If you never caught their short-lived TV show, you'll probably be most familiar with Tenacious D through the appearance of singer Jack Black as the bile-spitting music geek in the film HIGH FIDELITY. The sarcastic humor Black employed in that movie is a clue to the sound of his duo Tenacious D. With his partner Kyle Gass, Black digs into various areas of rock mythology and skewers them in fine comedic style. Whether he's delivering a mock-metal ode to heavy metal hero Ronnie James Dio in the appropriately titled "Dio" or indulging in too-outrageous-to-be-crass single-entendre sexual humor on "Kielbasa," Black's humor is always spot-on. While his no-holds-barred approach may be too much for some, those with a taste for the tasteless will find unending laughter in this disc.
Additional personnel includes: David Grohl (guitar, drums, background vocals); Warren Fitzgerald, Ken Andrews (guitar); Woody Jackson (sitar); Andrew Gross (strings); Page McConnell (keyboards); Steve McDonald (bass); Alfredo Ortiz (percussion); John King (echoplex).

Rolling Stone (10/11/01, p.94) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "...An angel-dustrial bong-water brew of Styx, Rush and Triumph, with a dollop of Journey, Kansas, loads of Zep and Sabbath, and a pinch of Black Oak Arkansas...Not since Bob and Doug McKenzie have two jokers nailed the clod-metal aesthetic so accurately..." Entertainment Weekly (9/28/01, p.74) - "Hilarious, but no mere comedy record...attacking acoustic guitars with a metal band's intensity...They're profane, bursting with rage and lust, and they deliver more laughs than anyone since Richard Pryor..." - Rating: A CMJ (9/17/01, p.5) - "...Packed with big dopey guitars and lyrics that are so god-awful they're almost brilliant....rock cliches are in full effect..." Tenacious D album
$11.55 AENIMA was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Recording Package. "Aenima" won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
On its second full-length album, this hard-rocking quartet delivers 15 tracks of unrelenting aggression and focused intensity. Rather than overwhelm with huge sonic washes of guitar and booming drums, Tool employs a propulsive, snaky approach that makes use of undulating rhythms and clipped, percussive guitar riffs. Maynard James Keenan's vocals follow suit, opting for a heavily processed slow burn instead of the post-grunge bellow favored by so many hard-rock bands. Instead of flailing uncontrollably in all directions, the group's raw, energetic sound is tightly directed for maximum impact.
On songs like "Stinkfist," Keenan rails against injustice while the band churns mercilessly behind him. There is very little humor or light in Tool's worldview (except for song titles like "Hooker With A Penis"); these are songs of painstakingly articulated angst, and they are delivered in an earnest, deadpan manner. These fierce rockers are dead set on making their point, and make it they do, with all the bloodshed and carnage that entails.

| | Tool Lateralus CD (2001) (Import) Germany
Tenacious D music CDs
$11.49 "Schism" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
Approaching Tool's LATERALUS with a casual ear would be a careless endeavor, to say the least. The sheer magnitude of the musical and emotional textures is as heady as it is primal. Standing out as one of the defining traits of the Tool sound is Justin Chancellor's hauntingly melodic bass playing, which often launches into a role reversal with the mountainous guitar work of Adam Jones. The best examples of said phenomenon are found in "The Grudge" and "Reflection." Drummer Danny Carey slips easily into the pocket, fearlessly tackling odd time signatures and tasty percussion like few contemporary metal percussionists (best evidenced in "The Patient.") Lyrically, LATERALUS crawls through the cerebral catacombs of vocalist Maynard James Keenan, exploring themes such as the fallout from failed communication ("Schism") and clutching to past pain ...

| | Tenacious D The Pick of Destiny CD (2006)
Tenacious D album
$9.05 Seven years after their short-lived HBO TV series debuted, the hard-rock comedy duo of Jack Black and Kyle Gass (a.k.a. Tenacious D) finally starred in their own feature-length film, 2006's THE PICK OF DESTINY. This brazenly wacky album serves as both the movie's soundtrack and the follow-up to the band's cheeky '01 self-titled debut. As on the earlier outing, Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters/Nirvana) gets behind the drum kit for a number of songs, and rock icons Meatloaf and Ronnie James Dio also make guest appearances. The D's ridiculous, heavy-metal-loving sense of humor is on full display during the driving title track, while "Master Exploder" focuses on Black's considerable singing prowess. For fans of Jables and Kage, this is a welcome blessing from the gods of rock.

| | Johnny Thunders Belfast Rocks CD (1997) (Import) United Kingdom
Tenacious D CD music
$19.69 Part of Triple X Records' ongoing reissue series of Johnny Thunders live albums, BELFAST NIGHTS documents a ragged-but-right trio set recorded at Queen's University in Belfast, Ireland on October 27, 1984. Thunders, the ex-New York Dolls punk icon and former leader of the Heartbreakers, is backed by ex-Clash drummer Terry Chimes and relatively unknown bassist Keith Yon.
As always with solo Thunders shows, the fantastic and the wretched share the same space-often in the same song. That unevenness eventually becomes part of the charm. The 19-track set opens, as usual, with a muscular version of the surf classic "Pipeline" and careens through punk covers and New York Dolls and Heartbreakers classics like "Personality Crisis," "Chinese Rocks"-which the band attempts three times, and the immortal "You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory." This same concert was previously released on the Anagram label as BELFAST ROCKS.
An explosive live recording of the legendary New York Dolls' guitarist's show at the Queen's University's McMordie Hall in Belfast. This is far more than a collectable rarity featuring soaring versions of classic tracks like 'Chinese Rocks' & 'Pipeline' ...

$8.99 The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of PAGE ONE includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal.
Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Rudy Van Gelder (1998, Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey).
This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series.
The title PAGE ONE is fitting for this disc as it marks the beginning of the first chapter in the long career of tenor man Joe Henderson. And what a beginning it is; no less than Kenny Dorham, McCoy Tyner, Butch Warren, and Pete La Roca join the saxophonist for a stunning set that includes "Blue Bossa" and "Recorda Me," two works that would be forever associated with Henderson. Both are bossa novas that offer a hip alternative to the easy-listening Brazilian trend that would become popular with the masses. Henderson and Dorham ...

$4.45 | | Natacha Atlas Something Dangerous CD (2003)
Tenacious D album
$14.29 Natacha Atlas' Something Dangerous is a bit slicker than her last, lightening up the beats and sexy intensity of Ayeshteni for more radio-friendly pop electronics, occasional vocal harmonies reminiscent of Destiny's Child, and lots of guests. Not that you could tell from the first cut, the gorgeous "Adam's Lullaby," on which she's backed by a gently playing Prague Symphony Orchestra string section. After this peaceful opener, the pace picks up with the dancehall-style "Eye of the Duck," featuring fellow Transglobal Underground member Tuup. Then the title cut gets a little funky while Atlas trades off vocal duties with the rapping Princess Julianna. A little later, Atlas takes on "Man's World." While her voice is lovely for it, the cover doesn't quite recapture the magic of her last album's success with Jacques Brel's "Ne Me Quitte Pas" and Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You." The collaboration with Sinéad O'Connor, "Simple Heart," is a high point, and the album really hits its stride in the songs that follow, with especially good interaction between Atlas and Niara Scarlett on "Who's My Baby," before mellowing out into closing ambient cuts. ~ Joslyn Layne
This international star combines Middle Eastern music with dance, rap, drum n' bass, R&B, Hindi Pop, film music and French Chanson. Collaborators include Jah Wobble, English composer Joselyn Pook (creator of the Eyes Wide Shut score), Princess Julianna, Transglobal Underground's Tuup, Sinead O'Connor and more.
