Recorded live at Royal Festival Hall, London, England on July 26 & 28, 2000.
This trio has been most closely associated with its exploration of standards (the group is often referred to as Jarrett's "Standards Trio"). A 1987 US tour departed from that format, heading into the more free-form terrain all three musicians had embraced in the '60s. Those results were heard on the album CHANGELESS. 13 years later, the threesome threw away the songbook again, and this album, recorded live at the Royal Festival Hall in London, captures what transpired.
A celebratory spirit pulses through this 78-minute set, with exuberant interplay lighting fires at every turn. Drummer Jack DeJohnette is a marvel, pushing and prodding, and sustaining layered rhythm beds that are at once muscular and supple. In keeping with its usual identity, the trio brings things to a close with Edward Heyman and Victor Young's "When I Fall In Love." The sound quality, as always with ECM Records, is superb.

Inside Out album
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's ...
| | Keith Jarrett Always Let Me Go: Live In Tokyo CDs (2002)
Inside Out CD music
$22.29 Recorded live at Orchard Hall and Bunka Kaikan, Tokyo, Japan in April 2001.
Recorded live in Tokyo in April 2001, Always Let Me Go is Keith Jarrett's 149th concert in Japan. Joined by his long-standing partners Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette, these performances are playful, explosive, somber, and completely improvised. After 20 years of working together, they trust each other (and the audience) enough to deliver over two hours of unscripted music. DeJohnette prowls through his drums like a restless cougar: he chatters, scuffles, and pounces on the skins with agility. Likewise, Peacock spoons out a concrete foundation of bass; one that bubbles as it spreads through the cracks in Jarrett's 88 keys (which serve the pianist so very well). For listeners familiar with the trio's Inside Out CD, here is the same idea further elaborated on.
"Hearts in Space" spirals out of the starting gate with geometrical tremors, as three virtuosos all start their respective engines and read each other's pulses over the course of 32 minutes. The trio effortlessly glide from mood to mood in synchronization to deliver a ballad in the eye of a hurricane, then dismount into straight-ahead swing. "The River" is a stoic ...
| | Keith Jarrett Up For It CD (2003)
Inside Out music CDs
$14.49 Recorded live at Festival De Jazz d' Antibes, Juan Les Pins, France on July 16, 2002. Includes liner notes by Keith Jarrett.
"Butch & Butch" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo.
According to Keith Jarrett's ultimately uplifting liner notes, this live recording is one that very nearly did not happen. Apparently, it does not typically rain much or often in July on France's Cote d'Azur. However, in 2002, the sun did not shine for several days running there and the (outdoor) Festival de Jazz d'Antibes, not being accustomed to the uncooperative heavens, did not have a backup performance venue. On top of all of this, the members of this nearly legendary trio were all more or less recuperating from various illnesses, and feeling all the glummer for the rain. After an epiphany over an espresso backstage (read: the rainy, windswept beach), Jarrett convinced his colleagues that more or less, the show must go on. Besides he lobbied, "We need the therapy. We need the music."

| | Dave Holland Extended Play: Live At Birdland CDs (2003)
Inside Out songs
$21.15 EXTENDED PLAY was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album.
With a front line that features saxophone, trombone, and vibraphone/marimba, the Dave Holland Quintet features an immediately identifiable band sound. As for backing, bassist Holland and traps man Billy Kilson provide a push-me-pull-you, supple and responsive rhythm section that is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to accompaniment ideas.
The thing that separates the men from the boys in the world of jazz improvisation is listening--when the performers are paying close attention to one another, the creative horizons are all but limitless. It would be a slight to say this quintet is all on the same page, better to imagine they all bring their knowledge of great art and fine cuisine to ...
