As part of the Outkast posse, this 14-strong southern hip-hop collective is guaranteed a certain amount of attention, but on EVEN IN DARKNESS they show that they've got enough talent and individuality to transcend the attendant hype. Like Outkast, the Dungeon Family makes use of intensely funky production and loopy, good-natured, decidedly non-gangsta humor a la P-Funk. But this isn't just Outkast, Jr. at work; the combined talents of Big Boi, cult hero Cee-Lo, Backbone, and all the rest make this a distinctive effort. With an inventive production sensibility that bears echoes not just of Outkast and P-Funk, but even of Prince, and a truly collective approach wherein the whole is even greater than the already-impressive sum of its parts, EVEN IN DARKNESS is accessible but sophisticated, fun but substantive, and one of the hip-hop highlights of 2001.

Dungeon Family Just Can't Be Stopped The Dungeon Family is completely awesome for a few reasons: 1. they include the group OutKast, who are probably the best rap dueo; 2. The other MC's featured like the Cee-Lo, WitchDoctor, and T Mo are among the hottest rhymers; 3. The beats to their songs are incredible (Not quite Missy Elliot incredibe, but close); 4. The rhymes they all come up with our hot, no one would ever think of the stuff they do. The album is completely awesome, and if your a fan of OutKast go out and buy it you won't be sorry. 2nd Best Album of the Year!!! Music like you've never heard it before. This album is off the chains, literally. The beats are fresh and innovative and a lot the Dungeon Family flows very nicely over them. Dre (from Outkast of course) raps on only one verse (Trans DF Express), which is incredible and leaves glimours of hope for a solo album from him. This track is perhaps the best of the year. He provides the hook for two additional songs which are bananas! Big Boi provides five or so verses while Cee-Lo tears it up on about the same amount. The only downfall is some of the other members have weaker flows that are difficult to understand the lyrics. However, the beats to these songs overshadow these slight negatives. Crooked Booty is an uptempo banger with Dre on the hook. Follow The Light flows with a relaxingly fast pace. On and On is a "Red Velvet" esque song but exhibits its own uniqueness and prowess. Cool Cutta shows some potential on Forever Pimpin. Six Minutes is unbelievably dope, and is extremely bouncy. White Gutz is very nice as well with a surprisingly dope verse from Bubba Sparxxx. Rollin is a slow, but incredibly smooth track. The epic Excalibur has a hook that will give you shivers down your spine. If it weren't for Jay Z's Blueprint Dungeon Family's album would be hands down the best album of the year. Submitted by a reviewer (Vancouver, BC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
