BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. Austin band What Made Milwaukee Famous (yes, like the Jerry Lee Lewis song) had already made a nice name for themselves by the time Barsuk Records decided to sign them and re-release their 2004 debut, and it's clear from the first notes of Trying to Never Catch Up that this is a band that knows what they're doing, and is pretty damn sure about it, too. It's especially the eight songs carried over from the original release that really showcase the group's strengths and utter likeability. The four new tracks added here, while not bad ("Judas," in particular, is great, staying in the lower registers and offering abstract advice like "please direct your questions that direction with regards to disregard"), are lacking a bit of the subtlety and poeticism that is so inherent in the older pieces. "Sweet Lady," for example, although interesting musically, has pretty run-of-the-mill lyrics, the only time on the album that really happens. Because normally, WMMF singer Michael Kingcaid has an easy way with words, making disparate sentences seamless, switching from an electronically-induced growl to a sweet falsetto in the same measure, his tenor telling tales of broken relationships with absolute sincerity and without making himself seem weak or embittered. "Hellodrama" is an upbeat, summery pop song with keyboards, a new wave disposition, and Costello-esque lyrics: fun yet serious at the same time ("When you show up it's like a landmine close enough to leave indelible scars adhered to one such ...

The carefully named Original Artists Hits of the 50's delivers what it promises, offering three discs of '50s hits by the artists who made them famous. However, "original artists" doesn't necessarily mean original recordings, and this collection only features about two or three of those per disc. Some of the original recordings include the Del-Vikings' "Come Go with Me," Frankie Avalon's "Venus," Johnny & the Hurricanes' "Red River Rock," and Phil Phillips' "Sea of Love," all of which still sound good. Nevertheless, with just a handful of genuine articles out of 30 tracks, Original Artists Hits of the 50's is a waste of time and money. ~ Heather Phares
