| | Mixed Illusions CD
This is a remixed version of the original Soulstice CD "Illusion".
Featuring such groundbreaking artists as Atjazz, DJ Spinna, Miguel Migs, Fila Brazillia, Kevin Yost, Pepe Braddock, Landslide, and J Boogie, Om Records has come out with an excellent release of remixes. Mixed Illusions is a compilation of great mixes taken from Soulstice's initial 2001 release, Illusion. This is an excellent and lively recording that alternates between a downtempo disco vibe and a more lively club/dance kind of feel, with traces of chill-out and a more relaxed groove. The high points of this recording seem to be Atjazz's remix of "Colour" and DJ Spinna's remix of "The Reason," but it's Fila Brazillia's masterful remix and interpretation of "Wind" that truly highlights the recording. This is an excellent recording; Mixed Illusions definitely hits the mark, both in quality and in its collection of artists and tracks. ~ Matt Borghi

Mixed Illusions CD music
$10.35 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ Kaskade.
There aren't too many surprises on the third Sounds of Om mix album, this one compiled and mixed by Kaskade. However, this isn't necessarily something to complain about, particularly if you enjoyed the previous volume spun by Andy Caldwell. This mix features many of the same producers -- Caldwell, Rithma, Soulstice, West Magnetic, and Afro Mystik -- along with a few tracks each from Naked Music NYC and Johnny Fiasco -- the former an Om regular, the latter a longtime Chicago producer with an Om-style sound. And, if you're familiar with the Caldwell entry into the Sounds of Om series, you'll also recognize Soulstice's "Lovely," a beautiful and memorable song that appears here as well in "Johnny Fiasco's Lovely Vocal Mix." For those unfamiliar with the trademark Om sound, expect to hear nothing but deep house -- soulful ...

$25.09 The second in the series of "soulful deep house lounging" doesn't include a wealth of important, individualistic tracks, but many of the inclusions are fine: Jody Watley's languorous vocal on "Saturday Night Experience" begins the first disc with class and the Blaze remix of Ananda Project's "Breaking Down" keeps the focus on New York/New Jersey ...

| | T-Model Ford Pee Wee Get My Gun CD (1997)
Mixed Illusions music CDs
$12.59 With band members named T Model Ford (guitar, vocals, songs) and Spam (drums), the casual observer might mistake PEE WEE GET MY GUN for a Jon Spencer Blues Explosion-style re-appropriation of the blues. But this debut album is straight-up and stripped-down blues, Ford's guitar and Spam's drums joined only by occasional and unobtrusive piano and organ by Frank Frost.
Ford's voice is a deceptively simple instrument, equally capable of the controlled emotion of Delta blues pioneers like Son House or even Robert Johnson, and, when necessary, the squalling yowls of R.L. Burnside or even ...
| | Pete Rock Mecca & The Soul Brother CD (1992)
Mixed Illusions songs
$9.35 It would have been hard to match the artistic success of their debut EP on a full-length recording, but Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth did just that on Mecca and the Soul Brother, and they did so in the most unlikely way of all after the succinctness of All Souled Out -- by coming up with a sprawling, nearly 80-minute-long album on which not a single song or interlude is a throwaway or a superfluous piece. Granted, 80 minutes is a long stretch of time for sustained listening, but the music is completely worthy of that time, allowing the duo to stretch out in ways that their EP rendered impossible. Again, the primary star is Pete Rock's production acumen, and he ups the ante of rock-solid drums, steady cymbal beats, smooth-rolling bass, and fatback organ, not to mention his signature horn loops. C.L. Smooth is the perfect vocal match for the music. He is maybe one of the few MCs capable of rapping a fairly credible love song, as he does on "Lots of Lovin'." "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)," a tribute to friend and Heavy D. dancer Trouble T-Roy, who was accidentally killed, packs a poignant emotional weight, but it is Smooth's more direct and conscientious -- and frequently autobiographical -- side which ultimately carries the album lyrically. The songs are connected and the album is propelled forward by Rock's quick, soul-tight interludes; these ...
| | Link Sex Down CD (1998)
Mixed Illusions album
$8.15 Fusing hip-hop and soul, Link brings equal amounts of both to the street game. Those on top of their own game know that Link co-wrote the number one R&B hit "My Body" for LSG (Gerald Levert, Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill). Now poised for solo commercial success, Link delivers SEX DOWN, his debut release. Written by Link, Antoinette Roberson and producer/writer Darrell "Delite" Allamby, some of the tracks have a deep underground hip-hop texture, some are rooted in soul, while still others bring that jeep-trunk funk. "Whatcha Gone Do" hit big at urban radio, while "I Really Wanna Sex Your Body" has a sweet-soul vibe. Be sure not to miss the Gospel-tinged "Runaway." Link's lyrics are fundamentally about relationships, and SEX DOWN runs the gamut of emotions; from joy to sadness.
