| | Mr Lif Live At The Middle East CD Mr Lif Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Personnel includes: Mr. Lif, Akrobatik, Akbar, Insight, Fakts One, DJ Sense. Recorded live at The Middle East, Boston, Massachusetts. Live at the Middle East is possibly the most unusual hip-hop album ever released. The idea of an artist essentially subjecting a paying audience to previously unreleased material (some of which is being improvised live onstage) is considered esoteric, the province of jazz and jam bands. By hip-hop standards, it's unheard of. Mr. Lif, however, is not your typical hip-hop artist, which renders Live at the Middle East a fascinating experiment. Not only is Lif a skilled MC and articulate lyricist, he has a quirky, original sense of humor, so in addition to one entire track dedicated to how Lif beat his DJ at Nintendo, there's also a spontaneous three-song cycle dramatizing an MC who starts off as an underground rapper, scores a major-label deal, and realizes he can never write a meaningful rhyme again. In addition to unveiling some material he recorded but did not release (such as the witty work-sucks diatribe "Live From the Plantation"), Lif invites his DJ Akbar and fellow rapper Akrobatic in an extended freestyle session, including a clever rhyme improvised when the record skips. Whether rapping about nuclear war in "Earthcrusher" or reminiscing about his past hairstyles in "Dreafro," Lif is simply one of the smartest, most original rappers around, and the range of his humor and skills makes Live at the Middle East a superb release to please any fan of smart, well-crafted hip-hop. ~ Victor W. Live At The Middle East
$8.75 The reissue was produced by Bob Porter. Personnel: Donny Hathaway (piano, electric piano). Unfortunately, Atlantic's A Donny Hathaway Collection, one of the few career retrospectives available (and basically the only one in print), isn't quite definitive; it presents a version of Hathaway's career inordinately focused on his commercially successful duets with Roberta Flack, and his slowest, most dirge-like solo ...

| | Buck 65 Vertex CD (2000) (Import) Canada
Live At The Middle East
$18.79 Reissue of this album, originally released in 1999. Buck 65 is really Richard Terfry (aka Stinkin' Rich) from Novia Scotia. Vertex was hailed by critics as a progressive, brilliantly conceived concept album, a regulated mix of measured neuroses & marble-mouthed charm. Metaforensics. 2002.
Personnel: Buck 65 (sound effects). In spite of sounding like it was recorded in some poorly lit cellar, Vertex is rife with bright flashes of Buck 65's subdued brilliance. Although the overall aesthetic of the record is of a decidedly D.I.Y. flavor (with 65 handling everything from the decks to production duties), it never feels anything less than wholly authentic. Chalk that up to 65's ...
| | Cameo Definitive Collection CD (2006) Remastered
Live At The Middle East
$11.99 Cameo: Charlie Singleton (vocals, various instruments); Nathan Leftenant (vocals, trumpet); Larry Blackmon (vocals, bass guitar, drums, percussion); Tomi Jenkins (vocals). Though it took a while for Cameo to break in the U.S. (they'd had two hit U.K. singles before their first American hit, "Word Up"), their sound was to become synonymous with 1980s R&B. This collection of hits and album tracks collects '80s dance classics like "Single Life" and "She's Strange," all featuring the group's sonic signature of Larry Blackmon's idiosyncratic vocals, synthetic drums, and a popping bass line. The influence of Parliament/Funkadelic is obvious in cuts like "Rigor Mortis" and "Talkin' Out the Side of Your Neck," while "Candy" and "Back & Forth" are the kind of sunny pop/R&B that was unfortunately all but extinct by the '90s. Any single-disc Cameo compilation is going to come up short. There's no way around it. The group's charting singles cannot be contained on two CDs, and ...
