Full DescriptionMick Jones was forced out of the Clash--going on to form the outstanding hip-hop/rock hybrid Big Audio Dynamite--and drummer Topper Headon was similarly exiled. Remaining Clashers Joe Strummer and Paul Simonon recruited Nick Sheppard, Pete Howard and Vince White in an attempt to keep the band alive and kicking.
The resulting CUT THE CRAP seems more attached to Strummer's eventual solo efforts than a real Clash album; despite Strummer's determined effort, in many ways the band seems to be a lonely shadow of its more volatile self. While the glorious, grating Stummer vocals enliven tracks like the reggae-tinged "This Is England" and the anthemic "Movers & Shakers," the absence of the more melodically inclined Jones is clearly noted. Although CUT THE CRAP features the Clash's usual, heady mix of politics and punk, it falls somewhat short of the band's outstanding classics THE CLASH and LONDON CALLING.
Remastered mid-price reissue of their final album, originally released in 1985. Featuring the classic 'This Is England'and as a bonus track, it's b-side, 'Do It Now'. 2000 release. Standard jewelcase.

Expanding on the excellent two-disc SAND IN THE VASELINE compilation, the three-CD/one-DVD Talking Heads box set, ONCE IN A LIFETIME, includes most of the former release, along with more than 20 additional tracks. Like the highly visual NYC art-rockers themselves, the collection, in both sound and design, is perversely smart and strangely beautiful.
Starting with the group's early days in the late 1970s, ONCE IN A LIFETIME features frantic, urban-themed tracks such as "Don't Worry about the Government" and "Pulled Up." From the city, the setting shifts to wider spaces on their breakthrough cover of Al Green's "Take Me to the River" and the rural twang of "The Big Country." The second disc sees the Heads hitting the zenith of their fruitful collaborations with Brian Eno, while frontman David Byrne reaches new levels of both lyricism and experimentation on the iconic title track. The third disc cherry-picks from the group's later years, including their most accessible songs ("And She Was," "Road to Nowhere," and "Wild Wild Life"), along with the previous unreleased outtake "In Asking Land." As a summation of the consistently inventive and restlessly energetic ensemble that was the Talking Heads, things don't get any better than ONCE IN A LIFETIME.

While most of his peers have long since abandoned their creative impulses and risk-taking for comfortable complacency, Pete Townshend still dares to fail. THE IRON MAN, a song cycle adapted from a children's book, is ambitious in its scope as well as in its cast of characters. It is notable for a reunion of sorts with former Who members Roger Daltrey and John Entwhistle (on "Fire" and "Dig," the latter of which finds Daltrey in fine vocal form), as well as cameo growling from blues legend John Lee Hooker (on the menacing "I Eat Heavy Metal" and the strangely wistful "Over the Top"), and bizarre shrieking from jazz great Nina Simone. Townshend himself turns a stirring performance or two, reaching a pinnacle on the affirming "All Shall be Well." Though THE IRON MAN is a slightly bumpy ride, its turbulence is a testament to Townshend's creative ambition.

With THE HEAD ON THE DOOR Robert Smith and the boys achieve a distinctively Cure-like pop sensibility. These 10 songs combine the dreary dreamscape that is Smith's mind with melodies that are about as catchy as Goth music gets (just try not clapping your hands to "Close to Me"). Included on the album are "In Between Days" and "A Night Like This," each a successful single, and each a staple of the Cure's live show.
Also noteworthy are the haunting lyrics of "The Blood" and "Kyoto Song," which Smith sings in his trademark high-pitched howl. Despite the gloom, this album represents perhaps the Cure's first real pop effort. It also represents a transition from the sparse instrumentation that characterizes the early Cure sound, to the fuller, more complex incarnation typical of the almost psychedelic soundscapes of later albums.
