HAVING THE BLUES UNDER A EUROPEAN SKY is a collection of some very exciting live performances Williams gave in Europe in the early 70's-a decade after embarking on a solo career. Williams rose to fame as Count Basie's vocalist, and the first seven tracks (featuring small groups of varying personnel led by the wonderful pianist Ellis Larkins) show Williams' supreme artistry as a jazz singer. The arrangements are wide open and rich in vocal improvisation. Williams reunites with The Count Basie Orchestra on the last six tracks. These numbers find him in marvelous voice, at the top of his game, and still swinging his unique blend of sophisticated jazz blues at a time when most ears in the world were tuned to rock. If you're a Williams fan, you'll want to own these recordings.

In addition to having excellent cover art (an illustrated cityscape in which a giant saxophone--complete with windows, a doorway, and stoop--takes its place among the neighboring buildings), LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN is also a dynamic, unjustly overlooked jazz album. Prodigiously talented as an instrumentalist and composer, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe was one of the most innovative jazz musicians of the 1970s and '80s, and LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN, his Columbia Records debut, proves it.
Blythe's ability to marry the best of the genre's traditions (he is equally versed in swing, post-bop, and romantic styles) with his avant-garde leanings is evident here. "Odessa," for example, a modal exploration, begins melodically, yet pushes further into free-jazz territory as the tune progresses. The angular bop of the title track is offset by adventurous soloing and unique instrumentation (flute and tuba add to the sonic palette here, along with guitarist James "Blood" Ulmer and drummer Jack DeJohnette). Jackie Ryan is a talented jazz singer who has a strong, attractive voice and a subtle improvising style. On her third recording, she is heard in prime form interacting with the great tenor saxophonist Red Holloway (who is on five of the 14 selections) and some of Los Angeles' top musicians. The instrumentation changes from track to track with Ryan excelling on tender duets with harpist Carol Robbins ("You Are There") and guitarist Larry Koonse ("While We're Young"). She swings hard on "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To," puts plenty of feeling into "Besame Mucho" and sounds joyful on "I Just Found out About Love."
