After the success of Moontan, Golden Earring could have easily parlayed its success into international stardom by continuing to play up that album's commercial elements. Instead, the group did an about-face, pursuing uncommercial song themes and pushing the prog rock side of its sound to the fore (this move included the addition of Dutch prog rock keyboardist Robert Jan Stips, formerly of Supersister, to the lineup). The band even lampooned the sexy cover art of its recent hit album with a similar cover that replaced the gorgeous showgirl on Moontan with a marionette. The result is an album that lacks the consistent sound and coherence of Moontan, but makes up for it with an adventurous spirit and plenty of instrumental firepower. Highlights include "Love Is a Rodeo," a tune that starts as a thrilling guitar rocker before taking a sudden left turn into a finger-snapping instrumental coda dominated by synthesizer, and "Kill Me (Ce Soir)," a mystical epic that starts with a pulsating bassline and builds to a thunderous, orchestrated climax as its lyrics present a surprisingly incisive portrait of how society inevitably destroys its idols. A downside is that, by encompassing so many different styles, the songs lack the logical flow that would allow Switch to feel like a full, cohesive album. Another problem is that the lyrics have a bitter and defensive tinge (especially on "The Switch," a hard-edged explanation of the group's artistic rationale) that sometimes sits at odds with the exciting quality of the music. Despite these problems, Switch remains a solid album that Golden Earring's fan base will enjoy; the disc might also appeal to adventurous fans of prog and hard rock. ~ Donald A. Guarisco

4 stars Somewhat dated but not dull
If all the Golden Earring you've heard is Moontan, Switch will really please your ears! Well crafted songs, played by experts, with a really outstanding singer fronting it all. Sure some of the synth stylings betray it's age, but overall this is a great album. The remastering was well worth the effort: everything is clean & dynamic with a truly excellent drum sound.

4 stars Underdog Album
This music on this album is flashy, and even brilliant at times, with a certain idigenous Earring flair for syncopation. The problem is that it seems to fall on deaf ears. Every song on the album is unique. Even though "Switch" was really just a bunch of good songs that show them flexing their sound,it was sort of presented as a concept album, thinly veiled, and this album was just ignored. But I think it's a really good point in the bands history, and I know that some of the music on "Switch" gives premonitions of "To The Hilt" which is a fine moment for Golden Earring, so this one gets extra credit with me.

3 stars Not my thing
To be honest, I never listen to this one. It sucks for the most part, just like Contraband. I've always been more into their 80's-present stuff. If you have to have 70's Golden Earring, go for Moontan and Together, not Switch or (Ugh!), Contraband. I suggest you pick up Last Blast Of The Century, Bloody Buccaneers, Cut, NEWS, Prisoner Of The Night, Moontan, Together, Face It, The Hole, Something Heavy Going Down, The Naked Truth, Naked III, and Millbrook USA.

Bryan Adams So Far So Good CD  (1993)

SO FAR SO GOOD (AND MORE) includes 9 previously unreleased videos. By 1993, when Bryan Adams released his first collection of greatest hits, he had enjoyed 12 years in the music business during a span that had seen hot trends like new wave and late '80s hair metal fall by the wayside. Adams managed to stay popular by sticking with an ear-pleasing brand of rock & roll that veered between edgy, bar-band style riff rock to more earnest, American-style roots rock in the tradition of Bruce Springsteen and Bob Seger. SO FAR SO GOOD gathers all the essential Adams tracks from his hugely popular '80s albums. This set of melodic rockers, inlcuding "Run to You," "This Time" "Kids Wanna Rock," and "Summer of '69" will be familiar to anyone who was near an FM radio during the era. Adams is a likeable rebel, a tough and tender troubadour singing songs ...

The 18-track COLLECTION focuses on the 1970s work by the Miracles folloing Smokey Robinson's departure for a solo career, including the disco smash "Love Machine." While a deeper dip into the Miracles' first release (Renaissance) wouldn't have hurt, The Essential Collection is still a fine overview of their post-Smokey Robinson recordings on Motown with Billy Griffin. England Dan Nights Are Forever CD  (1976)

CD $9.69  5 stars Top 500
Nights Are Forever was the breakthrough album for Dan Seals and John Coley after some sincere and excellent work on A&M Records in the early '70s. Two of their biggest hits were the title track and the beautiful "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight." Those songs are a good indication of the fine performances this 1976 album contains. The duo's originals like "Long Way Home" and the Dan Fogelberg-ish "Westward Wind" could have been hits as well displaying superb musicianship and delicate vocals. This album is very much a companion piece to the Parker McGee album recorded around the same time, on the same label, with pretty much the same musicians. Producer Kyle Lehning has the sounds so similar a survey panel would probably not be able to figure out which song came from which album. What Nights Are Forever has that the Parker McGee album does not is "There'll Never Be Another For Me," a song co-written by Parker McGee, England Dan, and John Ford Coley -- it is a rare look at what a perfect synergy these musicians have, and it is an exceptional song. You can feel how cautious and serious the two singers are here. By the time Dowdy Ferry Road was released in 1977 they were settling in to a formula, and 1979's Dr. Heckle and Mr. Jive has low points that feel like ...

If Dowdy Ferry Road was their bleak moment in song, Some Things Don't Come Easy is the calm before the storm, a port prior to the schizophrenia that was Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive. Wandering songs like "Who's Lonely Now" are indicative of this album, and it is only one of two titles the singers pen together. They look alike on the smiling, happy airbrushed front cover, but you can almost see sadness in their eyes on the photos on the back. It must have been an intense period as they came up with yet another Top Ten hit, their fifth of six. "We'll Never Have to Say Goodbye Again" was written by Jeffrie Comanor and is far and away the best song on the album. This duo knew how to interpret; they were fantastic at it. The hit single is defined, the production is compact, and the loose ends that make up all the other songs on Some Things Don't Come Easy pale in comparison. The song's hook and instrumentation are so radio-friendly that the 45 could be put on repeat and after the 30th spin not bore like many of the tracks here. Sure, there is more outside material. Dave Loggins' "Lovin' Somebody on a Rainy Night," as well as Bob Gundry and Jeff Comanor's "Beyond the Tears," are adequate, but they really needed material beyond their genre, and needed it desperately at this point in time. Adequate just doesn't cut it when you are in the middle of a string of hit singles. Gundry co-wrote "Hold Me" and "Calling for You Again" with John Ford Coley, ...

Manny Oquendo Ahora CD  (1999)

CD $12.35  Top 500 Audio Samples
Although Ahora was recorded in 1993, Milestone/Fantasy didn't release this excellent CD until 1999. While Manny Oquendo & Libre's other '90s releases, Mejor que Nunca and On the Move, contain both salsa and Latin jazz, Ahora offers no instrumentals and no outright Latin jazz. However, it does unite Libre with some guest jazz musicians (including trombonist Steve Turre and vibist Joe Locke) and isn't without jazz elements. For this album, Oquendo wrote three songs: "Concierto de Oquendo" (an exuberant, 11-minute descarga or Latin jam), the exuberant "El Son" and the anti-drug commentary, "Drogas Fatal." Equally strong are the songs that Oquendo didn't write, which include "Asia Minor" (a tribute to the great Machito/Mario Bauza team) and Pedro Flores' gorgeous bolero, "Sabor a Mi." A bilingual gem, "Sabor a Mi" finds Libre pianist, Willie Rodriguez, handling the English lyrics while Libre's main singer, Herman Olivera provides the Spanish ...
