Though she was already a star in the Latin pop world, Shakira broke through to the international mainstream in 1998 with DONDE ESTAN LOS LADRONES, followed up by a live UNPLUGGED album. Thus, her next studio effort, 2001's LAUNDRY SERVICE, played a pivotal role in the budding pop diva's career. Not one to disappoint, Shakira made LAUNDRY SERVICE a career milestone. As such, the album earned a 2002 reissue where it was accompanied by a bonus CD with a video and a live track, and also featured a remix of the smash "Whenever, Wherever" as well as a couple of alternate versions of other tracks from the album. In itself, LAUNDRY SERVICE as Shakira's countless fans have come to know and love it, is a brash, personality-filled mixture of Latin pop with distinctly Alanis-like angry-young-woman rock, along with a smattering of R&B and hip-hop production moves thrown in. It all adds up to perhaps the definitive-to-date release from this fetching young star.
"Te Aviso, Te Anuncio (Tango)" was nominated for the 2003 Latin Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.

Shakira Laundry Service Songs Laundry Service Music Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews One of my favorite foreign artists... I'm not the kind of guy who likes the mainstream music that plays day-in and day-out on Top-40 radio and VH1/MTV. Rather, I like the off-beat music that most people never hear enough to like.
That being said, Shakira has become one of the first major contemporary artists that's grabbed my attention - (and I don't mean by her stunning looks alone). With an ethnic blending of Colombian and North African Muslim heritages, Shakira delivers a powerful introduction album to the United States and the world.
"Laundry Service" delivers 13 tracks that feature many diverse music styles, from "Objection (Tango), which combines a terrific blend of classic tango accordion with a basic punk rock and hints of 60s surf guitar riffs, to the amazing combination of Arabic influence in "Eyes Like Yours," to influences of Shakira's native Colombia in "Que Me Quedes Tú" and "Te Dejo Madrid."
My favorite songs on this album, not surprisingly, are not the tracks heard on the radio, but those that deliver the true passion of Shakira's lyrics and style of delivery: tracks like "The One," "Poem to a Horse," "Eyes Like Yours," and the Spanish performance of "Suerte."
I don't fully understand the Spanish lyrics, but I find that the songs on the album sung in Spanish seem more passionate and deliver more of an emotional punch than the English versions. I recently acquired the video of "Ojos Asi" from South American television, and found the Spanish lyrics much more entertaining and mesmerizing than the version on the album.
For me, and I believe others, this album is an invitation to explore music from outside the halls of music labels in Hollywood, Miami and New York. If you find this review intriguing, and especially like the Arabic influence of "Eyes Like Yours," I recommend listening to an artist named Khaled, whose "N'Ssi N'Ssi" album features the terrific sound of Arabic lyrics set to a contemporary pop beat. Also, check out Deep Forest's "Music.Detected" album, with powerful lyrics and mesmerizing music. Submitted by invincible_irvine (Orange County, California) Was This Review Helpful? I like the music, just very stange sometimes. While eclectic, the album is inconsistant not only in its sound, but in in the quality of the material. Most albums are the same, but the wide variety of music styles on this one throws me off. Submitted by mkawick (Texas) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
