Steve Coleman's second recording as a leader introduces his M-Base music in its prime. Essentially creative and avant-garde funk, the performances feature dense but coherent ensembles and crowded grooves. The altoist is teamed up with trumpeter Graham Haynes, Geri Allen (on synthesizer), guitarist Kelvyn Bell, electric bassist Kevin Bruce Harris, both Marvin "Smitty" Smith and Mark Johnson on drums and percussion, and the up and coming singer Cassandra Wilson. Not for everyone's taste, this frequently exciting set hints at a future that has not yet come. ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded at Systems Two, Brooklyn, New York in January 1986.

On The Edge Of Tomorrow songs
$38.59 The second volume in a series of four four-CD box sets, this installment of Leo Feigin's mammoth tribute to avant-garde jazz in the former Soviet Union pushes the listener into darker, stranger corners of new music. Once again, each disc is devoted to one particular artist or group, and all but the last 37 minutes of music on disc four was previously unreleased. Disc one features Vladimir Rezitsky and his Jazz Group Arkhangelsk, to whom the whole collection is dedicated. The two 38-minute pieces included were recorded in 1992 at ...

| | Nurse With Wound Homotopy To Marie CD (1982) Reissue; Digipak
On The Edge Of Tomorrow album
$14.75 Though Homotopy To Marie is the fifth album by Nurse with Wound, Steve Stapleton has said that he considers it the band's true debut because it's the first one he created by himself. Slowly created over the course of a full year's worth of studio sessions (Stapleton having booked one six-hour block per week for 52 weeks), Homotopy To Marie is no less unnerving and experimental than Nurse with Wound's previous albums, but it's far less chaotic. Stapleton created the album's five songs (four on the original LP; the 12-minute "Astral Dustbin Dirge," recorded during these sessions, was added to the CD editions) almost entirely through tape manipulation, artfully editing miles of audio tape into these lengthy dada-esque soundscapes. It may be more elegantly constructed, but it's just as difficult to penetrate. The opening track "I Cannot Feel You as the Dogs Are Laughing and I Am Blind" ...
