"Livin' On The Edge" won the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal, and was nominated for Best Rock Song; "Cryin'" was also nominated for Best Rock Song in 1994.
"Crazy" won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
By 1993, Aerosmith's comeback was in full swing, and GET A GRIP proves that, after soldiering on through drug problems and interpersonal tensions, the band wasn't about to let its new lease on life get away. Most of the material on GET A GRIP is a far cry from the band's celebrated '70s work, both structurally and in terms of production. But while the sound is a bit more panoramic, incorporating more keyboards and a grander, more pop-oriented approach, Steven Tyler and the boys have lost none of their fire here.
Tyler's voice may have changed a bit over the years, but what he's lost in sheer lung power he's gained in character, and on the power ballad "Crazy" (one of the biggest hits of the band's career), he demonstrates the passionate poignancy he's capable of. While there are more pop-friendly tunes here than on some of their earlier albums, GET A GRIP does not lack for sheer rocking energy. Songs such as "Livin' on the Edge" are fueled by Joe Perry's distinctive rock-god guitar work, and the Perry-Tyler songwriting team generates both musical sophistication and four-on-the-floor hard rock.

| | Ozzy Osbourne Ozzmosis CD (1995) Remastered
Get A Grip album
$7.59 Let us all be thankful that Ozzy's retirement didn't stick. It supposedly lasted for three days, after which he got bored and started working on this project. Heavy, riff-intensive tunes, progressive song structures and a little psychedelia give OZZMOSIS a definite Sabbath flavor. Ozzy must have been in touch with whatever inspired early classics like PARANOID and MASTERS OF REALITY. Witness the extremely chunky "Thunder Underground," which can stand up next to "Sweet Leaf" and "Symptom Of The Universe" as an archetype of hard rock. The trippy guitar in "Ghost Behind My Eyes" and "Denial" are not some young Ozzy-wannabe going for a retro sound--this man was there, "Planet Caravan"ing.
Still, this heavy metal daddy in touch with his roots is also hip to the genre's latest sound. OZZMOSIS has a live, up-front feeling, thanks to producer Michael Beinhorn (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden). Zakk Wylde's huge, raw guitar also plays a major role. He provides scorching solos, lush textures and juicy fills with a muscular tone and minimal effects--the perfect complements to Osbourne's songwriting.
But more important than the raging guitars and the big sound is attitude. Ozzy's spunk has indeed rejected retirement. His songs still spew biting commentary ...
| | Ann Hampton Callaway CD (1992)
Get A Grip CD music
$9.55 At first, she may remind you of Barbra Streisand, but only when Streisand's voice is still in first gear. Unlike Streisand, who soon takes off for the stratosphere, when Ann Hampton Callaway revs her voice up, she reveals a husky alto that occasionally bridges into the soprano range and that suggests, among female singers, Sarah Vaughan's plush tones, but, more than anyone else, the "velvet fog" sound of Mel Tormé. She emphasizes those jazz-pop antecedents by recording a collection mostly consisting of standards as her first album, with basically a piano-bass-drums backup. At times, notably on "I've Got the World on a String" and "All the Things You Are," the performances cross over into outright jazz; Callaway even mimics a trumpet to duet with trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater on the former. But she possesses a songwriter's concern with lyrics that belies the jazz connection and renews the emotional impact of songs like Irving Berlin's "How Deep Is the Ocean" and the Gershwins' "Our Love Is Here to Stay" (although she gets more out of lesser-known tunes like Burton Lane and Alan Jay Lerner's "Too Late Now" and Johnny Mandel and Paul Francis Webster's "A Time for Love.") Effective as that voice is, it is also highly considered; this daughter of a vocal coach is remembering her lessons and not quite letting go just yet. She opens the album ...
