Only Everything, David Sanborn's second album for Decca, feels like part two of his debut for the label, 2008's Here & Gone. That set was a tribute to Ray Charles and Hank Crawford -- the alto saxophonist who played with Charles in the '50s and early '60s, and influenced Sanborn tremendously. That set featured loads of vocals and tightly arranged tunes that were indicative of the performances of Charles' bands. Only Everything delves into more of that territory, but this time, Sanborn reflects more heavily on Crawford and David "Fathead" Newman, another legendary Charles ace from roughly the same period. The charts here allow for more soloing and offer a looser, more intimate, spontaneous feel. It contains only two vocal appearances: one by Joss Stone on a punchy "Let the Good Times Roll," and one by James Taylor in a unique interpretation of "Hallelujah I Love Her So." I'm New Here is a shock. It's a wallop filled with big nasty beats, a wide range of sonic atmospheres, and more -- sometimes unintentional -- autobiographical intimacy than we've heard from Gil Scott-Heron than ever before. Produced by XL Recordings head Richard Russell, I'm New Here is his first record in 16 years. It is a scant 28 minutes and doesn't need to be a second longer. It's unlike anything he's previously recorded, though there is metaphoric precedence in his earliest, largely spoken word albums. Its production pushes forcefully at the margins, and Scott-Heron embraces it without a hint of nostalgia. It opens with "On Coming from a Broken Home," the first of a two-part poem that bookends the album. Over a piano and a sampled string loop (from Kanye West's "Flashing Lights"), he reflects on his upbringing filled with strong female figures and an unconventional structure, with a startling epiphany at the end. The John Fedchock New York Big Band is an exception in the 21st century, a big band that has lasted for an extended period with nearly all of its original members. Back in 1989, trombonist John Fedchock recruited some of the most talented session players in New York City for his large ensemble, though they were relative unknowns at the time. Over a period of years and a number of recordings together, the band has turned into somewhat of an institution, thanks to both the outstanding musicianship and the leader's impressive charts. Fedchock reharmonized the standard "Embraceable You" while keeping it accessible, bringing new life to an old warhorse. Shifting John Coltrane's "Moment's Notice" into a Latin setting (with able assistance from Bobby Sanabria on timbales) is also a distinctive detour from typical arrangements.
