Concept Album From Madlib (Quasimoto,Lootpack)
Yesterdays New Quintet: Madlib, Monk Hughes, Joe McDuffrey, Malik Flavos, Otis Jackson Jr. Recorded at The Dump and at The Bomb Shelter, Los Angeles, California 2001. Includes liner notes by Dave Tompkins. Recording information: The Bomb Shelter, Los Angeles, CA (2001); The Dump (2001). Photographer: B+. Unknown Contributor Role: Ahmad Miller. Arranger: Madlib. Using jazz experimentation, education, and the unequivocal brilliance of his hip-hop creativity as a primary instrument, Madlib leads this record of paramount importance in the modern jazz and hip-hop worlds alike. Favoring swatches of lounge-heavy atmosphere and Fender Rhodes rivers to forever soulful infinity, big beats, and abstract soloing on everything from vibraphone to the turntable itself, Angles Without Edges is where music hoped to go by 2001. This is a hip-hop record made with jazz principles of improvisation, spacy cut-and-paste passages of drifting solos, and periods of vamping grooves that are layered handsomely with uncut breaks that build on top of themselves, eventually creating what may be the Bitches Brew of the new millennium. Released on the progressive and reputable Stones Throw label, also home to their Uno Esta 12" and Bomb Shelter 7", Angles is 19 tracks deep and doesn't stray in quality as the beats drum on. Highlights include the math jazzy "Julani," the soul eclipse in "Papa," and the outer space dub/samba in "Paladium." ~ Nic Kincaid

Mojo (Publisher) (2/02, p.100) - "...Starting from a hip hop beat-maker's perspective, Madlib has created a jazz album that oozes sampleable loops and breaks..." YNQ What I Expected & More I am a huge fan of Madlib, the man behind Yesterdays, Lootpack, & Best of all Quasimoto. This album upon first listen was good, but not that great, a little sloppy. But third & fourth time the songs really began to stick to my brain. The songs are jazz, kinda loose, big beats scattered throughout. Somewhat reminisant of the first Money Mark album, better than Co-Flows instrumental or Pete Rocks by far (because this album really is jazz, not some hip-hop album without lyrics. If you like organs, good production, loose flow, something easy on the ear & an artist not afraid to strech out his talent, I highly suggest.

$10.05 Enhanced pressing of this 2004 album by the Electronic/House/Dance outfit Faithless features two versions of 'Mass Destruction' as bonus tracks: P-Nut & Sister Bliss Mix and Enhanced Video. 16 tracks total. BMG. 2006.
U.K. edition. Not that it was a valid argument before, but with the release of No Roots you can't say "every Faithless album sounds the same" any longer. The 15 tracks are broken into two suites -- seven tracks each -- with a remix of "Mass Destruction" tacked onto the end. Both suites focus on love: love of people, love of humanity, love of peace. There's plenty of conviction, plenty of message, and very little for the club. Headphone-friendly, the album is the best showcase yet for Rollo and Sister Bliss (the musical half of Faithless), as the music (all in the key of C by the way) is stunning. Polished and purposeful, the tunes glide one to the next effortlessly, making this the most thought-out Faithless album yet. Mood is the thing and as a result only a few tracks -- "Mass Destruction," "I Want You More, Pt. 2," "Miss U Less, See U More" -- stand out on their own. But if the album isn't as powerful as one would have hoped, it's ...
