| | Judas Priest Concert Classics CD (2009) Reissue
Collections CD music
$11.18 There was a time when British Steel was the hottest, hardest, and most awesome substance on the planet. On Judas Priest "Concert Classics", here it is, in its most appropriate circumstances: live, on stage. Judas Priest re-invented heavy metal. The first band to use the twin-guitar attack, they built on the foundation Black Sabbath had laid and moved metal to a new level. Looking back on the body of the work that the classic Priest line-up of Rob Halford, Glenn ...
| | Rod Stewart Soulbook CD (2009)
Collections music CDs
$13.79 Continuing his stroll through pop's backpages, Rod Stewart moves on from "The Great Rock Classics of Our Time" and dives into the SOULBOOK, shorthand for all the great Motown and soul songs that still are in heavy rotation on oldies radio well into the new millennium. Rod doesn't spend much time with the soul and blues singers so influential on him, choosing instead to run through a bunch of Motown hits - a full six of the 13 songs here are from the Motor ...

$15.65 Porcupine Tree, have found a way to incorporate both prog rock's '70s, with its 10-minute-plus suites and bombast, and its more refined, rock heavy '80s, into their 2009 effort, THE INCIDENT. Set up similarly to Rush's 1978 classic, HEMISPHERES, ...
| | Timothy B Schmit Expando CD (2009)
Collections album
$11.99 Timothy B Schmit launched his solo career late - in 1984, after the Eagles disbanded and right in the thick of the era of shiny, synthesized production. Schmit released three solo albums, all big and glossy, between 1984 and 1991, then reunited with the Eagles in '94, so he never quite had a chance to record an album as relaxed and natural as 2009's EXPANDO. Ditching all the sheen, but not professional ...
| | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
Collections CD music
$14.39 Shakira's brand new English album She Wolf is an uptempo pop album. It is all about synthesizers and electronic concepts, all mixed with the world sounds that we are used to from Shakira.. sounds from countries like India, the Middle East and her home country of Colombia. She Wolf features a predominantly English track list with a follow up album of new and unique repertoire in Spanish to come in 2010. The title track "She-Wolf " boasts the infectious and energizing sound that made Shakira a household name, with a slightly more dancey/ electronic beat (about 125 beats per minute). Though most tracks on the upcoming album will be in English, Shakira chose to service the Spanish version of the first single, "Loba", two weeks before the English single is launched.
Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy," she sings on the title track with no small trace ...
| | Bennie Maupin Driving While Black CD (1998)
Collections music CDs
$10.55 Driving While Black... is Bennie Maupin's first album as a leader in 20 years. Maupin, who is famous for his bass clarinet playing on Miles Davis' Bitches Brew and for being a member of Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, teamed up with Patrick Gleeson, who introduced Hancock to synthesizers and worked on the Apocalypse Now soundtrack (1979). They have produced an album which skillfully blends '70s fusion and '90s acid jazz: Gleeson's funky hip-hop beats sound fresh and up to date, while his usage of analog synths (listen to the beautiful Fender Rhodes sound) breathes '70s air. Maupin's saxophone playing is powerful and strong on improvisation; this is particularly nice to hear since Maupin's '90s record appearances have been, for the most part, surprisingly weak. The Whitfield/Strong-penned "Smiling Faces" is the catchiest track; originals include the funky "Bank Float," "Vutu," and "The Work," which veers into drum'n'bass territory. The best track, however, is "Miles to Go," where Maupin shows that he's still one of the best bass clarinet players around; his screaming and squealing through Gleeson's synth washes is probably his best performance (on record) in years. Another nice surprise is on "In re: Nude Orbit," where the famous Random Resonator which opened Hancock's Sextant (1973), on which Gleeson worked, can be heard. While both ...

Mobile Fidelity reissued two of the Searchers' best albums, It's the Searchers and Take Me for What I'm Worth, on one CD. Although these are among the Searchers' best records, they are still uneven albums, which means casual fans will be better served by hits collections. Besides, this ...
