One of Rabih Abou-Khalil's earlier albums, Between Dusk and Dawn features stellar sidemen such as master percussionist Glen Velez and jazz saxophonist Charlie Mariano. In places it exhibits that ecstatic melding of jazz and Arabic music that was later perfected on Blue Camel. But in other places it gives us long patches of noodling and less-then-engaging playfulness. An example of the former would be the first track, "Dusk." At just over 14 minutes, more than half of this piece is devoted to a shapeless and tiresome prelude for percussion and oud (Arabic lute). An example of the latter is the aptly named "The Thing That Came Out of the Swamp," which features everything but the kitchen sink, including Glen Velez's overtone singing, in a fantasy that sounds like Stravinsky crossed with Steve Reich. Yet there are solid, jazzy tracks like "Chess with Mal" which opens with a long but well-formed solo by Charlie Mariano before sax and oud synchronize for one of Abou-Khalil's gloriously rhythmic tunes. Or "Dawn," where Abou-Khalil plays one of his favorite tricks of making it sound as if the melody of the piece grows out of his initial improvisation. Despite the album's lack of overall focus, it does offer a bounty for the ear, especially in the percussion. A disc for fans of one or more of the musicians involved. ~ Kurt Keefner

The David Rees-Williams Trio was formed in 1988 and features David Rees-Williams (piano), Neil Francis (bass guitar) and Phil Laslett (drums). Based in Canterbury, they have performed in an interesting variety of concerts and festivals over the years both in England and Spain, and now specialise in a programme that unites the best of classical and jazz. David's arrangement of Purcell's "When I am laid in earth" from their CD "Classically Minded" was first played on Radio 3 during the summer of 2001 on Sean Rafferty's programme In Tune. Rafferty described the response as 'extraordinary' and it resulted in the BBC being inundated with enquiries, they were subsequently invited to record a commercial disc on theBBC's new Late Junction label. "Hidden Colours" was released during the second half of May 2002 and features arrangements of Purcell, Bach, Grieg, Faure, Franck, Debussy and Ravel. It received excellent reviews in the Times and the Independent on Sunday and shortly after its release, was Editor's Choice in HMV Choice Magazine. It was then to become No.2 of HMV's 10 best Classical discs of 2002. It was also rated best of its genre by the Financial Times in its end of year disc review on world music of 2002. In September 2004 their album "Time Scape" was released. Featuring arrangements of works by Ravel, Bach, Chopin, Stanford, Purcell, Buxtehude, Elgar, Warlock and Bossi. CD REVIEWThe Undesirables' Summer's Gone Review Penguin Eggs The Undesirables are the Georgetown, Ontario, duo Sean Cotton on guitar and harmony singing and vocalist/lyricist Corin Raymond. Their debut disc is produced by the talented Trevor Mills and mixed and mastered by his father, Canadian folk legend Paul Mills. It seems appropriate their first outing is shaped by the hands and hearts with that kind of tradition behind them, as the duo's music is in the very traditional singer/songwriter mold. It can be best described as folk blues and has the kind of simplicity that's deceptively tough to achieve. Cotton's guitar is concentrated and evocative. Their singing blends together nicely and is as convincing in that form as two white boys are going to get. Mills, to his credit, doesn't try to thicken their sound with backing instruments but showcases them raw, just as it would sound live, but with perfect balance. It is a nice debut and it'll be interesting to see where they take it from here.-Barry HammondTHE UNDESIRABLES At this very moment, The Undesirables are probably down at The Rogue Studios in their hometown of Toronto, Ontario, delivering the vocals for their new album, Traveling Show. They may well be singing on the duet they wrote with Dala, their favourite other Toronto duo, with whom they've been teaming up. It's just as likely they're planning their third tour of Australia with David Ross Macdonald, another co-conspirator, who, incidentally, will be opening for the duo at Hugh's Room when they officially launch their latest effort (Traveling Show) on Friday, October 9th, 2009. Traveling Show is the duo's third album to date, and they're already planning to record their fourth, Cancer Shoes, in Australia in April 2010, with producer Mick Wordley (The Yearlings, Chris Whitely, Jeff Lang). If they're not planning their September '09 tour of B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, they're probably working on those songs right now. Corin Raymond is folk's only front man. He's a storyteller whose audiences make themselves cozy in the palm of his hand, and as a singer he sweats for his payload like any worker in soul. When he's not sweating for The Undesirables, Corin is singing his own songs, behind a rhythm guitar, with his band The Sundowners. He released his newest solo effort, There Will Always Be A Small Time, in May, 2009. One of Corin's songs will be published in the July issue of Sing ...
