this 26 track compilation is the first CD totally dedicated to dance band leader Cummins & His Orchestra, who never achieved the fame of his contemporaries, but nonetheless created a considerable amount of high quality output for the family-owned Gennett
Contains 26 tracks. Personnel: Bernie Cummins (vocals, kazoo, drums); Paul Roberts (vocals, trumpet); Belle Mann (vocals); Jack King (alto, clarinet, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone); Wally Smith (alto, clarinet, alto saxophone); Paul Miller (violin); Ambrose Barringer, Ernie Mathias (trumpet); William Diehl (tuba, double bass); Archie Miller (piano). Liner Note Author: Mark Berresford. Recording information: 01/28/1924-11/04/1930. Directors: Gene King; Bernie Cummins. Drummer Bernie Cummins led one of the top dance bands of the '20s and early '30s, although he is quite obscure today. Some of his best recordings are from the early '30s but this CD -- which is mostly from 1924-1927 (17 of the 26 selections with the remainder from 1930) -- shows that he had an impressive orchestra during an earlier period too. No big names emerged from Cummins' band, but the ensembles are quite musical, the arrangements swing well for the period, and the musicianship is impressive. Cummins' orchestra performed a wide variety of material but this CD concentrates on his more jazz-oriented recordings, including such numbers as "When," "St. Louis Blues," "Words," "Poplar Street Blues," and "Hand Me Down My Walking Cane." Hopefully, Bernie Cummins' slightly later recordings will also be reissued eventually. Recommended for 1920s jazz collectors. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Dan Smith Tales Of Abercrombie 3 Back To Kindergarten CD (2007)
1924-30
$15.15 The 'Tale' of Tales of AbercrombieFun, catchy, and amusing songs are the trademark of Tales of Abercrombie. You'll hear songs either crafted as extended tales of beloved nursery rhymes or created from the minds of the children in all of us. Tales of Abercrombie CD's emerge from the children's perspective and cover a broad range of topics important to children. Nursery rhymes are the foundation for fun, but other topics include dinosaurs, favorite foods, playtime, tub time, love, rules of the household and other issues associated with growing up. The lyrics are fresh and amusing, and the tunes are catchy. Many songs will have the children up and dancing or acting out parts of the story. Three CD's and 50 songs later, Tales of Abercrombie is known to many as a collection of songs that are great for the kids, but also good fun for mom and dad too!Dan Smith incorporates music into his Kindergarten teaching in the Fairfield, Connecticut school system. He finds that his students are great fans, the harshest of critics, and provide an endless stream of new material! Knowing the power of humor in delivering his lessons, Dan lets the children in on the jokes, creating amusing and fun songs. Dan's natural storytelling ability raises you up and moves you to shake your body or tap your toes. Dan's strengths are his song writing, his guitar playing and his ability to hear a song in his head before it is even written! Dan also happens to be the father of the greatest six-year-old boy ...
