Anita O'Day's many and varying recordings during the swing era (pre-1951) get compiled in many different ways by many different budget labels, few of them worth the plastic they're burned onto. ASV/Living Era is quite an exception to the usual rules governing import labels, so it's less of a surprise to find that their Anita O'Day retrospective, And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine, is one of the best available. It's one of the few to include all of her '40s work in several different contexts -- with the bands of Gene Krupa ("Let Me off Uptown") or Stan Kenton ("And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine," "Are You Livin' Old Man?"), as well as in solo format ("Hi Ho Trailus Boot Whip"). The only drawbacks here are the obvious lack of her Verve recordings (that afflicts nearly every O'Day compilation ever released) and ASV/Living Era's very slight sound-quality issues. ~ John Bush
