typically, American success was more modest, though the album went gold, and "The Winner Takes It All" was a number one adult contemporary and Top Ten pop hit.) Musically, Super Trouper found ABBA, always trend-conscious, taking account of the passing of disco and returning to the pop/rock sound typical of their early albums. Only "Lay All Your Love on Me" employed a dance approach. The title song had the kind of martial beat and pop sound more in keeping with the group that

Widely considered the Swedish foursome's first classic album--and historically important as the first to use the now-famous mirror-B logo--1976's ARRIVAL contains three huge hit singles, the dramatic "Money Money Money," the downcast "Knowing Me, Knowing You" and quite possibly the band's finest four minutes, the absolutely perfect pop classic "Dancing Queen," a combination of Spectorian grandeur, McCartneyesque melody and the indescribable vocals of Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. The rest of ABBA's fourth album is strikingly consistent and accomplished, opening with the sly, bouncy "When I Kissed the Teacher" and closing with the atmospheric title track, making room in between for the three excellent singles and five other substantial pop tunes. Although three LPs and a greatest-hits compilation preceded it, ARRIVAL is aptly titled, as this album announces the band's move beyond bubblegum.

From he muted sleeve of Abba's eighth and last album, with its pained front photo of the four bandmembers studiously avoiding one another's gaze in a darkened room, it's clear that 1981's THE VISITORS is a somber record. The disturbingly confessional minor-key masterpieces within, such as "When All Is Said and Done" and "Like An Angel Passing Through My Room," as well as the bizarre, paranoid title track, contribute to the feeling of darkness and alienation. Recorded as the band was imploding amidst romantic breakups, THE VISITORS has the beauty and melancholy of earlier ABBA albums, but only on the transcendently mournful single "One of Us" does the band reach the ecstatic heights of previous singles. Regardless, THE VISITORS stands as one of the band's strongest and most consistent albums.

Folks familiar with ABBA's singles from their five-year stranglehold on AM radio in the late-'70s may be surprised by this, the Swedish foursome's 1973 debut. Not only is the title track--a runner-up in the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest--the only tune that ever shows up on the group's many anthologies, the other 11 songs show only traces of the compositional maturity, lyrical depth and production flourishes that make ABBA's later work so intoxicating.
Instead, RING RING is a sterling example of early-'70s bubblegum, not really that different from the Partridge Family or Andy Kim. Most surprising may be how many of the songs feature the lead vocals of Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson in addition to (and, in some cases, instead of) Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Faltskog. Whoever is singing, songs like "She's My Kind of Girl" and "Love Isn't Easy" make RING RING a package of pure, chewy pop confections.

The 14th, and penultimate, edition of Rhino's Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the 80's series glides by not on the series' reputation, but on its own momentum. At this point, the series is concentrating on MTV hits and other songs that gained popularity after new wave broke big. That could mean Murray Head's "One Night in Bangkok," taken from Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus' rock musical, Chess, or it could mean Mitch Easter's pop underground classic, "Every Word Means No." Some of the songs don't feel right in this context -- Corey Hart's "Sunglasses at Night" seems too mainstream, the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "True Men Don't Kill Coyotes" seems too post-new wave -- but much of this works and, while there aren't many classics (apart from the aforementioned tunes, there's Til Tuesday's "Voices Carry," Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy," and After the Fire's fantastic "Der Kommisar"), it's still a good choice for new wave fanatics (who may be the only people paying attention by Vol. 14, anyway). ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

As with other releases in this series, BR Music stretches matters a bit to fill two CDs with single tracks by the Walker Brothers, reaching out to various international discographies, and to the Walkers' solo stuff to come up with the 45 songs -- so this is a chance to take in the John Walker solo renditions of songs such as "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" and "Kentucky Woman," and Gary Walker & the Rain's version of "Spooky." Forty-five songs may seem like overkill on the American side of the Atlantic for an act like the Walkers, who never really had that much impact. On the other hand, the Walker Brothers, either as a trio or as solo artists, were primarily a singles act (the trio only released six original albums across the 13 years of their history), so singles are the way to go in terms of an overview of their work. The latter extends to their mid-'70s reunion, making this double CD the most comprehensive look at the three singers' work. The audio quality is excellent and by advancing across the A- and B-sides, one gets a somewhat wider picture of their work and their sound than a hits compilation would offer. ~ Bruce Eder
Dutch only compilation featuring both the Billboard chart hits and numerous UK hits for the British Invasion pop trio that formed in L.A. The members of the group were Scott Engel on lead vocals and bass guitar, John Maus on guitar and vocals, and drummer Gary Leeds. They came together in Los Angeles in 1964 and formed the group. While their biggest hits were covers of songs by American pop songwriting teams like Bacharach-David and Mann-Weil, Scott (and occasionally John Walker) could write brooding originals in a more personal, less overblown style when given the chance. Tracks include, 'Make It Easy On Yourself', 'My Ship Is Coming', 'The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore', '(Baby) You Don't Have To Tell Me', 'Another Tear Falls' along with a host of rarities. ANTIDOTE is the first volume in a series; it contains remixes of tracks included on Billy Martin's breakbeat LP GROOVE BANG & JIVE AROUND.
Whatever you think of this twin-CD release, it establishes that old ways of making music are morphing, if not disappearing altogether. It all started with Illy B Eats, a vinyl-only collection of breakbeats released by Martin in 2001 and included with Drop the Needle as a second CD. Each copy included a note that invited the buyer to lay other music on top of the rhythm bed and send it back for review. Martin received more than 100 replies from which he blended, pureed, mashed, and otherwise assembled these tracks. Each contributor had something unique to say; certainly you can hear the differences, in vision as well as competence, between Miho Hatori's amateurish, flat vocals on "Double Game" and the manic genre-jumping on Sex With Robots' treatment of "Moderndicksealand," which spins crazily from a flea-market Celtic hoedown through a mutant Mexican episode and into several directions after that. Spacefuzz turns "Out of Your Mind" into a Fripp-like acid house meditation, while Martin's bandmate, John Medeski, anchors "Sleeptalker" with old-fashioned hot blues keyboard licks. Some contributors deconstruct with imagination; others sing or jam along. Yet for all the evident variety, what surprises most is how smoothly everything flows. Removing barriers to listener input leads to a paradoxical homogeneity in the product -- a point made clear by the fact that the most distinctive cut, "Sun Flower," had the most apparent reference (a sampled John Fahey performance) and fewer elves (Martin alone) tinkering away than anything else on the album. Viral creativity, like sequential novels written a chapter at a time by sequence of authors, erodes the mark of any single individual. In this sense, Drop the Needle is, depending on your point of view, a techno-populist celebration or an elegy for dehumanized times. ~ Robert L. Doerschuk

On Divina Lluz (Divine Light), Mus searches for something more organic in origin, leaving behind the soothing combination of trip-hop and ambient pop that created a dreamy atmosphere on its debut, Fai. The Spanish duo (Fran Gayo and Monica Vacas) instead drape their somber pieces in piano, guitar, and bass. With Vacas' soft vocals (sung in Asturian, a language spoken in northwest Spain) remaining as the one constant for Mus, the shift in instrumentation doesn't effect the mood too much. Vacas gives Divina Lluz a sensual appeal, like she's singing in a darkly lit lounge in a David Lynch film. The lyrics, however, reveal that the songs are actually quite dreary. "I began to walk with a shard of glass wedged in my soul," she sings in "Escuela Cruda" ("Crude School") and "always alone, I always find myself bored/crying my entire life under a green olive tree" in "Sola" ("Alone"). It's depressing, yes, but fortunately few listeners will understand the language and just be comforted by her voice. ~ Kenyon Hopkin
