Ritual album
$21.94 When Anthrax released AMONG THE LIVING in 1987, the band was a part of a then-burgeoning heavy metal sub-genre called speed or thrash metal. This was an inversion of glam metal. The band members wore worn-out jeans and T-shirts, their long hair was hairspray-free, and not a smudge of make-up was applied to their unsightly mugs. Their music was dense, borrowing speed from punk and hardcore and mammoth guitar riffing from metal, and featured thought-provoking lyrics. AMONG THE LIVING not only served as Anthrax's commercial breakthrough, but (along with seminal releases by Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer) the album brought this new musical form to the forefront.
The members of Anthrax were a bunch of comic-book-reading, jam-wearing heavy metal fans from NYC, and the music reflects the lifestyle. The band based it's U.K. Top-30 hit single "I Am the Law" on a favorite comic-book character (Judge Dread). "Imitation Of Life," a song about phony people that contains one of thrash ...

Ritual album
$15.05 The American version of THE SILENT FORCE features two bonus tracks ("Destroyed" and "Jane Doe") not available on the European edition.
Available in the U.S. for the first time in 2008, Dutch symphonic rock heroes Within Temptation's 2004 epic, THE SILENT FORCE, continued the band's incomparable blend of classical, New Age, opera, and heavy metal music. In addition, the latter-day prog rockers' fourth studio release topped the charts all over Europe and scored two major singles ("Stand My Ground" and "Memories").
"The Silent Force" is an exhilarating listen - a monument of opulent melodies, sweeping orchestral elements and tremendous power. ...
| | Pelican What We All Come To Need CD (2009)
Ritual CD music
$11.49 One had to wonder what Pelican's signing to Southern Lord could possibly mean. To be truthful, while the band did write and perform more structurally formal material on 2007's CITY OF ECHOES, they retained their trademark post-metal aesthetic -- percussive repetition, overtone basslines, and nuanced guitar riffing. On WHAT WE ALL COME TO NEED, they have taken it not a step further, but a step more inside that aesthetic. The concentration here is on songwriting rather than riffing. There is a decidedly more melodic bent here than on any of the band's previous releases, ...
| | Nasar Abadey Mirage CD (2000)
Ritual music CDs
$14.69 Talented Washington-based drummer Nasar Abadey has built a solid reputation as a sideman with several groups, particularly those led by trumpeter Malachi Thompson. Mirage documents a collection of recordings from the 1990s from the drummer's band, Supernova, which in the early part of the decade featured the late tenor saxophonist Carter Jefferson. Not surprisingly, Jefferson provides some of the best playing on the album, with his contribution to the live, powerful version of John Coltrane's "Ascension" probably the highlight. Mirage is somewhat of a mixed bag, though, with a few convincing tracks combined with several weaker ones that are a bit of a throwback to the laid-back, fusion-laced, modal '70s. The closing "Chakra Cocktail" uses synthesizers for a spacy feel that creates some unusual sounds when mixed with Abadey's percussive effects: Star Wars greets the 21st century. Supernova includes some fine, lesser-known performers comfortable in a straight-ahead format. Guitarist Gerry Eastman, for example, consistently displays attractive chops as a linear bop-derived improviser, and bassist Joe King impresses with his solid soloing. Joe Ford's catchy composition, "Izit," has a sharp bite and memorable melody. While the band lacks some focus due to the diversity of styles, they maintain a consistently high level of professionalism and quality. ~ Steven Loewy

| | Ruts Crack/Grin & Bear It CD (2003) (Import) United Kingdom
Ritual songs
$9.09 The import-only EMI release The Crack/Grin and Bear It includes the Ruts' resonant 1979 album The Crack in its entirety as well as Grin and Bear It, which Virgin released at the time as an odds 'n' sods affair. The latter album includes the band's last single with vocalist Malcolm Owen, "West One (Shine on Me)," and six additional studio tracks as well as live versions of "S.U.S.," "Babylon's Burning," and "Society." The Ruts are often overshadowed by their peers in the Clash and the Sex Pistols. This is due in part to their dissolution in the wake of Owen's untimely death from heroin abuse. But like Gang of Four -- another group that has lived on as a considerable influence despite limited output/life -- the Ruts' visceral patchwork of punk fury, reggae, and dub rhythms and Owen's own distinctive vocal style would influence a host of later groups, from Fugazi to the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and mark the group as one of the most important forces to rise out of British punk's second wave. Anthems like "In a Rut," "Something That ...
