| | Motley Crue Greatest Hits CD (2009)
Ritual music CDs
$11.49 It has the same name as the Crüe's 1998 compilation, along with 13 of the same tracks, but the 2009 Greatest Hits is a different beast than its predecessor, weighing in at 19 tracks instead of 17 and sequenced chronologically instead of the year-skipping hodgepodge of 1998. These are all improvements, as are ...
| | Devin Townsend Addicted CD (2009)
Ritual songs
$13.85 Devin Townsend's maniacal/wacky tendencies duel with his instinct for skull-crushing heaviness on ADDICTED, the second in a planned trilogy of albums he's put together since retiring his ultimate metal band, Strapping Young Lad, a few years back. Anneke van Giersbergen, formerly of the Gathering, is Townsend's vocal partner throughout much of the album, creating a Lacuna Coil-esque effect as he roars and she croons and the guitar riffs ride almost disco- and techno-like rhythms. "Bend It Like Bender" is a particularly weird blend of metal and Hi-NRG, something Rammstein might come up with after a weekend of carousing in Berlin's most flamboyant discos. Other tracks, like "Supercrush" and the mostly acoustic "Ih-Ah," offer a kind of anthemic ...

| | Nickelback All The Right Reasons CD (2005)
Ritual CD music
$15.39 As always, frontman Chad Kroeger's gritty voice remains Nickelback's calling card, and his emotive singing carries every tune, most notably the nostalgic "Photograph" and "Far Away," a tender, echo-laden ballad. Kroger has never met a guitar effect that he didn't like, as evidenced by the revved-up "Next Contestant," which relates the, ahem, difficulties of having a beautiful girlfriend. Though ALL THE RIGHT REASONS is slightly more eclectic than the group's past releases, it's unmistakably a Nickelback outing, and fans of the band are sure to be pleased.
On 2005's ALL THE RIGHT REASONS, the Canadian heavy-rock band Nickelback offers up more of its straightforward, guitar-fueled anthems. The pummeling opening track, "Follow You Home," features a no-frills Southern-rock vibe bolstered ...
| | Nasar Abadey Mirage CD (2000)
Ritual music CDs
$14.69 Talented Washington-based drummer Nasar Abadey has built a solid reputation as a sideman with several groups, particularly those led by trumpeter Malachi Thompson. Mirage documents a collection of recordings from the 1990s from the drummer's band, Supernova, which in the early part of the decade featured the late tenor saxophonist Carter Jefferson. Not surprisingly, Jefferson provides some of the best playing on the album, with his contribution to the live, powerful version of John Coltrane's "Ascension" probably the highlight. Mirage is somewhat of a mixed bag, though, with a few convincing tracks combined with several weaker ones that are a bit of a throwback to the laid-back, fusion-laced, modal '70s. The closing "Chakra Cocktail" uses synthesizers for a spacy feel that creates some unusual sounds when mixed with Abadey's percussive effects: Star Wars greets the 21st century. Supernova includes some fine, lesser-known performers comfortable in a straight-ahead format. Guitarist Gerry Eastman, for example, consistently displays attractive chops as a linear bop-derived improviser, and bassist Joe King impresses with his solid soloing. Joe Ford's catchy composition, "Izit," has a sharp bite and memorable melody. While the band lacks some focus due to the diversity of styles, they maintain a consistently high level of professionalism and quality. ~ Steven Loewy
Abadey is drummer, composer & bandleader on his Amosaya debut, backed up by his working band Supernova - the music here captures the group's telepathic sharing of musicspace & their unique combination of ...
| | Ruts Crack/Grin And Bear It CD (2003)
Ritual songs
$8.49 The import-only EMI release The Crack/Grin and Bear It includes the Ruts' resonant 1979 album The Crack in its entirety as well as Grin and Bear It, which Virgin released at the time as an odds 'n' sods affair. The latter album includes the band's last single with vocalist Malcolm Owen, "West One (Shine on Me)," and six additional studio tracks as well as live versions of "S.U.S.," "Babylon's Burning," and "Society." The Ruts are often overshadowed by their peers in the Clash and the Sex Pistols. This is due in part to their dissolution in the wake of Owen's untimely death from heroin abuse. But like Gang of Four -- another group that has lived on as a considerable influence despite limited output/life -- the Ruts' visceral patchwork of punk fury, reggae, and dub rhythms and Owen's own distinctive vocal style would influence a host of later groups, from Fugazi to the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and mark the group as one of the most important forces to rise out of British punk's second wave. Anthems like "In a Rut," "Something That I Said," and "H-Eyes" still kick with electricity 20-plus years on, while earthy reggae workouts like ...
