For an artist of Sinatra's stature, an artistic peak is a thing of no uncertain majesty. Such a peak was reached on ONLY THE LONELY, with the invaluable assistant of arranger Nelson Riddle. Foreshadowed by the glorious sob-fest of IN THE WEE SMALL HOURS, this album is a case of serendipity, where songs, arrangement and performance all combine for an unrelenting dose of heartbreak.
The ominous, film-noirish flatted-fifths of "Angel Eyes" set the scene for a cuckold's tale, which ends with Sinatra's evanescently graceful bow-out, "'Scuse me while I disappear." The timeless "One For My Baby," one of the songs ...
| | Count Basie At Newport CD (1957) Bonus Tracks; Reissue; Remastered; Deluxe Edition
After Mozart
$12.65 Originally released on Verve (6024). Includes liner notes by Richard Sudhalter.
By the time of this 1957 recording, the Basie band was enjoying something of a renaissance, and the appreciation of the audience for this legendary musician helps make this live recording all the warmer. This was a special night for the band, as it represented a coming together of the contemporary Basie assemblage with some of the original Kansas City veterans. Entrepeneur John Hammond, who helped bring Basie to national attention in the '30s, warmly introduces the band one by one, stressing the importance of each member.
Thad Jones, Frank Foster and company lay down a solid version of "Swingin' At Newport," after which they are joined by one after another of Basie's old Kansas City cohorts. From Lester Young to Jimmy Rushing, the stage soon becomes flooded with KC royalty, as old meets new with glorious results. Clearly, this evening at Newport ...

| | John Adams Road Movies CD (2004)
After Mozart
$14.09 This album was nominated for the 2005 Grammy Award for "Best Chamber Music Performance."
ROAD MOVIES offers a portrait of acclaimed composer John Adams at different stages of his career and working in a medium he's not generally associated with. His best-known compositions are musical statements made on a grand scale. The pieces selected for this disc were written for one or two instruments, but by no means are they "small" works--there's plenty of the Adams style and substance. 'China Gates' and 'Phrygian Gates,' both for solo piano, date back to the very beginning of his professional life in 1977. They bear the mark of youthful exuberance and are excellent examples of his compositional language in the early stages of development.
The later ...
