Karaoke album
$9.58 The second Glee soundtrack throws a bone to the show's supporting characters, with Jenna Ushkowitz (the faux-stuttering Tina) singing her first solo and Amber Riley (Mercedes) receiving a larger chunk of airtime. Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison continue to steal the show, though; Morrison delivers one of the album's most inventive songs with a mash-up of "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "Young Girl," while Michele sings the absolute pants off of everything the producers give her. The album sometimes strays away from choral arrangements and focuses on individual actors, but it's hard not to sing along with a song like "Jump," where the cast replaces Eddie Van Halen's keyboard riff with bright choral harmonies. ~ Andrew Leahey
The second Glee soundtrack feels a bit rushed, arriving no less than four weeks after Vol. 1's release and featuring songs from half as many episodes. Returning fans will still find a lot to enjoy here, though, as Jenna Ushkowitz (the faux-stuttering Tina) gets her first solo and supporting characters Amber Riley (Mercedes) and Kevin McHale (Artie) enjoy a healthier chunk of airtime. Nevertheless, Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison continue to steal the show, with ...

| | Gov't Mule By A Thread CD (2009)
Karaoke music CDs
$11.89 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here - despite the fact that they don't stray far from what they do best. Warren Haynes and his guitar are, as usual, front and center, his guitar screaming, his big throaty growl hammering down lyrics like a Southern fire-and-brimstone preacher with earthshaking soul. The material on this set is tight; there is less jamming but Gordie Johnson's production and mixing equalize everything at ten, making it feel like the disc is recorded live.
The set opens with the pulsing bass throb of "Broke Down on the Brazos," just before Haynes and guest guitarist Billy Gibbons enter and let ...
| | Michael Jackson Bad CD (1987) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Special Edition
Karaoke songs
$7.59 Digitally remastered by Bernie Grundman (Bernie Grundman Mastering, Los Angeles, California).
Jackson's domination of the world record market continued following Thriller, although by comparison it was an almighty flop with only 12 million sales. As Pink Floyd and Dire Straits have proved, one album can go completely sales haywire without necessarily being any better. The title track and the gorgeous "Man In The Mirror" were substantial hits, but quality material such as "Dirty Diana" and "Liberian Girl" bolster a strong album. Jackson also seemed to have found the romance he seeks in "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" and "The Way You Make Me Feel." Regardless of his press, history clearly shows that he has made a lot of people very, very happy.

| | Kings Of Leon Only By The Night CD (2008)
Karaoke album
$8.99 With their raw, organic sound, Tennessee's Kings of Leon emerged in 2003 as Southern rock for the indie-garage set, sort of a Strokes for the South. While there were hints of a new direction on their third album, BECAUSE OF THE TIMES, its follow-up, ONLY BY THE NIGHT, follows through with a near-reinvention of the Kings' sound. ONLY BY THE NIGHT could be mistaken for avant-indie cult heroes the Liars on a Southern vacation, as post-punk angularity, distorto-funk bass lines, and clattering percussion ...

| | Blue Shade Witness CD (2003)
Karaoke music CDs
$7.75 On their eponymous debut, Chicago's Blue Shade Witness draws heavily on the wide open melodies and guitar-based dynamics of Brit-pop and the U.K. bands that followed it. It's a pretty painstaking facsimile, actually -- Joel Bennett's voice soars and breaks with startlingly proper amounts of melancholia and detachment, and the quartet's guitars rattle and surge meaningfully. "Stars Will Shine" is the obvious standout here: "In time I know that we'll be free/We'll kiss the sun with golden wings/And the stars will shine on me" -- it's hard not to picture thousands of Coldplay fans singing along with that bit of soft-focus abandon at the Carling Weekend. Of course, this is Blue Shade Witness in Chicago, not Chris Martin and co. at Reading. But the replication is so spot-on, it's hard not to like the latest model if you already loved the old one. "Way It's Meant to Be" is more of the same, alternating between the usual chugging chorus hook and a quiet, layered verse, while "Ever-Passing Moment" switches up the model by channeling straightforward modern rock (think Fuel). Ultimately, originality is a scarcity in the Blue Shade Witness playbook. But the quartet does borrow wisely, and it plays its cards well. ~ Johnny Loftus

| | Desperado Ace CD (2006)
Karaoke album
$13.69 Of all the projects Dee Snider has been involved in over the years, the one shrouded in the most mystery was undoubtedly Desperado. First mentioned in heavy metal magazines circa the late '80s, the group appeared to be a promising proposition, as it saw Snider team up with a pair of gentlemen renowned in the metal community -- ex-Ian Gillan and Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Bernie Tormé and ex-Iron Maiden drummer Clive Burr -- with bassist Marc Russell rounding out the quartet. The group had an album ready and raring to go (going as far as having a release date set for May of 1990, and an album title of Bloodied, But Unbowed), but at the 11th hour, the debut was shelved, and the group soon after went the way of the dodo. The album, now under its original title, Ace, has finally seen the light of day 16 years later via the Deadline/Cleopatra label. Upon hearing the music, it quickly becomes apparent that Snider made a conscious effort to eschew the anthemic rock of Twisted Sister in favor of more straight-ahead metal, as evidenced by such tracks as "Gone Bad" and "The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter." But it appears that Ace would have fit in more with the metal landscape a few years earlier than ...

| | Earth Bombs Mars CD (2008)
Karaoke music CDs
$16.45 Pigeonholers beware: Earth Bombs Mars is an enigma. This hard-to-classify group often is tagged with the jam-band moniker--but that's not half the story. Earth Bombs Mars (aka EBM) combines elements of America's roots music genres (rock, jazz, psychedelic, country/bluegrass) to conjure its unique improv-Americana sound. This adventuresome quartet with a penchant for improvisation truly shines in the live context. So it's only natural that EBM's self-titled debut developed organically in a live-studio recording environment.Rich Whiteley's distinctive voice breathes life into his five compositions, while his guitar work provides textural interplay for lead guitarist John Zias. A soulful, articulate improviser, Zias caught the attention of Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, ...
| | Marc Adler Labyrinth CD (2008)
Karaoke songs
$13.15 Labyrinth came about as the result of a Jazz Fellowship from the PA Council of the Arts. I used the recording as an opportunity to explore techniques and harmonic concepts I had been developing over the years. This was also an opportunity to record with musicians with whom I had never previously worked in addition to some with whom I knew for a number of years. Bob Meashey, trumpet – I’ve know and worked with Bob in various ensembles over the years; his solos are always lyrical and sensitive. Paul Gehman, bass & Dan Monaghan, drums – I’ve know these two exceptionally creative and solid players for over five years through various projects I would start - but not always finish! I wanted to give something back to them through this recording. Tony Miceli, vibes – I’ve known Tony off and on for many years but this was our first recording together – what a treat! Tony is an amazingly talented musician; an extremely hard worker meticulous in his effort to master the music before him. Tony Marino, bass & Erik Johnson, drums – these remarkable and extraordinary improvisers came to be part of this recording via Tony Miceli and I will be forever grateful – they were a pleasure to work with and always inspiring. Jim McFalls, trombone – what a talent! Ron Thomas (Lyonswaltz) told me about him and I was blown-away with his phenomenal level of playing. I’ve known Ron through gigs we’ve done and from concerts he has given – an exceptionally talented improviser and composer. Vince Trombetta was my professor of saxophone at what is now the University of the Arts in Philly and is presently quite successful in Los Angeles. I was rummaging through some old manuscript books and came across his brilliant tune Voodoo, which he had handwritten for me to study. I recalled how much I enjoyed the changes in the tune and decided to add it to the mix. The sextet of flute, trumpet and trombone works quite well so I decided to arrange ...
