| | Amf Bach: Violin Concertos CD (2009)
Poulenc: Gloria In G Major, Organ Concerto, Etc.
$9.99 Young German violin virtuoso Julia Fischer, who was named Artist of the Year in 2007 by Gramophone Magazine, has been lauded for her immaculate technique and thoughtful interpretations. Having recorded the solo sonatas and partitas of Johann Sebastian Bach in 2005, Fischer now turns her attention to the violin concertos of her compatriot in her debut album for the Decca label. While she performs the works in a modern idiom, Fischer is mindful of aspects of early music performance practice. She employs brisk tempos and minimal vibrato, and leads the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields herself, joining in with the orchestra in tutti sections in a truly collaborative spirit.

| | Bach: The Trio Sonatas / Joan Lippincott CD (2002)
Poulenc: Gloria In G Major, Organ Concerto, Etc.
$13.75 Bach's six Organ Trio Sonatas were created as solo instrumental imitation of Italian chamber music. Thus composed for three equal and independent voices, they are extremely difficult works for the organist who must employ one hand on each manual and both feet in equal skill. Developing also from the Italian Sonata, Bach utilized the fast-slow-fast three-movement format, effectively turning the organ from an obbligato instrument into a solo concert one for the first time. They have remained a staple of the organ repertoire ever since.
Organist Joan Lippincott shows why with her impressive display of pedal and keyboard virtuosity. Also clear is her understanding of the basic and inherent polyphony that is the staple of these pieces. Relying upon subtle differences in timbre, she awakens and highlights each part with distinctiveness and color. Her mechanics are impeccable, and rhythmic precision is never sacrificed even in the faster pedal parts. When heard carefully, one understands the heights to which Bach took the organ as an expressive instrument.
