This Ninja Tune label zany throws all sorts of stuff against the wall to see what sticks--the funny thing is that most of it does. Downtempo beats have never sounded so warm and fuzzy. Funki Porcini blends the best elements of Henry Mancini, Esquivel, Hank Mobley, Miles Davis, Ennio Morricone, Herb Alpert and lounge records too obscure to mention into a buttery waffle of space age bachelor pad music.
"Groover" can't decide what it wants to be when it grows up--Friday evening jazz funk or warmed-over drum 'n' bass--but sampled trumpet blasts, police siren atmospherics and spitting rhythms offer minutes of excitement nonetheless. Then there's "Venus," a sample fest of brass and vibes culled from Tangerine Dream, the Tijuana Brass, and Bobby Hutcherson, swaggering sleazily in a mud bath of marimbas, portly bass, and drunken bop reverie. Imagine a Fender Rhodes and a drum machine colliding with a tray of martinis, and you'll get a glimpse into the oeuvre of Funki Porcini.
