(2 Customer Reviews)
Although Smokey Robinson was clearly at the top of his game when he was with the Miracles, and one could make an outstanding anthology simply of songs he wrote and produced for other artists in the '60s -- his solo career in the '70s and '80s was also fairly impressive. THE SOLO ANTHOLOGY, a double-disc compilation stuffed with 32 tracks of unceasing quality, is a perfect overview of an often underrated era of Robinson's career. Although all of Robinson's 10 solo hit singles, from 1974's "Baby Come Close" to 1987's "One Heartbeat," are present and accounted for, the collection also dips further into his career for gems like his funky duet with Rick James, "Ebony Eyes." Gorgeous ballads like "Cruisin'" and the slinky "Being With You" still sound terrific decades later, as does his career high point "Quiet Storm," possibly the only song to get an entire subgenre of music (bedroom-eyed R&B love jams of the '80s) named after it. A good Miracles anthology is essential, of course, but THE SOLO ANTHOLOGY is equally necessary.

Solo Anthology album
$10.45 "Here In Angola," "Pandora," and "Indian Summer" were originally released on the LP INDIAN SUMMER.
24 CARROTS is folk-rocker Al Stewart's 1980 album, recorded with Shot in the Dark. This reissue features five bonus tracks, "Here in Angola", "Indian Summer", "Pandora", "Delia's Gone", and "Princess Olivia".
The pun of the title of 24 Carrots -- the first overt signal of humor Al Stewart has displayed in years, possibly ever -- illustrates that a lot has changed since 1978's Time Passages. The loosening of his wit is perhaps the most evident, but the most significant is the departure of producer Alan Parsons, who collaborated with Stewart on his mid-'70s triptych of masterpieces. In truth, 24 Carrots isn't far removed from those high points, because he is indeed still writing at a remarkably consistent pace. No, this ...

$15.65 Rock's original gold dust woman capped a return to the road in the '00s with this stunningly on-point live collection--her first. With tracks taken from a live set in Chicago in October 2007 and later bolstered by overdubs from a Nashville session (essentially studio strings and backing vocals), THE SOUNDSTAGE SESSIONS matches the energy of a hot live set with pristine studio touches. ...
| | Doors Soft Parade CD (1969) Gold; Remastered
Solo Anthology album
$20.29 Dismissed by the benighted as the Doors' "pop album," SOFT PARADE is one of the band's most adventurous recordings, utilizing strings and horns without resorting to schlocky over-production and moving far beyond their blues roots. Morrison was fully into his shaman phase by 1969, and his obsession with that image is reflected in the proselytizing air of "Tell All the People," and of course "Shaman's Blues." The album's biggest hit "Touch Me," while easily the group's most radio-friendly offering, is a pop classic that ranks among the great '60s AM radio tunes. "Wild Child" is a brief return to the blues-rock of yore, but the title track is a sophisticated, extended piece that moves through several ...

Solo Anthology music CDs
$13.89 Award winning and two time Dove and Stellar Award nominated artist, composer, producer and choir director, Greg O'Quin, makes a triumphant return with the release of Clichés. Clichés is the first project since the release of Greg's phenomenal project, Conversation, which contained the anthem "I Told the Storm." Now Greg O'Quin 'N Noyze has joined the World Wide Gospel family to impact the Gospel music scene with a new praise. Clichés promises to be one of the most talked about project of the years because of its perfect mixture of contemporary, urban and traditional tracks along with its comedic interludes. The first single, "It Don't Make No Sense" is slammin'! The beats, the music and the lyrics will get you dancing in the pews. But the praise party doesn't stop there! There's ...

Solo Anthology CD music
$12.65 Following the departure of keyboard player Chris Bess, Southern Culture on the Skids have pared themselves back down to a three-piece on their eighth full-length album, Mojo Box. While it's not quite a return to the gloriously greasy stomp of such early classics as For Lovers Only and Ditch Diggin', there is a significantly lower "novelty" factor here than they have displayed since their move up to the big leagues with Dirt Track Date, and the relatively leaner sound agrees with them. While SCOTS are a good-time band if there ever was one, a "funny for the sake of funny" vibe was starting to sink into the band's sound, but Mojo Box finds Rick Miller's songwriting displaying a keener ...
