This trio has been most closely associated with its exploration of standards (the group is often referred to as Jarrett's "Standards Trio"). A 1987 US tour departed from that format, heading into the more free-form terrain all three musicians had embraced in the '60s. Those results were heard on the album CHANGELESS. 13 years later, the threesome threw away the songbook again, and this album, recorded live at the Royal Festival Hall in London, captures what transpired.
A celebratory spirit pulses through this 78-minute set, with exuberant interplay lighting fires at every turn. Drummer Jack DeJohnette is a marvel, pushing and prodding, and sustaining layered rhythm beds that are at once muscular and supple. In keeping with its usual identity, the trio brings things to a close with Edward Heyman and Victor Young's "When I Fall In Love." The sound quality, as always with ECM Records, is superb.
Recorded live at Royal Festival Hall, London, England on July 26 & 28, 2000.
Includes liner notes by Keith Jarrett.
Personnel: Keith Jarrett (piano); Gary Peacock (bass); Jack DeJohnette (drums).
Spin (1/02, p.109) - "...An excellent live, lyrical, churning, occasionally sorta almost swinging post/anti-Ken Burns defense of free jazz..." Q (11/01, p.122) - 4 out of 5 stars - "...It sounds like the start of a new era for the trio and won't do the cult of Jarrett any harm at all..." Down Beat (1/02, p.66) - 5 stars out of 5 - "...Spell-inducing..." Mojo (Publisher) (11/01, p.106) - "...Captures highlights of Keith Jarrett at the Royal Albert Hall rediscovering his 'free' playing..." Inside Out
$6.79 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized ...

| | Keith Jarrett Up For It CD (2003)
Inside Out
$14.49 "Butch & Butch" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo.
According to Keith Jarrett's ultimately uplifting liner notes, this live recording is one that very nearly did not happen. Apparently, it does not typically rain much or often in July on France's Cote d'Azur. However, in 2002, the sun did not shine for several days running there and the (outdoor) Festival de Jazz d'Antibes, not being accustomed to the uncooperative heavens, did not have a backup performance venue. On top of all of this, the members of this nearly legendary trio were all more or less recuperating from various illnesses, and feeling all the glummer for the rain. After an epiphany over an espresso backstage (read: the rainy, windswept beach), Jarrett convinced his colleagues that more or less, the show must go on. Besides he lobbied, "We need the therapy. We need the music."
Playing beneath plastic drop cloths on stage with little drips coming in here and there, the trio proceeded to play an inspired set of music, making it clear that the listeners, too, "need [this] music." Jarrett, Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette have been playing together for 20 years now and the fortuitous, compounded ...
| | Dave Holland Extended Play: Live At Birdland CDs (2003)
Inside Out
$21.15 EXTENDED PLAY was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album.
With a front line that features saxophone, trombone, and vibraphone/marimba, the Dave Holland Quintet features an immediately identifiable band sound. As for backing, bassist Holland and traps man Billy Kilson provide a push-me-pull-you, supple and responsive rhythm section that is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to accompaniment ideas.
The thing that separates the men from the boys in the world of jazz improvisation is listening--when the performers are paying close attention to one another, the creative horizons are all but limitless. It would be a slight to say this quintet is all on the same page, better ...
| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Inside Out
$12.89 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, ...
