The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, it was impossible to walk down the hall of any college dorm in America without hearing one of the songs here echoing from somebody's room.
Heard today, the thing still packs a wallop. Butterfield's harmonica and vocals are utterly idiomatic, without a hint of minstrelsy. Michael Bloomfield's lead guitar is stinging and eloquent, and the rhythm section, on loan from Howling Wolf, swings like mad. This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also a lovely rendition of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" that's topped only by Ron Wood's reappearance on a finale of the Stones' "Ruby Tuesday." A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Though he probably achieved his greatest mainstream recognition backing up Lou Reed on tour, idiosyncratic songbird Antony is a fully established artiste in his own right. Backed by the Johnsons, as on I AM A BIRD NOW, he crafts delicate ballads that skirt the lines between cabaret, artsong, and pop, with the kind of voice that Stephin Merritt would probably kill for. Antony's unique pipes bring to mind an androgynous Bryan Ferry or a high, quavery summit meeting between Jimmy Scott (another Reed supporter) and Aaron Neville. How much is too much of a good thing? Depends where you stand on the thing to begin with. Such is the case with Stereolab. Detractors who were never moved by the group's sound to begin with will lament the fact that little new ground is broken on SOUND-DUST, especially after hints at new directions were dropped on 1999's COBRA PHASES album. It's true that this Gallic/British/American collective sticks to their usual blend of bubbling analog synthesizers, interlocking marimba and vibraphone ostinatos, odd-metered, cyclical rhythms, and Brigitte Bardot-with-a-Master's-Degree vocals.
However, anyone who's attracted to the band's still-distinctive (despite leagues of imitators), retro-futuristic electro-lounge sound will be pleased that the group stood it's ground, dispensing large dollops of frothy joy on their first official long-player of the 21st century they've spent so much time foreshadowing. Besides, in the long view, the horn charts and sophisticated arrangements do show marked evolution from the group's Velvet Underground-reverent beginnings. To borrow the title of another British band's album, "enjoy the melodic sunshine."
