B-Tribe--AKA multi-instrumentalist Claus Zundel--has been mesmerizing club-goers for years with an inventive blend of heavily reverbed Flamenco guitars and techno beats. On this 2001 release, B-Tribe takes a deep breath of inspired airàand exhales slowly. The mood is meditative, the textures and beats dreamy. A brooding take on Albinoni's "Adagio in G Minor" establishes the contemplative pace and tone of the album; the title track even echoes a key chord progression from the classical piece. The songs flow together seamlessly, with small variations in instrumentation to add flavor. Melancholy horns enrich "Sketches of Saint Antoni," while vaporous female vocals waft in and out of the mixes, suggesting spiritual apparitions.
The highpoint of the album is the traditional and oft-covered Irish ghost ballad "She Moves Through the Fair," given new life as a lush Enya-esque mini-opera. Some may find the opulent arrangements on SPIRITUAL SPIRITUAL a bit too distracting for meditation, but the album's bright and uplifting tone suits meditative movement--and lives up to the title.
Recorded in Ibiza, Spain and Miami, FLorida in 1999 & 2000.
Personnel includes: Susan Carol, Dave Jeffs (vocals); Paco Fernandez (guitar); Eric Plumettaz (strings); Mark Smith Jr. (trumpet, flugelhorn).

$9.29 The delirious "Intro" sets the stage for what's to come: murky synth washes are gently led into the sunshine by the sudden magisterial arrival of the flamenco guitar. The title track is a rousing instrumental that fuses techno with samplings of the Irish traditional ballad, "She Moved ...

$9.09 Brazilian diva Deborah Blando joins the tribe for their 1995 sophomore album, and the results certainly are smooth (or "suave" in Spanish), with the multi-instrumentalist Claus Zundel supplying the techno dance beats alongside some truly dashing passages of echo-laden flamenco guitar. Spiritual Spiritual
$6.79 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. $16.45 Intellectually satisfying music also swings like crazyCD REVIEWS Fred Stride's Forward Motion keeps the rhythm section and horns on their toesFred Stride Jazz OrchestraForward MotionCellar Live****If you ask a musician, a music student or a student's parent, you'll get a glowing opinion of Fred Stride. Unfortunately not many other people know about him.Composer, arranger and bandleader Stride has been something of a Western Canadian icon, putting generations of student musicians through their paces. And we're not talking basic exercises here; he writes charts that would challenge the most seasoned of professionals.Want proof? Check out Forward Motion, a collection of six original compositions (including the four-movement Machina: A Concerto for Jazz Orchestra) on which 22 professionals accept the challenge. The selections include Gently Swaying, a latin number in 7/4 time that cooks and features a great solo from tenor saxophonist Jon Bentley. A Few Shades Darker sounds like a film noir score written by someone outside the mainstream, with a touch of humour added by trumpeter Derry Byrne, who redefines the adjective "sassy." Oddly Enough is a rhythmic number where five members of the reeds section take up the clarinet. The closing concerto, like all the tracks here, keeps the rhythm section and horns on their toes with changes of tempo, odd time signatures and challenging voicings. And while the music has an intellectual quality, it swings like crazy. If you're unfamiliar with Fred Stride, this recording offers a great way to find out what he's all about.Mark Andrews, Vancouver Sun Fred Stride finds himself working in many forms of music - from jazz to pop to classical. Although he is principally known for his many compositions and arrangements for jazz ensemble, he has also written countless arrangements for various entertainers and performers for almost every musical setting, from chamber ensembles to big bands, concert bands, theatre orchestra and symphony orchestra. As well as his many jazz compositions, which are played by high school and university bands around the world, Fred has also been commissioned to write non-jazz works for the CBC Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, several Canadian ...
