The "Buy Out" riddim by Tony Kelly was one of the hottest of 2001 in Jamaica, powering tracks by acts as diverse as Beenie Man, T.O.K., Spragga Benz & Twice, and Sadeki. To be fair, it's a good rhythm, although hardly original, based around three chords, but its simplicity is what makes it so versatile. It lets the plain pop of "Drive Me Crazy" from Mr. Easy, which seems more influenced by American Top 40 than anything out of Jamaica, sit well with the hyper dancehall of Beenie Man's "Miss L.A.P." Elan remade a couple of classics, putting both Neil Diamond's "Red Red Wine" and Bob Marley's "Put It On" over the riddim to good effect, while T.O.K. unleash the weekend anthem "Money to Burn," which illustrates their close-harmony abilities. More than anything else, Buy Out shows the range of modern music from the loudest island in the world -- and there was far more going on there in 2001 than many realized. Dancehall was the dominant culture, thanks to stars like Beenie Man and Spragga Benz, but pop, harmony, and roots reggae survived. However, a disc like this also points out the limitations of the music; that there's a dangerous lack of originality, as riddims get recycled in many different forms -- although that's been the case for many years and the music hasn't died. ~ Chris Nickson

As the original boundary-breaker between British folk and electronica, Beth Orton brought coffee and sunshine down to the still-awake-at-seven-A.M. crowd with her guest shot on early William Orbit and Chemical Brothers albums, warming things up with her honeyed vocals. The rest is the history, as collected on this two-disc set of hits, guest appearances, b-sides, remixes, singles, and rarities. Disc One picks the gems off Orton's first three albums, including "She Cries Your Name" and the comforting title track (guest vocal by Terry Callier).
The second disc, however, gets deep and diverse, with two tracks from a rare, Japanese-only release called SUPERPINKYMANDY (the weepy "Where Do You Go" could be at home on an Enya or Cowboy Junkies disc). A dance remix of "Central Reservation" rocks out in spirited style, while "Pedestal" warrants Orton's frequent Sandy Denny comparisons with its sublime folksy grace. German-born but based in Toronto, Adi Braun is less a jazz singer in the traditional sense than part of the current crop of eclectic pop singers who use cabaret as a starting point. Less dramatic than Rufus Wainwright, less poppy than Nellie McKay or Sylvie Lewis, less twee than Erin Bode, Braun has the skillful phrasing of a jazz chanteuse in the Peggy Lee mold and a flair for interpretation that occasionally suggests Lotte Lenya. The closing rendition of Edith Piaf's "Hymne a l'Amour" is pure 1930s Europe in its world-weary sophistication, and Braun puckishly changes lyrics in standards like "Honeysuckle Rose" to hint at more earthly delights than Tin Pan Alley songsmiths usually allowed themselves to discuss. But for the most part, Braun and her small combo (piano, bass, drums, and occasional tenor saxophone) stick to simple jazz-based arrangements that put all of the focus on Braun's lovely, softly accented voice. Those few songs that move furthest away from the style tend to be weakest: at the album's nadir, Perry White's sleazy 1970s tenor solos on the tepidly soft-rocking "About Last Night" will bring fern-bar flashbacks and unpleasant memories of that unfortunate period when Joni Mitchell thought she was a jazz singer. Overall, however, The Rules of the Game focuses on solid material, mostly from the pens of young Canadian jazz and pop songwriters instead of the usual over-familiar ...
