Ritual album
$15.44 Motley Crue may have been the glam metal kings of the '80s. But, for a while at least, Twisted Sister gave them heated competition. While the Crue and their L.A. cohorts (Ratt, Dokken, etc.) were dead-serious in their approach, Twisted Sister's music and videos always contained an element of humor-something most bands of the era sorely lacked. 1984's STAY HUNGRY was Twisted Sister's double-platinum breakthrough, its popularity spurred by the imaginative (and hilarious) videos for the hits "We're Not Gonna Take It" and "I Wanna Rock."
The Long Island-based Twisted Sister built a solid following, gigging constantly since the early '70s and riding on the strength of such albums as UNDER THE BLADE and YOU CAN'T STOP ROCK N' ROLL. All of which set the band up for STAY HUNGRY. Singer Dee Snider proved to quite an intimidating figure, bedecked in garish make-up and transvestite gear, and his outspoken personality carried Twisted Sister's songs and stage-show. STAY HUNGRY proved to be the band's finest hour, containing such tracks as "Burn In Hell," "The Price," "S.M.F.," "Horror-Teria," and "Stay Hungry" itself. ...

| | Vault: Def Leppard Greatest Hits CD (1995)
Ritual music CDs
$10.39 Includes liner notes by Peter Mensch, Joe Elliott, Phil Collen and Rick Savage.
When Def Leppard arrived on American shores with 1980's ON THROUGH THE NIGHT, they were lumped with a New Wave of British Heavy Metal that also counted Iron Maiden part of the movement. Yet even then, the Sheffield quintet's inescapable pop sense separated them from their heavier brethren. As the '80's progressed, Def Lep soldiered on through tragedy, lengthy multi-year stays in the studio and quite a few world tours. VAULT culls the hits from the millions of albums they sold by way of MTV ("Photograph"), soundtracks ("Two Steps Behind"), and obvious sexual innuendo ("Pour Some Sugar On Me").
Influenced by the glam postures of Mott The Hoople, Bowie, T. Rex and Slade, Def Lep transformed their love of these artists into a sound shaped by Joe Elliott's raspy vocals, the synergy fueled by Phil Collen (who replaced Pete Willis in '83) and the late Steve Clark's guitars, and Rick Allen's punchy backbeat (seemingly unaffected by his loss of an arm in '85). Heavy guitars, sweet hooks and a rare ability to balance a harder-edged side ("Foolin'") with earnest power ballads ("Bringin' On The Heartbreak") show why Def Lep continue to soldier on long after pop-metal's '80s heyday, and they make VAULT a safe worth cracking.
Additional personnel includes: Robert John "Mutt" Lange, Stevie Vann (background vocals).
Producers: Robert John "Mutt" Lange, Mike Shipley, Def Leppard, Pete Woodroffe.

| | Saxon Into The Labyrinth CD (2009)
Ritual songs
$13.89 One of the last fervent flag-wavers of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Saxon unleashes its 18th studio release. One of the most dynamic and epic albums of the band's career, INTO THE LABYRINTH combines the Deep Purple-meets-AC/DC barroom rock with progressive, near-Teutonic metal anthems. The elements that truly make the album special are Biff Byford's laid-back, swaggering vocal style and Charlie Bauerfeind's (Blind Guardian, Helloween, Gamma Ray) ...
| | Anthrax State Of Euphoria CD (1988)
Ritual album
$8.59 1988's STATE OF EUPHORIA became Anthrax's first gold-certified full-length album shortly after its release, as the band was introduced to a wide new audience by opening up a stateside tour for Ozzy Osbourne. But although the band picked up new fans, many of Anthrax's old guard felt that this sixth overall release pushed the band in a less-than-savory commercial direction. Though not as strong as 1986's AMONG THE LIVING, STATE OF EUPHORIA still proved to be a much-needed alternative to much of the soft glam metal being proliferated by MTV and pop radio at the time.
In keeping with the band's past couple of releases, Scott Ian's lyrics are quite thought-provoking and imaginative. "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" addresses the ripping of older bands by startup metal outfits; "Make Me Laugh" is about two-faced televangelists; and "Now It's Dark" goes inside the mind of the deranged character Frank Booth from the movie BLUE VELVET. The album's best-known song however, is the anthemic cover of Trust's "Antisocial," which spawned a popular MTV video. But Anthrax showed that it retained its lighthearted side with the final two songs, "13" and "Finale."

| | Hollywood Undead Swan Songs CD (2008)
Ritual CD music
$8.65 Hollywood Undead specializes in an L.A.-flavored high-tech rap metal. If this was 2001 or so, they'd just be another face in the crowd, but the relative dearth of this once-popular fusion genre now makes their funked-up headbanging sound quite original. "Black Dahlia" pushes chugga-chugga guitars to the background as atmospheric synths take center stage as a sung chorus competes with the thuggish raps, and "This Love, This Hate" could almost be a gritty Duran Duran with its glossy new wave backing.
