Principally recorded at Petrax Studios, Hollola, Finland. Includes liner notes by Petri Silas and Eicca Toppinen.
Fans who remember Apocalyptica from its first two albums might have suspected that the four Finnish cellists would fade into obscurity after their stock of Metallica covers ran dry. Sure, the shtick worked well while it lasted, but the irony of classically trained cellists covering heavy metal will only hold listeners' attention for so long. This is why, on their third album, they've taken some risks. The ensemble has grown to feature a double bass, orchestral percussion, and distorted cellos. Plus, they stick strickly to their own songs, and, at a time when heavy metal has gone the way of dodo birds and disco, they've refused to abandon their roots. Cult, Apocalyptica's third album, is a meld of late-'80s melodramatic heavy metal and late-1800s romanticism. When it's all said and done, these Finns can flat out play. "Struggle" opens up with eerie insect noises and then pounces into a section that sounds eerily like Sepultura. Some of the harmonies on "Pray" are so cleverly placed they can be mistaken for a human voice for the first few notes. Every song is an epic, and every song is dark and heavy. It's not old school Metallica, but it is some of the most intelligent, original heavy metal being made today. ~ Kieran McCarthy

Cult album
$9.79 APOCALYPTICA PLAYS METALLICA BY FOUR CELLOS features instrumental cello arrangements of Metallica songs.
The premise of a cello-playing four piece (from Finland, no less) performing the music of Metallica may seem outrageous at first, but much of the metal gods' repertoire translates surprisingly well into this "classical" reading. And while Apocalyptica chooses to concentrate on more recent hits like "Enter Sandman," "Sad But True" and "Wherever I May Roam" for obvious commercial purposes, it is Metallica's earlier, more complex compositions, like "Master of Puppets," "Creeping Death," and "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," which actually work best in this scenario. The quartet's love and understanding of the music is the real key ...

Cult music CDs
$13.65 From classical cover band devoted exclusively to performing Metallica's symphony-friendly epics to all purpose string ensemble interpreters of other heavy metal bands' music for the cello, to composers of original material fit to mingle with even more metallic translations, Finland's Apocalyptica had come a long way in the span of their first three albums. And, naturally, there were bound to be further innovations lined up for the band's fourth opus, Reflections, which arrived in 2003 bearing not a single heavy metal cover, and introducing several unexpected innovations into Apocalyptica's m.o., to boot. Chief among these was the addition of a drummer behind the group (recently paired down from quartet to trio), and since Apocalyptica's virtuosos would hardly stand for anything short of brilliance for such an assignment, that percussionist wound up being none other than Slayer legend Dave Lombardo, on whose Grip Inc. albums, group leader Eicca Toppinen had conveniently performed as well. One of those rare rock drummers whose sound and style is instantly recognizable, Lombardo was more than up to the task, providing ...

Cult songs
$10.75 A listen to Apocalyptica's Apocalyptica brings with it the nagging urge to figure out where, exactly, the music fits. Certain moments -- entire tracks, even -- are given over to classical formality, and it is in those moments, steeped as they are in traditional loveliness, that a listener can come dangerously close to thinking he is hearing something lofty and important. He is not. Apocalyptica, the genre-splicing Finnish instrumental band that changed headbangers' perception of the cello, is not pretentious exactly, but its effect is the same as that of a rock band ...

Cult music CDs
$16.45 Big Blend indeed! The new release from Asheville’s Every Mother’s Dream boasts a variety seldom found in a folk rock release. Anyone who listens to this disc is sure to find something they can enjoy. “She Rides” kicks off the recording with a funk edge while the following track, “Steer”, takes more of a toe tapping country twist. As you make your way through the big blend of tunes, you’ll hear some jazz, swing, folk and even a hint of electronica in the concluding song “Observation Deck”. “Into the Sun”, a positive and empowering ode to broken women, and “Don’t Tell Me No” offer a refreshing stripped down sound amidst a full band sound. You can expect a love song or two, yes, but the themes in Big Blend range from daydreams to particle physics At least two things are consistent throughout this record – stirring vocal harmonies and well crafted songwriting. This duo, once just Jay Kaiser and Mandy Carter, has made some impressive choices in the musical company they keep. Jay brilliantly plays many of the instruments on Big Blend as its producer. However, it would not be the same shining success without drummer, Jeff Dewhirst and saxophone player, Aimee Sullivan. Jeff’s tasteful kit sound drives most tunes on the record, and Aimee lays down some spectacular solos on “She Rides” and “Attitude”. BAND BIO:Jay Kaiser and Mandy Carter have been making music as a pair since 2001. Jay, who was trained in classical guitar at the University of Illinois, moved to Asheville, NC to join a local rock band. Mandy was fresh on the Asheville singer songwriter scene, testing her new found talent in local showcases. Noticing the matching stickers on one another’s guitar cases, the two found musical common ground. It didn’t take long for Jay and Mandy to form a duo and begin performing their own brand ...
