The Varese Sarabande reissue of the soundtrack to THE OMEN is a deluxe and expanded edition that includes seven new cues, 15 minutes of previously unavailable music, and crystalline, state-of-the-art sound. Jerry Goldsmith's score, for which he received an Academy Award, combines incidental scene-setting music, classic horror and suspense motifs (Bernard Herrmann's wild violins a la PSYCHO are a probable influence), and--most notably--forms of the requiem mass as they have been interpreted over the centuries. In fact, Goldsmith's use of choral voices and religious themes is so powerful throughout that the score plays like a contemporary black mass.
With the exception of the lush love theme heard in "The New Ambassador," the soundtrack is a harrowing listen. Bass instruments surge and churn, strings tremble and squeal in the high registers, and voices chant Latin phrases, building tensions (both musical and dramatic) to the point of panic. Even comparatively subdued selections, like "A Doctor, Please," are characterized by a deep uneasiness. Goldsmith's gripping musical depiction of darkness and evil made THE OMEN (and its soundtrack) a critical and commercial success.
Music composed by Jerry Goldsmith.

$16.45 Barbara Carroll is one of the pianists that only New York City grows. There has been a long line of these sophisticated, stylish, elegant producers of music including Buddy Weed, Cy Coleman, and Bobby Short holding court in some lounge or room at one of the more upscale hotels. Like Short, Carroll also sings, delivering the lyrics in a smoky, highly personalized torch song as on "Can't You Do a Friend a Favor?" But the piano is the instrument where she makes her major musical statements. Once a disciple of Bud Powell, who was uptown, ...
| | Great American Love Songs: The Romantic Standards Collection CD (2004)
Omen Soundtrack
$11.49 The love songs that closed out the 20th century tended to be a blinders-off, gritty assessment of the emotion, as if love were a competition or an exhausting (and sometimes ugly) long distance race. Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" comes immediately to mind, or the creepy undercurrent to Sting's "Every Move You Make," which raises obsessive paranoia to the level of art. Even the apparent joyous infectiousness of one of 2003's most popular songs, OutKast's "Hey Ya," actually explores the divisiveness of love and the difficulty in keeping two people together, even as its funky, bubbling rhythm pulls couples to the dancefloor. All of which makes this collection of love songs from America's golden age of melody so startling when you really listen in to what is being said. Love, instead of being a challenge, ...
